Dear Montana Model UN Delegates and Advisors:
Welcome to the 51st Annual Montana Model UN (MMUN) High School Conference. Since 1966, students from Montana and surrounding states have attended MMUN to represent countries from around the world, debate international issues, and develop their skills in research, writing, public speaking, and negotiation.
This conference is made possible through the generous support of many people. UM students, faculty, and administrators work hard to make the conference a valuable and fun experience for all participants.
We would especially like to recognize the work of Secretary-General/External Jared Halvorson, Secretary-General/Internal Wyatt Smith, Teaching Assistant Dani Howlett, and College of Humanities and Sciences Office Manager Dani McLaughlin. We are also grateful to the students in Political Science 337 (Model UN), who are staffing the committees.
We hope you will enjoy the conference. Challenge yourself to speak up on important international issues. Talk with UM faculty and students. Visit our library, bookstore, and art galleries.
We are delighted you are here and hope you will consider making the University of Montana part of your academic future.
Sincerely,
2

Dear Montana Model UN Delegates,
We are honored to serve as the Secretaries-General for the 2016 Montana Model UN Conference.
This year, 350 students from 17 Montana and Idaho high schools have registered to attend the conference. Together, you are representing 96 of the UN’s 193 Member States. We hope your experience will be challenging and fun, and we look forward to hearing your ideas for solving world problems.
As you debate your committee’s topics, remember to represent your country realistically and diplomatically. In addition, as you write and negotiate draft resolutions, look for opportunities to collaborate with others. Many of the issues debated here will be solved only through sustained cooperation.
If you have any questions about the topics or parliamentary procedure, please ask us or your committee staff. Also feel free to talk with us about our experiences at the University of Montana. MMUN is a great way to find out about college life.
Welcome to the UM campus, and good luck in your deliberations!
Sincerely,
Wyatt Smith Jared Halvorson
