Cómo se dice Spanglish en español? By Sandra Y. Desjardins
Have you ever been patiently waiting in line and overheard a conversation that you weren’t sure was primarily in English or Spanish. Don’t worry, you aren’t the only one! More and more often, people are speaking in Spanglish, a combination of English and Spanish. With the population of Hispanics on the rise, the likelihood of stumbling across a Spanglish conversation is inevitable.
According to the 2010 Census, 308.7 million people resided in the United States on April 1, 2010, of which 50.5 million (or 16 percent) were of Hispanic or Latino origin (Ennis, Ríos-Vargas, & Albert, 2011). For many incoming immigrants, Spanish is their primarylanguage and they only speak enough English to get by.
As Latino immigrants settle into their new country, their American-born children are 88% more likely to speak English very well (Hakimzadeh & Cohn, 2007). These bilingual children are at a wonderful advantage, but will sometimes use an English word right in the middle of a Spanish sentence or vice versa.
So the next time you hear, El está afuera, but I don’t know what he’s doing or the new car es del hombre que vive next door (Arrieta, 1994), just smile and go with the flow, because Spanglish is more than likely here to stay.

Texas is well-known for its Tejano Music so there are always artist that can bring you to your dancing feet as soon as they start to sing. Miguel Hernandez is one of those very talented artists. He has a great sound, a beautiful voice, and the talent to write his own music. His life experiences not only make for great lyrics, but it also helps him connect with his fans.
I had the privilege of speaking with Miguel and he was one of the most humble and charming people I have ever met.He definitely has Tejano pride and is undoubtedly one of Texas’ up-and-coming entertainers. Miguel Hernandez has already won the hearts and loyalty of many fans and he is continuing to gain a huge fan base.
Here is what he had to say:
Conexiones Latino: Miguel, are you originally from the Texas?Miguel Hernandez: No, I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan.
CL: Did you decide to just become a Tejano one day or were there things that influenced you?
MH: (Laughs) I was actually introduced to Tejano Music when I was about 13 years old. Before that, all I listened to was rock and heavy metal. The first Tejano Music band I ever opened for was Gary Hobbs and to see the venue we were at and to see how packed the arena got made me realize that, “this was it; this is what I want to do”. Ever since then, I started playing with local Tejano bands and this has been my career since that moment. After that, at the age of 18, I was picked up to play for Stephanie Lynn and that is the reason for the move to San Antonio.
CL: Was being a singer/Tejano singer a career you have always wanted to get in to?
MH: Yes. My mother and my sister are both artists/vocalists back in Michigan and they taught me how to sing. Watching my mother and sister perform helped fuel my passion for music. And with my dad being their promoter and manager, I’d say that music is in my blood.
CL: Do you think or are you hoping that your children will follow in your footsteps?
MH: You know, that’is a really tricky question because part of me does and part of me doesn’t. I would rather see them stay in school and become doctors, because I know the struggles and the hardships behind this life - like doors getting shut in your face. But as long as they keep pushing through and they love what they are doing and they have a passion for the music then they can make it happen if they really want it. But it is a very tough road. From the parent’s aspect, we all want our kids to do better than what we did or what we went through.
CL: I know that “Life in Lyric” is your third CD/Album, but what I would like to know is what was it like to record your first CD/Album?
MH: You know, my first album was very low budget, but it was under my independent label and it was great because I had already promoted it and got my name out there. When it came down to “Después de Mucho” I wanted to kind of expand my style and what I could do. Since I listen to everything and I love all types of music, I wanted to give something new to the public that they could appreciate, like Boleros, Mariachi, Merengue, Salsa, Tejano or Cumbias. Unfortunately, I don’t think a lot of people were digging that kind of album. I think they just wanted a Tejano Album - I wanted to quench everyone’s thirst of music but it wasn’t a hit with a lot of people.
CL: Do you write your own songs?
MH: Yes I do. CL: Do you consider your New Album “Life in Lyric” your most personal album, like an auto-biography?
MH: Yes, absolutely. A lot of that material is written as a biography of my last few years.
CL: So when fans hear this CD/Album they will be “feeling” Miguel Hernandez, right?
MH: They should (laughs) because there is some pretty deep stuff in there. Although my music is there for people to enjoy, I always strive to make people think and feel the lyrics. My music is not just repeated lines, there’s actually deep feeling there.
CL: Wow, that’s interesting because there are a lot of bands out there that do not put their heart and soul into their music; they just want to make a quick buck.You actually put your passion into the music, do you think that’s what fans really want?
Miguel Hernandez: Exactly, that is why I wrote “Siempre Contigo”, which is the last song on the Album “Life in Lyric”, it was written for my Fiancée. So the songs on “Life in Lyric” go from very sad to the best thing in my life. I really hope that the fans see that my songs are meaningful. I want everyone to be able to see that there was a lot of thought put into each and every song.
CL:What do you think is the most important thing that will keep Tejano Music moving?
MH: I think artist need to stay true to themselves. I feel that if you are going to play music, you should do it for the love of the music. I mean, it’s their prerogative to make the music for their own reasons. But a true Tejano Artist, who wants to keep playing Tejano Music, to keep La Onda alive, is about being true.
CL: What does the phrase “La Onda Tejana” mean to you?
MH: To me, “La Onda Tejana” is a traditional foundation with different twists on it - like jazz, rock, and blues. To me, that’s what makes Tejano Music such a unique genre. It’s a foundation with a twist of everyone’s different outlook, which makes it so great. It compiles the traditional with the youthful [new].
CL: What is your opinion on the future of Tejano Music?
MH: I hope that it bounces back. I see it kind of happening with the internet radio stations and a lot of the new Tejano magazines that are starting back up. A lot of people see it dying out and hurting, but with everyone pulling together trying to bring it back, it won’t fall through the cracks. It all comes down to playing the new artists and bringing out new music. Yes we have our Godfather’s of Tejano and the 80’s bands that built the foundation for Tejano, but we need new artists to help bring it back. We need to get our youth more involved with this music because they feel they have no other outlet except for R&B and Hip-Hop and they are missing out on a great culture. So I believe that if the radio stations bring out the new Tejano artists then that will help bring Tejano back.
CL: What are your plans for the future of your music?
MH: Well, I actually have a new single that will be dropping on the 28th of February. There will also be a new Album coming out in the summer. We will be doing all the promotion this summer, as well as putting together a three band tour. So it will be a fun and interesting year.
CL: What words of encouragement would you give our Hispanic teens so that they continue to follow their dreams?
MH: Just to stay focused on what they want to do and stay positive. There is a lot of hardship and closing doors, but when one door closes another one will open. Stay clean, drug-free, and finish school. If one thing doesn’t work out then at least they have an education to fall back on. But always follow your dreams and never give up.
CL: Is there anything you would like to share with fans?
MH: Only to please drop in to the social networks and leave reviews or messages about what they like about the music - even what they didn’t like. Those critiques are what everyone sees and if one person sees that their friend liked something then they will check it out too; it creates a chain reaction. Also, support Tejano Music. Every time there is a new artist, please, support them and give them a chance.
This was the end of the interview and I was definitely intrigued with his responses. He is truly what La Onda Tejana is all about. His love and passion for music makes him an icon in his own right - he truly deserves to be loved by fans everywhere. Here at Conexiones Latino, we love supporting up-and-coming Tejano artist like Miguel Hernandez. As a huge Tejano fan, I listened to some of the tracks on his newest CD and felt the passion and love through his music and lyrics.. There is no denying that Miguel Hernandez has passion and love for Tejano Music, but it doesn’t stop there because he has much love for his fans as well.
Look for his music through ITunes, Pandora, CD Baby, CD Exchange, and many other music sites. He will definitely win your heart with his voice, music, lyrics, and passion. There’s no question about it; Miguel Hernandez is the future of La Onda Tejana.

Ingredients2 pounds Beef neck bones or Beef Shank 1 medium onion- Diced1 tablespoon salt & 1 tablespoon pepper12 ounces Beef Stock or Broth 12 ounces Stewed Tomatoes4 ears corn & 4 medium potatoes (unpeeled)2 chayote or zucchini6 carrots & 1 head cabbage Cilantro, Limes, Onions, Corn Tortillas & Sliced Jalapenos for garnish
InstructionsCut beef shank or neck bones into large chunks, keeping some attached to the bone (bone marrow adds to the taste of this great recipe). Saute the beef chunks with the diced onion, salt, and pepper. After beef is brown add it to the beef stock and the stewed tomatoes – don't forget to add the Beef Bones. Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer for one hour, until the beef is tender. After vegetables have been wash cut each ear of corn and each potato into quarters; Cut carrots and chayote or zucchini into desired sizes. Add the vegetables to the soup. Add water to cover the vegetables and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Cut the head of cabbage into 1/2 and then into thirds and then add the cabbage to the mixture and simmer for another 10 minutes. Serve with heated corn tortillas. Cilantro, Lime, Onions & Jalapenos may be added according, to taste. (chopped jalapenos is a perfect addition to cure a hangover)
