When you start the computer and finish “booting”, you will see thewindows desktop screen. This is the GUI that we will use.

The color, background

picture (called wallpaper)

and icons might be

different on each computer

depending on how the user

wants.

Locate the following on your computer screen:Desktop, Icons (if any), Start Menu, Search Box (or magnifying glass), Taskbar and the System tray. You can also see Time & Date.

The ”Desktop” is where you can work and put all your programsicons (if you want).In the picture below you see a Desktop with many icons, Start Menuopen and also a window on the desktop.

The Taskbar is the bar at the bottom of the screen containing thestart menu button and other items..

The Taskbar may also contain programs shortcuts used to quicklystart a program. The “Taskview” is a special function that we will talkabout later.

Icons represent either programs, user files, or folders that you canplace on your desktop for quick access.This means that you put the programs you use a lot and yourpersonal files on the desktop if you use them a lot.

See the picture on left.There are many iconson the Desktop.

The Start Menu will be shown if you click your mouse “Left” buttonon the Start Menu Button on the lower left side of your screen

You can also get thismenu if you pressthe key labeled withWindows Icon onthe keyboard

The Start Menu contains all the programs installed on the computerand also important actions such as Settings and Shut Down / Restart.

Before we can start using Windows 10 GUI, we must learn somebasics about using the Mouse which is a “Pointing Device”.

There many different types but we will consider “Standard” Mouseand also ”Touchpad” used in laptops.

The mouse control the movement of the pointer on screen. Youmust learn to be “precise” where to click and not to click.

Left Mouse Button

Right Mouse Button

• Left mouse button is the most important one to do most of theactions.

• Right mouse button function changes depending on what theuser is doing.

Using the Mouse: Single Click

The most important action is to click the left mouse button.This is a single short click. Press the key with your pointing finger.

One Click

Move the mouse to the Start Menu Button and Clickthe left mouse button.

This will open the StartMenu.Click it again or click onthe desktop and themenu will close.

When we say “Click”, we always mean Left Mouse Button Click.

The right mouse button function depends on “Where you click”.This is a single short click. Press the key with your middle finger.

Move the mouse pointer to

any free place on your

desktop and right-click. A

menu will appear (pop up

menu).

In this example “Personalize” is used to change your desktopbackground if you want (see how).

If you right click on the taskbar, a different menu will pop up.

To remove it, just click (left mouse button) anywhere outside themenu on the desktop.

This is a special menu for Windows settings (Don’t change).

Double clicking works only with left-mouse button and is used towork with icons (applications, files, folders).

You click-click (twice) quickly on the button.

Move the pointer to the desktop icon for“Calculator” or “Paint” application. Double clickon each one to start the program.

Dragging is a special action that is used to “Move” items.

You point the mouse on an item, click and HOLD.Then keep holding while you move the mouse.This is known as “Dragging”.Release (leave the mouse button), when done.

Point on the Paint or Calculator icon, drag todifferent place on desktop.

Dragging is also used to move the window of an application or folder(We will see later). To drag the Calculator, place the pointer on top ofits window, drag to new location.

Closing a window or an application

The easiest way to close a window you open or an application is byclicking on the (x) at the top-right corner.There are other ways that we will study later.

Shutting Down Windows

When you finish using the computer, you must turn it off.One of the ways to do this is to open the Start Menu Click on Power
