The Crystal Eagle Award is presented annually to a member of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) whose contributions have positively affected the health care facility management profession and made a difference to the Society. Often referred to as “ASHE’s lifetime achievement award,” this award recognizes those who have been instrumental in the creation and optimization of healing environments.

Michael Kuechenmeister, FASHE, CHFM, CHC

The 2015 Crystal Eagle Award goes to Michael Kuechenmeister, FASHE, CHFM, CHC, and Director of Plant Operations of West Chester Hospital.

Kuechenmeister began his career in health care engineering in 1979 as the Manager of Project Engineering for Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. He quickly advanced to higher managerial roles and went on to oversee the construction, engineering, and maintenance for two hospitals, 31 medical office buildings, and utility purchasing for seven Health Alliance hospitals.

Outside of his work in hospitals, Mike has been a member of the Tri State Society for Healthcare Engineering (TSHE) since 1987 and has acted as an ASHE advocacy liaison for the group to this day. His undeniable passion for health care safety, energy efficiency, and advocacy has driven him to make positive changes in the field throughout his career. Kuechenmeister was a leader of ASHE’s original energy efficiency commitment program (now named Energy to Care), volunteered for several task forces, spoke regularly at the ASHE Annual Conference, and even became a nationally recognized leader in helping several southern hospitals stay open during Hurricane Katrina.

Kuechenmeister’s passion for the field and tireless pursuit to provide for and be a resource to other health care professionals has made ASHE proud to call him the 2015 Crystal Eagle Award Winner.

President’s Award

The President’s Award is presented at the discretion of the sitting ASHE president to an individual who has made significant contributions to the health care facility management profession and has gone above and beyond the call of duty in support of the Society.

David Dagenais, BS, CHSP, CHFM, FASHE, the 2015 ASHE President, has selected Walt Vernon, PE, FASHE as this year’s President’s Award Recipient. Walt is the CEO of Mazzetti, a national consulting and engineering firm headquartered in San Francisco. Walt has degrees in philosophy, mathematics, electrical engineering, business, and law and is a certified professional engineer in 40 states with a license to practice law in California. With a passion for sustainability and energy conservation, Walt and his team at Mazzetti have done great work on the Energy to Care and Sustainability Roadmap programs. Beyond these programs, he has served as a volunteer representing ASHE members on many code issues including waterborne pathogens (ASHRAE 188), sustainability (ASHRAE 189.3), the isolated power debate, and has served as the NFPA 99 electrical section.

In recent years, Walt has discovered a great passion for upgrading and rebuilding health care facilities in the developing world, much of which has been pro bono work. Today, he remains active on committees that have a large impact on the codes and

standards affecting the design of health care facilities. For these reasons, David Dagenais, along with the rest of the team at ASHE, are happy to announce Walt Vernon as the 2015 President’s Award Recipient.

Emerging Regional LeadersThe Emerging Regional Leader Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellent leadership qualities and made significant contributions within their local chapter and to the field of health care engineering and facility management; planning, design, and construction; safety; clinical and biomedical engineering; and technical management.
