Final Day to Sell Your Hametz April 7
During Pesah, the Torah prohibits both the eating and ownership of hametz. Therefore, we arrange for mekhirat hametz, the sale of hametz (which includes both food and utensils) to a non-Jew. This sale can be accomplished by appointing a shaliah (agent) to make the transfer. This is a legal and valid sale. At the end of Pesah, the shaliah arranges to reverse the sale and transfer the hametz (which is now permitted) back to the original owner.
To appoint Rabbi Rubenstein to sell your hametz, visit www.cbahm.org/event/sellhametz2020 to register.
Siyyum BekhorimWednesday, April 8 at 8:00 a.m.The Fast of the Firstborn (Ta’anit Bekhorim) reminds us the firstborn of Egypt were slain during the tenth plague while the Israelite firstborn were spared. In recognition, all firstborn should fast on Erev Pesah. This responsibility is nullified when a firstborn has a festive meal following the completion of study of a Jewish text.
Join Rabbi Rubenstein as he finishes his study. To join on your computer/smart device, visit https://zoom.us/j/748166634. To join by phone, call 929-205-6099, meeting ID 748166634.
Yizkor & Memorial PrayersSunday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m.As an in-person Yizkor service is not possible this Passover, you are invited to join Rabbi Rubenstein and Ronn Nadis for live streaming of Yizkor.
It will be broadcast on the Beth Ahm Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CongregationBethAhm/ To join by phone, call 929-205-6099, meeting ID 976209395. Yizkor prayers and other readings are available for viewing and download on the Beth Ahm website at www.cbahm.org/event/yizkor412 or you can call the synagogue office at 248-851-6880.
Unfortunately, the congregation’s first night seder and the community buffet have been canceled due to coronavirus precautions. But, there is good news.
Kosher for Passover carry-out is available. Whether you need complete meals, a few sides, or just desserts, Dish Kosher Cuisine will be providing take-out for seder and throughout the holiday. Contact the catering office at 248-539-8825 for moreinformation and to place your order.

In past bulletin articles, I shared with you what I believe to be reasons to get involved in daily minyan. They included:
· Ensuring mourners can say Kaddish· Feeling a sense of community· Knowing that you are continuing a sense of tradition· Having an opportunity to meet new people· If you attend in the morning, there is camaraderie during breakfast
One very important reason not included above is the opportunity for learning. Each morning before reciting Kaddish D’Rabanan, Rabbi Rubenstein provides a brief teaching. In addition, during evening minyan, a member will deliver a D’var Torah.
Below, are excerpts of a D’var Torah delivered by Jerome Seid on MLK Day that resonates with me.
This is a remarkable day and week. One in which we begin to read about what many of us consider to be the defining Jewish experience; the yoke of slavery, debasement and disenfranchisement of the Jews, their redemption by the Mercy of God and deliverance to freedom and Eretz Yisrael.
It may be coincidental, or perhaps not, if one is a spiritual, sentient person, that this week’s parasha Vayera falls during the week in which we also celebrate the birth of a man who lived and died as the embodiment of a modern Moshe for his own people who suffered and continue to suffer many of the same hardships as the Jews. And, so frequently in his sermons and speeches he alluded to themes and ideas taken directly from our Jewish texts. Here are some examples:
Psalms: Be still before Adonai: Wait patiently til he comes. Do not be upset by those whose way succeeds because of their wicked plans.
MLK: “We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.”
Pirkei Avot: Hatred of fellow creatures puts a person out of the world.
Vayikra: Do not hate your fellow in your heart.
MLK: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
To read Jerome’s full Dvar and teaching’s by other congregants, visit www.cbahm.org/summerseries
To get involved in minyan, please contact me. Remember, it’s not how often one comes to minyan, but that one makes the commitment.

Shabbat TimesIsrael Book ClubTuesday, June 30beginning at 7:30 p.m.Everyone is invited to join Rabbi Rubenstein for a discussion on the book The Best Place on Earth: Stories by Ayelet Tsabarai.
Confident, original and humane, these stories are peopled with characters at the crossroads of nationalities, religions and communities: expatriates, travelers, immigrants and locals. The Best Place on Earth illuminates the tenuous connections - forged, frayed and occasionally destroyed - between cultures, between generations and across the gulf of transformation and loss.
Advanced registration to Rabbi Rubenstein at [email protected] is appreciated.
Last month, thirty Beth Ahm “Boomers” participated in a retreat at the Butzel Conference Center. The weather was great “for February” and the food was good “for camp”. The overall experience, however, was AWESOME and highlights some of the best elements of our congregational community. There were a variety of people; some old friends, some acquaintances, some who had never met. But the atmosphere was warm, friendly, and comfortable for all. There aren’t too many “drama-free” zones in the world these days, but this wasexactly that. There was serious praying and
learning available to those who wanted to engage. And there were the beautiful woods of Camp Tamarack for those whose spirit is moved more by the outdoors. There was creative programming that pushed everyone just a bit out of their comfort zone, but managed to be fun and meaningful at the same time. We shared personal songs and stories, learned a song complete with instruments and harmony, and struggled as a group through several clever “initiatives”. There was lots of conversation at meals during which participants were encouraged to sit with different people each time – and actually did!We had a lively discussion about a provocative short story that the Rabbi shared and played a competitive game of trivia. We were a microcosm of Beth Ahm; a community that prays, learns, plays and supports one another; a community that enables us to both escape and engage the realities and pressures of the outside world. We recognize that a weekend retreat is not for everyone. So whether you choose to join in daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, we strive to create the opportunity for all of our members to experience the best of its elements as part of our regular synagogue programming throughout the year. And consider this an official invitation to check out Boomer Camp or Family Camp 2021!
Our 2020 Baby Boomer Retreat is in the books.
Great people, great fun, super hike, lots of singing, a wonderful opportunity to deepen friendships and create new ones, and unbelievable weather
(at least for February in Michigan :)
So much to share - ask one of the people in the picture to tell you more.
And put the next retreat on your calendar:

Beth Ahm, as described by its Hebrew translation (People’s House), is a home for Jews at all stages of life. To emphasize the congregation’s
welcoming and inclusive culture, a new restroom was recently constructed.
Located by the weekday entrance, this single-user restroom provides privacy. It is ADA accessible and has a baby changing station.
A staff member or greeter can show you its location.
We hope all of our members and guests will find benefit from this new restroom. As our tradition teaches,
“For my house shall be a house of prayer for all people.” (Isaiah 56:5)

Message from the Rabbi
Rabbi Steven Rubenstein248-851-6880 ext. [email protected]
I am writing this article from my home on March 20. It is difficult to tell what will be on my mind when you receive your bulletin—not to mention what will be on your mind. There is so much that I want to say to you; so much to share about what we are going through as a world, as a nation, and as a local community. I want to share a few thoughts about how to manage in the coming weeks.
Physical Distancing and Maintaining ConnectionI’ve spent quite a bit of time talking with people on the phone this week. Many of you are doing well - you have what you need; people are checking in with you and you are checking in with them. Everyone suffers from the same uncertainty as to how the coming weeks will unfold. And some are already feeling the effects of ‘social distancing’ and are feeling isolated.
I also know that the interactions that we are having—by phone, by computer, through online events - are making a difference in people’s lives. We should remember that although the term we are using is ‘social distancing’, what is called for is ‘physical distancing’; it is precisely at a time like this that we can (and should) be ramping up our social interaction in all the ways we can safely do this. Now is the time for social interaction
but from a distance. Now is the time to call people, send emails, use Facetime and even write letters.
PesahPesah is such an important time of year for us and we look forward to and plan our Seders with great anticipation. Many of you have already changed your plans for Seder so that you will be with a very small number of people at your table. That is as it should be this year. Please don’t make an exception to your physical distancing for Seder. We shouldn’t be saying that we’ll make an exception for Seder and choose to gather with a group for those nights. Better to have small Seders and be healthy.
Our Seders will be different. Please take advantage of online resources and the comments/ideas/pictures in your Haggadot to make these Seders special. One of the challenges that many people report year after year is finding ways to engage the many different people who come to the Seder table. Ironically, this year’s small Seders allow us to tailor them to the smaller group, to engage in conversation in ways that we may not be able to carry off when there are 20 people at the table. While I can’t pretend that there isn’t sadness at not having our full families at the Seder table, we should do the best we can this year and look forward to the next time you will have everyone together.
For Those Who Need Additional Help NowWe know that the pandemic is reshaping our lives right now. I also know that some within our congregation will have financial setbacks and will need assistance. Please know that Beth Ahm (and other Jewish institutions in Metro Detroit) stand ready to assist. And it should be a comfort to us all that several people have already contacted me to offer assistance to those who may need it. If you need help of any kind, please contact me directly at [email protected] or 248-851-6880.
In the meantime, I encourage you to stay connected to Beth Ahm and your Jewish life generally. We are striving to offer a variety of programming online. Our tradition of daily prayer is both a traditional obligation and a tremendous opportunity - perhaps now more than ever. If you have questions about how to create your own davening at home or need resources, again, please contact me. You will also find a special prayer written for this moment by Rabbi Martin Cohen. You may choose to recite it daily or occasionally.
A Prayer in the Time of PlagueRabbi Martin S. Cohen
Avinu Malkeinu, Dear God in Heaven, protect our families, our friends, and our neighbors as we negotiate these troubled seas in which we find ourselves afloat. Ever mindful of the fact that we are all Your creatures, we turn to You
for guidance and for strength as we pray that the public officials charged with bringing us through this crisis be granted wisdom, intelligence, and insight born of compassion and charity. And we pray too that the physicians, nurses, and hospital employees who are on the front lines be spared all distress and disease as they care for the stricken, for the
elderly, and for the infirm. Most of all, we pray that You look with kindness and generosity on us all, and particularly on those already infected for whose recovery we this day ardently pray, as is written in Your holy Torah,
“For I, the Almighty, am the source of Your healing.” Amen, may such be Your will!
