From the Pastor’s Desk
ALLELUIA Blessings and joy on this Fifth Sunday of Easter. Today, at the 10:30am Mass, we welcome the Most Rev. John R. Manz to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to twenty-five of our parishioners (listed on bulletin cover). An Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Bishop Manz is the Episcopal Vicar for the region that includes St Hugh Parish.
Congratulations to our Confirmandi. Congratulations also to their parents, sponsors, god-parents, relatives, and fellow parishioners. Our thanks to all who have prepared them for this special religious occasion, especially their catechists.
As a liturgical season, Easter is a fifty day paschal festival that includes the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord on Sunday May 13 (which is also Mother’s Day) and culminates with the celebration of the Solemnity of Pentecost, the so-called Birthday of the Church, on May 20.
Beginning this year, the Monday after Pentecost will annually be celebrated as the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. The Gospel reading at the Mass will be John 19:25-34. See page five of this bulletin for additional information.
During this Eastertide, consider how you might more fully participate in the church’s liturgy and the ministry
and mission of our parish. A parish Help Wanted / Volunteers Needed is featured at the bottom of page six of our weekly bulletin.
Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish.
Father Reszel
Living in Shame? In the reading from St. John's first letter, he talks about our hearts condemning us. (1 John 3:20) He is referring to the shame we feel when we do something sinful. When he says God is greater than our hearts he means that even when we know we have sinned, even if we feel unworthy to be forgiven, God is still a forgiving God, who doesn't wait for us to be "worthy." He patiently waits for us to ask for his mercy, to want his forgiveness. So when we confess our sins, we need not doubt that we are forgiven.
But sometimes we feel shame when we have done nothing wrong. It may be something simple, like sneezing in the quiet part of a symphony. Or perhaps something more serious, such as when you accidentally hurt someone. That is when it is good to remember that God knows what happened and still loves us.
The best way to remember this is by living as God commands, by loving God and our neighbor. If you believe in Jesus, you love God, because you trust that God sent his Son to save us. So we know that God forgives us even before we ask him to. If you love your neighbor, then you reach out to the person you hurt, instead of hiding in shame, and try to help them.
When we stop living in shame and start living in love, we know that the Lord lives in us. And as both the second reading and the gospel point out, we can ask for whatever we need and receive it. For when God lives in us and we live in him, we won't ask for anything trivial or selfish. His Spirit teaches us how to pray with confidence and faith. We pray as Jesus taught in the Lord's Prayer: "Thy will be done." Our love and trust in God will help us to accept whatever God sends our way.

Praying for Unity National Day of Prayer is held on the first Thursday of May each year, inviting Americans of all faiths to pray for the country and its leaders. This year’s theme is Pray for America - UNITY, based upon Ephesians 4:3 which challenges us to mobilize unified public prayer for America, "Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."
On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law in the United States. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer. nationaldayofprayer.org

Saint of the day April 30. Pope Saint Pius V was the one responsible for the implementation of the results of the Council of Trent. Refusing to remove his Dominican habit, he is responsible for the tradition that popes wear white.
May 2. Saint Athanasius felt that spending his time and energy fighting for the truth of the doctrine of Christ’s divinity was worth it. He even endured five exiles to prove it. Through his writings and hard work, we today enjoy the truth of the Gospel in its fullness: Christ is both fully human and fully divine.
May 3. Saints Philip and James share a feast day because their relics were brought to Rome together in early May. We know nothing more about either saint than what is found in the Scriptures. There we are told that they were apostles, and tradition has it that they were both martyred.

Pope Francis has added the Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church, to the Roman Calendar on the Monday following Pentecost Sunday.
“The joyous veneration given to the Mother of God by the contemporary Church, in light of reflection on the mystery of Christ and on his nature, cannot ignore the figure of a woman (cf. Gal 4:4), the Virgin Mary, who is both the Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church.,” according to the decree. “This celebration will help us to remember that growth in the Christian life must be anchored to the Mystery of the Cross, to the oblation of Christ in the Eucharistic Banquet and to the Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the Redeemed, the Virgin who makes her offering to God.”

Vincentian reflection In the Gospel today, Jesus says “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do
nothing.” Indeed, by helping the poor we can “bear much fruit” and we find that with Jesus we can do everything. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul showed that you are indeed disciples of Jesus as it brought your love by assisting families by providing for food, utility, rent and other bills. God Bless you!
Stewardship thought Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. - 1 JOHN 3:18
Regarding our Catholic faith, do you “walk the talk?” Do your actions reflect what it means to be a good disciple? Are you an active participant at Sunday Mass? Are you joyful when participating in parish ministry? Do you give gratefully and generously with your financial support to your parish and other Church needs? If not, it’s not too late to start!
Treasures from our tradition In medieval times, one country, Scotland, linked its economy to the liturgy. Four holy days of the church calendar were keyed to the legal year. On these days, rents were due, clergy and servants were paid, and contracts and leases would begin or end. The term days were Pentecost (called Whitsunday), the Feast of Saint Martin on November 11 (Martinmas), the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 (Candlemas), and August 2 (Lammas), a harvest festival. On Lammas day, the first loaf of bread from the summer wheat harvest was given to the village priest. After the Reformation, which swept the Catholic festivals away, the term days were gradually detached from the old feasts. It was only in 1990 that the term days were anchored on the 28th of February, May, August, and November. Today the old Scottish universities are the last hold-outs, still naming their terms or semesters after the old festivals. Scottish students today may not know about the liturgical year, but they still call the fall term Martinmas, and the spring session Candlemas. -Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Volunteer(s) wanted
The Saint Hugh Conference of the Society of Saint Vincent DePaul is how our parish responds to those who come to us in their need. The Society trains members in making a response in charity while maintaining the confidentiality of those receiving help. Our conference is in need of volunteers to respond to those who request our assistance. Call the SVdP extension (+4) at 708.447.3108 to request more information.
Assistance is needed with making the in-stock Scrip (formerly Manna) available for purchase after the Masses. Volunteers are stationed at the doors of church for ten minutes following the Mass at which they are scheduled. Helpers are needed at 4:00pm Saturdays and 8:00am Sundays. Contact Christine Alfred at the parish office.
Question of the Week How do I think God will prune my branch of the vine? What part of me is withered and should be burned? What part of me is bearing the most fruit? How can I make the vine stronger and healthier?
