Concert description: A thoughtful fusion of Middle Eastern classical music and traditional American jazz and blues as stewed up in Chicago, the crossroads of the Midwest. Featuring: Rami Gabriel – Oud, Buzuq, Guitar Miles Jay – Bass, Lyra Ronnie Malley – Percussion, Oud Jonathan Doyle – Reeds Alex Udvary – Cymbalom Bio: Lebanese-Egyptian oud and guitar player Dr. Rami Gabriel grew up in Toronto. He has been composing and performing within and across Arabic and American musical traditions in Chicago for the last decade and has produced two albums of original work with funding from the Illinois Arts Council: Oud Blues and New Traditions (2013) and In Care of (2016). Rami studied Oud under Dr. Scott Marcus (UCSB), Dr. Alfred Gemil (Cairo), Osama Zeadan (Cairo), and Mehmet Bitmez (Istanbul). He is equally trained on the electric and acoustic Guitar, performing and recording swing jazz with Alfonso Ponticelli and Joel Paterson. Dr. Gabriel has studied the relationship between Arabic music theory and African precursors to American blues as a Fellow at the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College Chicago. Past performances include: Disney Hall in Los Angeles, CA (Glenn Branca, Symphony 13); WBEZ Chicago Public Radio; The Green Mill cocktail lounge; The Chicago Cultural Center; The Old Town School of Folk music (Maurer Hall); The International Society for Improvised Music conference (NYC); The Midwinter, Summer and Art in the Barn Midwest Gypsy Swing fests in Madison, WI.
