Bibliography/ReferenceHerring, S. C., & Paolillo, J. C. (2006). Gender and genre variation in weblogs. Journal of Sociolinguistics, 10(4), 439-459.

Getting StartedFinding a topic

Page 10: Conducted by Hayati Abdul & Umarani Jayapal Resource Librarians (Sociology)

Finding a topic

Scan newspapers, textbooks and module readings for topic ideas and suggestions. Think of what you have read or seen recently that may be of interest to you.Draw on your personal experiences or other modules, etc. for inspiration.Search the library catalogue for interesting reads. Reference sources such as encyclopaedias are good for overview of topics, definitions, etc.

Browsing the Wikipedia can provide some topic ideas. Keep in mind when doing so that anyone can change and edit entries in Wikipedia.

Page 12: Conducted by Hayati Abdul & Umarani Jayapal Resource Librarians (Sociology)

Before Searching a Database…It is important to think about how a database will interpret your search topic

You can search single words or phrases – usually no problem! You can combine terms and phrases – important to combine those terms effectively.

Plan your search strategyCreating a search statement can save time!
