STYLE: MISSION, CIRCA 1924

THIS UNIqUE HOUSE IS ASSOCIATED WITH AN OUTSTANDING FIGURE OF EARLY FORT COLLINS: SARA AVERY, OF AVERY HOUSE FAME. WHEN HER HUSBAND FRANKLIN DIED IN CALIFORNIA IN 1923 SARA RETURNED TO FORT COLLINS, WHERE A BUILDING PERMIT IN HER NAME AND THE NAME OF HER SON-IN-LAW EDWARD WOODWORTH WAS ISSUED IN 1924 FOR THIS TWELVE ROOM DOUBLE BRICK HOUSE. UPON ITS COMPLETION SHE OCCUPIED THE FIRST FLOOR WHILE HER DAUGHTER ETHEL AVERY WOODWORTH AND HER FAMILY OCCUPIED THE SECOND. SARA DIED ONLY A YEAR LATER AT AGE 73.LATER RESIDENTS INCLUDED THE WILLIAM AND PAULA GILTNER FAMILY; HE WAS THE OWNER OF BILL GILTNER INSURANCE AGENCY.

THIS MISSION STYLE HOME IS ESSENTIALLY INTACT AND INCLUDES A MASSIVE FIREPLACE, A BAY WINDOW ON THE WEST AND A STREET ELEVATION FEATURING DECORATIVE ARCADES. STUCCO COVERS FLEMISH BRICK AND ACTS AS A PRESERVATIVE. IN THE REAR, A CENTERED DOOR WAS MOVED FROM THE NORTHWEST qUADRANT OF THE HOUSE TO IMPROVE SAFETY ACCESS. OF THE MATCHED EXTERNAL STAIRCASES, THAT ON THE EAST IS ORIGINAL, WHILE THE ONE TO THE WEST REPLACED THE PREVIOUS DOOR AND PORCH. BARBARA HOEHN ALSO ADDED A WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE ENTRYWAY WHILE SUCCESSFULLY STRIVING TO RETAIN THE HISTORIC LOOK OF THE DWELLING HERE AS ELSEWHERE.

INSIDE, THE FRONT PORTION OF THE FIRST FLOOR INCLUDES MANY ORIGINAL ITEMS, AMONG THEM THE ENTRYWAY, THE HARDWOOD FLOORS, AND THE WINDOWS. THE FIREPLACE WAS REDONE AND A SMALL ELEVATOR AND A BATHROOM SHOWER WERE ENGINEERED FOR WHEELCHAIR ACCESS. THE KITCHEN AT THE BACK WAS ORIGINALLY A MUD PORCH. ROOMS ON THE UPPER FLOOR ARE SMALLER BUT CONFIGURED TO MATCH THOSE DOWNSTAIRS. A BATHROOM HERE WAS REMODELED TO CREATE A MEDITERRANEAN FEEL AND INCLUDES TILES FROM ITALY. ON BOTH FLOORS THE LARGE ARCHED WINDOWS WERE CREATED IN THE 1940S, REPLACING PORCHES.

WITH ITS ASSOCIATION WITH FAMILIES FROM THE HISTORY OF FORT COLLINS, THIS IMPOSING STRUCTURE IS A GRACIOUS REMINDER OF OUR PAST.
