IoT Hasnt Achieved its True Potential:Prateek Pashine, Tata TeleservicesBy Madhav Mohan, 14-Oct-2014

To further the cause of IOT in India, Prateek Pashine, head-Enterprise Business, Tata Teleservices throws light on what IoT isand how its sensors work.

Internet of things is doing the rounds in tech

    industry. Prateek Pashine, head- Enterprise

Business, Tata Teleservices talks about how IoT

works and what potential it holds.

Do you think IoT replicates the human decision

    making process?

As the definition goes, The Internet of Things (IoT)

is the combination of sensors, a network, and

applications. What makes it almost human is the

fact that it replicates the human decision

making processes. Every minute of our lives, we

process various kinds of information and then take decisions based on the information provided to

us. The concept of IoT follows the same process except that the information is being collected by

sensors and processed by an application

In the IoT world, objects and machines constantly talk to each other based on which intelligent

information is collated, analysed, and appropriate action or decisions are taken. This is very similar to

how we humans would handle any situation or task.

    How do IoT sensors work?

In todays digital world, objects and devices contain sensors, which capture various kinds of

information on a real time basis. This information could relate to a temperature sensor in a

refrigerator or a door opening sensor connected to an office door, or even a GPS sensor in a vehicle

or a shipping container to track real time location.

IoT sensors measure different parameters in real time and allow IoT systems to use that data to take

decisions and trigger required action. For example, for a refrigerated vehicle delivering ice-creams to

retail stores, the parameters to be sensed are internal temperature of the refrigerator

and the location of the vehicle. If for any reason the temperature varies and the ice-cream starts

melting, the temperature can be either lowered remotely or the vehicle can be diverted to the nearest

    store.

How critical is high speed broadband connectivity requirement in IoT?

Connectivity plays a critical role in enabling IoT applications. The speed of the connectivity depends

on whether the use case requires processing of information on a real-time basis or not. In

applications such as healthcare, security & surveillance, industrial automation, real time availability of

sensor information could be what makes the ultimate difference in success or failure of the process,

    which has been automated.

How much can we trust the IoT?

Like any other technological advancements, IoT will present aspects, which will need to be debated.

At the end of the day, if the applications are used for the correct purpose, the advantages will far

outweigh the concerns. As an example, home surveillance may pose privacy issues, but it leads to

peace of mind. Ultimately, people will evaluate the pros and cons and take an informed decision

    depending on their primary need.

Companies will need to ensure that applications are implemented properly and incorporated to meet

the standards of privacy and security requirements.

When do you think IoT to be ready for the future?

IoT or M2M applications have been in play for quite sometime now but they havent achieved their

true potential. Applications have been implemented in various industries such as energy,

    transportation, and healthcare.

The current approach of deploying M2M applications is essentially vertical in nature and is not

scalable. For IoT to reach the scale, every global research report predicts that a host of things need to

be in place such as device or sensor ecosystem, security and privacy standards, scalable IoT or M2M

platform, domain applications, and content as well as integration standards.

    Is the CIO Role NearingExtinction?

    New technologies are shifting

power to the hands of the

    user, endangering the CIO

    role. But do Indian CIOs

consider that a threat or an

    opportunity?

Its Not About Doing Social, itsAbout Being Social

    Vineet Gupta, MD, 22feet

    Tribal Worldwide, a digital

    marketing firm, shares why

    organizations need to take

    social media more seriously

and how they can leverage it to take their

    businesses ahead.

Business Security RemainsUnthreatened by Wearable Tech

    Indian CIOs speak about how

    to

    effectively handle wearable devices and

the potential security risks attached to it. With the

right plans in place, businesses will be able to

maximize the benefits and minimize its

    drawbacks, they say.

App Development PromisesMassive Growth: Raju Vegesna,Zoho

    Internet penetration and

Indian startups will act as a

catalyst in the area of building

    industry-specific apps says

    Raju Vegesna of Zoho. Security

    remains the major concern.
