“FAITH TO MOVE MOUNTAINS” UPDATE AS OF 9/10/2015

As of our last tally we are 82% of goal. We need to reach goal so that our parish will receive 30% of all monies collected. We will receive this money twice a year, and it will be used to repave our parking lot, fund a Faith Formation program for our youth and adults and go toward a Capitol improvement Fund for repairs and improvements to our Buildings and grounds.

We have received a few one-time contributions toward this campaign and are very grateful for them. Please consider a pledge or gift so that we can reach this goal. We need $77,655 to reach goal. It’s not impossible. “Epiphany is people”, and we have always rallied to the call. Please prayerfully consider this request and help us go over the top. Thank you for your consideration.

***Our Current Budget*** This week our collection totaled $5,854.00 This is short of what we need to fund our budget. Please try to increase your weekly offering. We had 243 parishioners use envelopes last Sunday. Our Annual Appeal 2015 Our Goal is $48,000. We have received Pledges totaling $30,935 We have received payments of $27,983.00 This is 64% of goal. We are a tax-exempt non-profit Organization and gratefully accept donations from last will and testament’s and/or stock to assist in carrying out our mission. For more information, please contact Michele at Wells Fargo Advisors (800-533-6163) May God Bless you for your generosity.

“COMMEMORATIVE BRICK CAMPAIGN” Consider purchasing an Epiphany Commemorative Brick for any upcoming Graduation, Wedding or other special family celebration, or a memorable acknowledgement for your loved one. The cost is $150 for a 4x8 inch brick and $200 for an 8x8 inch brick. There are plenty of spaces left. Please consider purchasing one. Thank you. Day of Healing for Separated and Divorced Catholics

Diocese of Trenton, Dept of Pastoral Care invites ALL Separated and Divorced Catholics to a Day of Healing for Separated and Divorced Catholics. Saturday, October 17 @ 9AM – 4PM at the Church of St. Ann Parish Center, 1253 Lawrenceville Rd., Lawrenceville. Led by: Marianne Skrobiak, M.S., M.A., LPC Nationally renowned author of “Return to Life” (a divorce recovery series). Online registration: www.dioceseoftrenton.org Registration forms can be found on the table in the commons area. Cost is $10 per person.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Is it permissible to offer assistance in dying? "To bring about death directly is always against the commandment 'You shall not kill' (Ex 20:13). In contrast, to stand by and assist a dying person is humane and even obligatory. What really matters is whether a dying person is killed or allowed to die. Someone who kills a dying person (euthanasia) breaks the Fifth Commandment. Someone who helps another person in the dying process obeys the commandment 'Love your neighbor.' In view of the certain impending death of a patient, it is legitimate to withhold extraordinary or expensive medical procedures that are not proportionate to the expected outcome. The patient himself must make the decision to forgo 'extraordinary' measures or must have stated this intention in an advance directive. If he is no longer capable of doing so, those who are legally entitled must represent the express or probable wishes of the dying person. Ordinary care of a dying person should never be discontinued; this is commanded by love of neighbor and mercy. Meanwhile it can be legitimate and in keeping with human dignity to use painkillers, even at the risk of shortening the patient's life. The crucial thing is that the use of such medications must not aim at bringing about death, either as an end in itself or as a means of ending pain". From: Catechism in a Year (Day 237)

Gospel: Mark 8:27-35

Jesus taught his disciples that as the Messiah, he had to suffer much, be put to death, and rise three days later. Peter began to disagree and Jesus reprimanded him for judging by human standards rather than by God’s. He told them that whoever would be willing to lose their life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, will in fact preserve their life forever.

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them ‘Go in peace, keep warm and eat well.’ But you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself if it does not have works, is dead.”

A prophet, some say is one who comforts the distressed and distresses the comfortable. St. James’ letter should do just that. We can grill ourselves with questions of how I have wasted food just this week, how I have outgrown clothes in my closet, how I have criticized the poor for being poor, without knowing the real cause.

Some say ‘I am a Catholic, I was baptized.’ Wonderful, but do I practice the faith,

attending mass, receiving the sacraments, serving the needs of others? They are the things that Catholics do. I am a Catholic, but do I pay my employees a just wage, provide adequate heat to those who rent from me, do I send a meal to a home where someone is ill or grieving? That is what practicing Catholics do.

Saint James’ letter reminds us of the Archbishop in Brazil, who stated: ‘When I give bread to the poor, they praise me. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist.’ Pope Francis asks us, when we give a coin to a beggar, do we look him or her in the face? Do we fear touching them as we place the coin in their hand?’ Is Christ to be found in giver and receiver?

Faith is real when accompanied by good works. Otherwise it is dead!

Are You Being Called to Become a Permanent Deacon? If you are discerning God’s call to serve the Church in the Diocese of Trenton as a Permanent Deacon, a man or ordained to the ministry of Charity, Word, and Sacrament, you are invited to take part in an upcoming information session. The presentation will include information concerning the role of a deacon, the discernment process, and the five-year Diaconate Formation Program. Before registering to attend this session, please schedule a meeting with your pastor to discuss the call to the diaconate, Sessions are scheduled for Sept. 29 & October 6, 7-9PM at the Diocesan Chancery, 701 Lawrenceville Rd., Lawrenceville, NJ. Pre-registration is Required. Please register with Deacon Michael Riley, Associate Director of Clergy and Consecrated Life 609-403-7134
