COMPULSORY

QUALIFICATION

Various trades are regulated to ensure public safety as well as that of workers.

To practice a regulated trade, you must have a certificate of vocational qualification.

COMPULSORY QUALIFICATION

THE ACT RESPECTING WORKFORCE VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND QUALIFICATION PROVIDES THAT:

¢ workers must have a certificate of qualification to practice

regulated trades or vocations

¢ employers must ensure that employees have the required

certificate of qualification

A CERTIFICATE OF QUALIFICATION ISSUED BY THE MINISTÈRE DU TRAVAIL, DE L’EMPLOI ET DE LA SOLIDARITÉ SOCIALE (MTESS) IS MANDATORY IN ORDER TO WORK IN THE FOLLOWING FIELDS:

¢ electricity*

¢ explosives (blaster)*

¢ natural gas and propane

¢ halocarbons*

¢ stationary engines and pressure vessels

¢ elevator mechanic*

¢ pressure vessel welding*

¢ refrigeration systems*

¢ water treatment (drinking water and wastewater)

¢ pipe fitting (plumbing, heating, etc.)*

*For non-construction activities

COMPULSORY QUALIFICATION IS GENERALLY A THREE-STEP PROCESS.

STEP 1: EnrolmentTo obtain the certificate of vocational qualification required to practice a regulated trade, you must start by enrolling at the Centre administratif de la qualification professionnelle (CAQP).

STEP 2: ApprenticeshipYour apprenticeship must take place in a workplace setting. You must therefore be hired by a company in order to undertake the apprenticeship program. Note that you must carry a valid apprenticeship card with you at all times.

STEP 3: Qualification examMost apprenticeship programs require participants to take a qualification exam that is prepared by the MTESS.

These exams are conducted in different regions of Québec.
