Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….
“Honored, Celebrated, and Inspired” In the spirit of Yom Kippur I must confess: as I write this article I am well aware it is sever-al days overdue. Things have been so hectic here with feverish last minute prep for our 150th celebration, not to say anything of the looming High Holidays. Hopefully our overworked office staff will forgive me for indulging them and holding up the whole process. They maintain a strict deadline schedule in order to expedite timely delivery to you, our dear congregants. There is so much dated matter you need to be informed about for the many upcoming holidays, services and related programming. So I apologize profusely if this bulletin arrives a few days late. But to tell you the truth, I’m actually glad I’m late, because it has afforded me the opportunity, (an opportunity I dare not otherwise miss), to report about the historical and inspiring events of this past weekend, September 16 – 18, 2016, the inauguration of a year’s celebration of our 150th anniversary. This weekend will doubtless go down in the annuls of CBI’s storied history as one of the most memorable ever! Those of you who were lucky and blessed to be here know what I am talking about. Those who missed it can add that loss to any end of the Jewish year regret you might hold. As I write this article on Monday morning September 19th right after the weekend, with the vibe and aftermath still in the air, there is feverish activity going on in our building. Maintenance is busy cleaning from top to bottom from the hundreds of happy people who streamed through our doors for each event. And as I peer out the window of my office door, I am incredulous - I can’t believe my eyes – I see the 3 incomparable and oh so diligent co-chairs of our 150th – Cathy, Fagie and Sharon already meeting in the Rabbi’s office they requisitioned years ago, busy analyzing, and, rather than resting on their laurels, planning the next events like Simchat Torah on Sunday night October 23rd and the Cantors concert musical extravaganza on Saturday night December 3rd, as well as a whole year of events with their committees of over 100 volunteers. Would our founders be proud! Could they have imagined? Friday night began with perfect weather for the outside reception. We davened Mincha outside on the lawn followed by a spirited, lively service in an overflowing sanctuary. The new 20 member devoted and talented Ruach Chorus with several soloists debuted and filled the shul with appropriate spirit for welcoming the 150th Shabbat of CBI. Could this be an ongoing project? In his drash Rabbi Jason Miller, who will officiate our High Holiday services for the third year, related the Torah portion Ki Tetze to our 150th celebration. At the packed dinner, guest of honor Rabbi Daniel Stein of Walnut Creek, Ca, son of Sharon and Sanford, and born and bred at CBI, payed tribute to those at CBI who helped shape his Rabbinical career. At shabbat services honorees included our past presidents, daily minyan, seniors, Klay Kodesh, Chevre Kadisha, USY, and the late Dr. Philip Horowitz who lovingly read Torah for decades. Descendants of the 150 CBI members listed at the cornerstone of our Bancroft building in 1913, presented extracts of the 100th anniversary cantata written by Doris Goldberg z”l, wife of Rabbi Morton Goldberg z”l who served CBI for over 50 years. A highlight of the davening included “dueling Cantors” as the Torah was returned to the ark with David Friedes, who served as Hazzan at CBI from 1987-99. In his sermon Rabbi Michael Ungar of Columbus, OH (who served CBI from 1997-2002) reminisced about his ‘good old days’ at CBI. Rabbi Alan Sokobin deftly rounded out the Torah service through his always scholarly elucida-tion of the haftorah. A magnificent Megillah of CBI’s history by our own extraordinary artist Gabi Mallin was present-ed, and is already displayed in our showcase. At seudah shlisheet – the third shabbat meal, Rabbis Stein and Ungar discussed the Jewish concept of giving kavod – honor. Shabbat ended with Havdallah on our patio, the weather once again cooperating after a heavy downpour during the morning service. That downpour actually added a touch of humor, as rain penetrated the ceiling above the Rabbis’ heads, forcing them to relocate off the bimah. At Saturday night’s Reunion party we were entertained by amongst many others the so talented Meira Zucker, Paul Causman, Tom Helberg, Debbie Katz Liebenthal, and Anne Bauer, with tasty treats by Jeff Sherman and decora-tions by Jeannette Bernstein, and kitchen staff who scurried around all weekend to keep us well-satiated. Lannie Katzman also deserves great kudos for devoting so much energy to photo and video documenting our history. On Sunday we took a bus tour to Eagle Point and Beth Shalom Cemeteries to pay our respects to pioneers who founded and served CBI with particular distinction, from our earliest president Solomon Van Noorden to Rabbis Goldberg and Pearlmutter and Cantor Ulman. The tour concluded with a visit to the magnificent 1000 seat Bancroft Street Shul, our second of four buildings, where we were most graciously received by our hosts Bishop Daniel Day, his choir and Apostolic congregation who now occupy our former historic structure. Some of our group recalled wonderful childhood memories from growing up there. We drove past the Kenwood Shul before returning to our newest 10 year old building as a fitting conclusion to an exhilarating weekend of celebration. (continued on page 3)

Some Surprising Renditions of the Kol Nidre Prayer
For many of us, one of the most poignant moments of the year is at the start of Yom Kippur as the Hazzan be-gins chanting the Kol Nidre prayer. There is something about the melody that reaches out to our souls from times past, and from distant lands. I decided to see if there was a version I might try to play on my trombone, possibly based on the famous cello solo set done by Max Bruch in 1880. This led me down a curious path on the internet, where a search for Kol Nidre resulted in hundreds of audio and video recordings, including renditions by many cantors, as well as popular and classi-cal singers. There are many cello, violin and other instrumental performances, plus lectures and sermons. Of course, there are clips from the movie, “The Jazz Singer”, with Al Jolson (1927) and Neil Diamond (1980), but did you know there was a 1952 version starring Toledo’s own Danny Thomas? Any number of singers have recorded it, including Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, and opera stars such as Jan Peerce. But it does not stop there. There is the English ver-sion of 1968 by a group called the Electric Prunes. Other instruments on which the melody is played include the lyre, accordion, saxophone, and just about anything else you can imagine, even a theramin. Plus, there is a 1939 Yiddish language movie entitled “Kol Nidre”. As you might imagine, many of the vocal and instrumental renditions are beautiful. Of the really good ones, not all were equally moving. Though I greatly enjoyed many of the instrumental recordings, I had to admit that it is the human voice that has the advantage over even the most wonderful instrumental renditions. I think the reason for this is that when we hear the melody, we put it into the context of being in synagogue on that most important night. For me, the most meaningful recordings are those of Hazzanim. These are the ones that can touch your soul. Some-how, the true beauty of the music is revealed by a singer who has a true understanding of the meaning of Yom Kippur. Musical training alone will not suffice. If you ask me which is my favorite, it will take place very soon, on Yom Kippur. Ann and I look forward to standing with you as the Torahs are taken from the ark, our own wonderful Hazzan begins, and the Kol Nidre touches our souls. May you be inscribed in the book of life for a good year.

Notes from the Cantor (continued from page 2) The High Holidays are known as Y’mei Zikaron – the time of remembrance. We came this past weekend ‘to honor, to celebrate and to inspire’ as is the slogan of the 150th celebration. On these High Holidays let us remember and honor our past and give thanks for the opportunities those who came before us have presented so that we could enjoy being here. David S. Stone Religious School The school year is well under way. We are off to a great start with many exciting activities this month. Our fall holidays are upon us and we wish all of you a Happy and Healthy New Year! A joint program with all Jewish students in our community is quickly approaching on October 9. A special visit from a lone soldier is planned for all of our 6 th-10th graders is planned with our guests coming in from Cleveland. The program is at Congregation B’nai Israel following a special joint taschlich program beginning at 9:30. All students and families will meet at the lake behind CBI at 9:30 with a special tashlich service led by Cantor Lichterman and Rabbi Rubin. We are looking forward to our first parent and child class on October 9 from 10:00-11:30 taught by Megan VanDyke. This class is for ages 3 and under and we would love to see you there! Each class has a Jewish holiday or value theme, that will include, stories, music, art activities, learning centers and more. Please email Kim at [email protected] if you are planning to attend. Our USYers are helping out with the JFS High Holiday Food drive. Please bring all donations to CBI by October 14. Our Religious school students will help take over to JFS the food and organize with students from Shomer Emunim on the morning of October 16. We will not have class in the morning on October 23. Instead all students will be attending the special Simchat Torah celebration beginning at 5:30 in the evening. This is an extraordinary intergenerational event for all of us to participate in, it will include a complimentary dinner for the kids, service, torah unrolling and ice-cream bar. October 30th is the Sisterhood Opening program, featuring all of the students who were able to participate on a trip of a lifetime to Israel this past June. 2016-2017 Torah Fund Campaign
P’RI YADEHAH, which means “the fruit of her hands,” is a phrase from Eishet Chayil in the Book of Proverbs (31:31).
To commemorate the 100th year of Women’s League for Conservative Judiasm and the 75th year of the Torah fund Campaign, we celebrate women’s achievements through creativity– the fruit of her hands– in the family, workplace, home, synagogue, and community. Women dedicate their lives as volunteers, as leaders in the Jewish and secular worlds, as scholars, scientists, artists, business leaders, and more. The wheat branch featured in the 2017 pin/pendant signifies the sus-tenance we wish our family and friends, and the olive branch represents our prayers for peace.
