    Parking is available with 24-hour access in theBuchanon Parking Garage, under the restaurant.The entrance is on Clark Street directly acrossfrom the entrance to the Hilton. It costs $4.00

    per hour until 6:00 pm Monday through Fridaywith validation. After 6:00 pm Monday throughFriday parking is free with proper validation. Ifyou arrive before 6pm, your validation is goodfor both the $4.00 per hour charge before 6pmand for free parking afterwards. Validation isdone directly through Mackey's Pub, not throughDC ACM.

    Additional free parking is available in the CrystalCity Shops Garage. This lot is available onlyafter 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and allday on weekends. The entrance is on 23rdStreet next to the doors to the Crystal CityShops.

    21st Annual Computer Security Day

    November 30, 2009

    Computer Security Day was started in 1988 to help raise awareness of computerrelated security issues. The goal is to remind people to protect their computersand information. This annual event is held around the world on November 30thalthough some organizations choose to have functions on the next business day ifit falls on a weekend.

    Computer Security Day is a great opportunity for information securityprofessionals and their organizations to raise the level of awareness within theirusers. Please visit the official website to download Computer Security Dayposters and 2010 calendars.

    Membership

    As of November 23, 2009, the DC ACM had 158registered members. This total number includes 82Members and 76 Associate Members.

    The membership year begins in January. Memberswho paid dues in 2009 are expected to either renew

    at the full year rate of $12.00 or change their statusto Associate Member. All DC ACM members willreceive detailed instructions on the membershiprenewal process at the beginning of January.

    Website Team Development Group

    The DC ACM website, which is currently Sharepointbased, may in the future be converted to Linux. Ifthis intrigues you, then please consider joining theWebsite Teams Development Group (DG).

    The DG is still in the project planning phase.Although it is still a very early stage, new volunteersare welcome. Please contactAndrew Conklin if youhave any questions.

    Washington Academy of SciencesCapSci Conference 2010

    Call for Papers

    On Saturday and Sunday, March 27-28, 2010, theDC ACM will be participating in CapSci 2010 at theConference Facility of the National ScienceFoundation in Arlington, VA (Ballston Metro).

    The Washington Academy of Sciences and itsAffiliated Societies, of which the DCACM is one, willhold the fourth in their series of biennial pan-AffiliateConferences, Capital Science 2010. The conferencewill serve as an umbrella for scientific presentations,seminars, tutorials, and talks. These pan-AffiliateConferences underline the fact that the Washington,DC area is not only the political capital of the countrybut, in many respects, the nation's intellectual capital-- with several major universities and governmentlaboratories that are the homes of an astonishingnumber of Nobel laureates.

    Any DC ACM members who would be interested inpresenting a paper are invited to prepare an abstract.On-line registration, directions, and other conferenceinformation, can be found at the WAS CapSci website.

    However, please note, submissions from individualswill not be accepted. All submissions (estimates,abstracts, papers) MUST be made through theappropriate affiliate Society. Please contact ViceChair Kent Miller if you are interested in being aDC ACM applicant.

    Vacancies on the Executive Coun cil

    The position ofAwards Chair remains unfilled.However, as we approach the season for regionalscience fairs (most are held in March), we arelooking for someone who can take on theresponsibility of coordinating the volunteer

    judges for DC ACM awards. The Awards Chair isa voting member of the Executive Council and isappointed by the Chair.

    The position ofCommunications Chair willbecome vacant in January 2010 as Cora Dicksonsteps down. Primary responsibilities for thisposition include compiling and editing

    CompuTopics, ensuring timely e-mailannouncements to the members, updating theDC ACM website regularly, and coordinating withthe two website teams (Technical Support Groupand Development Group). The CommunicationsChair is a voting member of the Executive Counciland is appointed by the Chair.

We are a localprofessional chapter of the Association forComputing Machinery (ACM), which was founded in1947. Currently there are more than 2,200 ACMmembers in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
