Math and Language Placement Assessments

• ALEKS Mathematical Skills Assessment: If you think you may enroll in a math, science, social science or business course your first semester, you need to take the ALEKS placement assess-ment to determine in which level of math class you should start. It may also be a requirement to enroll in some math courses.

Complete the Online Experience

ISSS will register you in a Desire2Learn (D2L) Pre-Arrival Online Course. You will also be enrolled in a New Student Welcome Experience course in D2L and must complete that in order to register for classes. These courses contain information about what you need to know and do prior to starting at CU-Boulder and must be completed before arriving on campus.

#1

Prepare for your arrival to campus

You may arrive in the U.S. up to 30 days before the re-port date on your DS-2019 or I-20. Check all CU-Boul-der mandatory orientation dates before making your travel plans. You must arrive on campus and complete the 2.5 day required in-person Undergraduate Interna-tional Orientation. If you do not, you will be removed from classes that you have registered for over the sum-mer.

You will also need to arrange transportation to the campus and any temporary housing accommodations. Transportation to campus is not provided by the univer-sity. More information is available on the ISSS website and in the Pre-Arrival Online Course. However please note, you must arrive by the date listed on your 1-20 or DS-2109 since it is related to your orientation require-ment.

#4

Submit your final transcripts

Arrange to have your final official transcript(s) and grad-uation certificate (if applicable) sent by the school or ap-propriate official to the Office of Admissions as soon as they are available or bring them to the Office of Admis-sions (Regent Administrative Center, RM 125) upon ar-rival. Official transcripts may also be emailed to [email protected] from your school. Transcripts emailed from a student will not be accepted.

#5

• Language Placement Tests: If you did not meet the necessary foreign language requirements in high school (varies by major) or plan to continue studying a foreign language other than English, you must take a language placement test to help you determine the appropriate level of a language class in which you should enroll.

If you are coming from an international school, we will need to review course descriptions of all college level work completed to determine applicability toward degree requirements. Official transcripts must be in English and come directly from the issuing institu-tion. They can be submitted by email to [email protected]. Please include your full name on all documentation. Once the evaulation is complete, you will receive an email with details about what to do next.

Select or waive health insurance

All students and their dependents are required to have health insurance to cover the cost of medical treatment. You may choose one of the plans made available by the university, or may waive the university insurance and choose a plan of your own. Regardless, you will have to show proof of insurance coverage. Please keep in mind that CU-Boulder’s insurance coverage starts on a specific date. If you are arriving in the U.S. earlier than that date, you should buy additional travel insurance to cover the time before the CU-Boulder plan starts.

CU-Boulder, and I really like the business

Make sure that your passport is validImmediately

Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the date you enter the U.S. If it is not, renew it immediately to avoid delays in the visa process.

#1

Receive your I-20/DS-2019Shortly after you confirm your intent to enroll

Most international students attend CU-Boulder on an F-1 student visa. In order to obtain an F-1 visa, you will need a Form I-20 issued by our school. If you are not already in the U.S. on an F-1 visa or will not be attending CU-Boulder on an F-1 Visa, your I-20 will be issued soon after you confirm your intent to enroll. You’ll receive an email to the address listed on your application asking you to verify your mailing address.

If you are already in the U.S. on an F-1 visa, you will need to transfer that visa record to us after the end of studies at your current program. We will email you instructions for transferring your visa record to us; we will also contact you with delivery options for your I-20 when that record has been transferred.

If you did not indicate a visa type on your application, we will assume you will be an F-1 student. If you indi-cated a visa type other than F-1 or J-1 on your appli-cation, we assume you will be attending CU-Boulder on that visa, and we will not be issuing a visa docu-ment to you. It is your responsibility to ensure you can attend CU-Boulder on your current visa type; if you would like to switch to an F-1 visa please contact us immediately at [email protected].

#2

Apply for your visaImmediately after you pay your SEVIS fee

Each visa applicant must first complete an online DS-160 form, pay the fee and bring a confirmation page to his/her interview. You must also upload a photo while completing the DS-160. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the photo requirements.

All applicants for an F-1 or J-1 visa must provide:

• A signed I-20 or DS-2019 form, filled out completely and accurately

• Valid passport• Proof you have been admitted to the University

of Colorado Boulder (offer email or letter from the university)

• Proof of SEVIS fee payment (I-901 receipt)• Transcripts of your previous schooling, diplomas• Required test scores (TOEFL/IELTS, SAT, GRE,

GMAT)• Anything that provides evidence of your intent to

return home after your studies in the U.S.• Any other information and processing fees required

by the Department of State (varies by embassy)

#5

Make an appointment with the U.S. embassy/consulateAfter you receive your I-20 or DS-2019

Make an appointment to apply for a visa at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate as soon as you receive your I-20 or DS-2019. It is important to apply early, because the visa issuing process may take several weeks or lon-ger. Review detailed information in the links below:

• F-1 visa information• J-1 visa information

Please note that students applying for J-1 exchange visitor visas are not applying for the J-1 trainee or intern categories. Therefore, you may disregard the Form DS-7002 from the checklist of required documents.

#4

Pay the SEVIS feeImmediately after you receive your I-20 or DS-2019

New J-1 and F-1 visa holders must pay the SEVIS fee to the Department of Homeland Security before an F-1 or J-1 visa can be issued. Canadian citizens also need to pay the SEVIS fee before they can enter the U.S. colorado.edu/oie/sevis-fee.

Attend the mandatory International Undergraduate Orientation

Orientation is mandatory for all new international un-dergraduate students. During orientation you will learn essential information about being a CU-Boulder stu- dent, what resources are available to you and connect with other incoming students. Failure to attend this orientation will result in you being removed from all classes that you have selected during registration over the summer.

colorado.edu/orientation/international-students

Complete immunization records

Colorado state law requires all degree-seeking stu-dents born after January 1, 1957, to provide doc-umentation for two rubeola (measles), two rubella (German measles) and two mumps immunizations. Hepatitis B and meningitis immunizations are strongly recommended but not required. If possible, we rec-ommend getting these immunizations in your home country to save you time and money upon arrival. Be sure to keep the records of your immunizations. Submit immunization records to Wardenburg Health Center before the deadline for your first semester at CU-Boulder.

HousingOn-Campus Housing

Residence HallsAll incoming first-year students are required to live in the on-campus residence halls their first two se-mesters. Transfer students may also live in the residence halls if space is available. Residence halls have male and female residents; however, most halls have single-gender floors. Most rooms are shared with one other student, and roommates are always of the same gender.

Along with traditional residence halls, CU-Boulder also offers 20 Residential Academic Programs (RAP) and Living & Learning Communities (LLC) for students with shared interests.

In addition to living on campus, students are also required to have a meal plan their first year. CU-Boul-der’s dining program is one of the best in the nation, offering a variety of daily menu options that can accommodate almost anyone, including those with food allergies as well as Kosher and Halal diets.

Bear Creek ApartmentsTransfer students and students beyond their first year can live in these furnished, university-owned apart-ments. They are located near campus and provide a safe and welcoming community for all residents.

Family HousingFor students with families, there are several university-owned apartments to choose from.

Off-Campus HousingNumerous off-campus apartments and houses are available in and around Boulder to transfer students and students beyond their freshman year. The CU-Boulder Off-Campus Housing & Neighborhood Rela-tions office maintains listings of rooms, houses and apartments for rent in the Boulder community.
