Research Activities at UMASS Lowell 1999-present Director, Chemicals Policy and Science Program, Lowell Center for
Sustainable Production
Established and direct several on-going research and outreach initiatives, including:
Chemicals Policy Initiative – Research and outreach on tools and policies
to reform chemicals regulation and to support the development and application of safer chemicals and products. Development of methods and training materials in green chemistry and alternatives assessment. Has resulted in UMASS Lowell global leadership on chemicals management and safer chemicals assessment and the formation of a business network called the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council (www.chemicalspolicy.org and www.greenchemistryandcommerce.org) Precautionary Principle Initiative – Research and outreach to reshape science-policy and decision-making in the face of uncertainty to be more proactive and precautionary in nature. Has resulted in UMASS Lowell global leadership on the precautionary principle and its application in science and policy. Includes the Toward Tomorrow Project – designed to advance multi-stakeholder dialog on concrete objectives and metrics to achieve sustainable development (www.towardtomorrow.org). Massachusetts Clean Tech Initiative – Research and outreach to reorient the Massachusetts economy towards competitiveness and job creation in cleaner technologies: renewable energy, green chemistry, sustainable nanotechnology and biomaterials, and recycled and renewable materials. Has resulted in UMASS Lowell statewide leadership in cleantech. Safer Products Solutions Center – Initiative to establish a coordinating center to provide a “one-stop” place for businesses seeking safer alternatives to problem chemicals for materials development, testing, and assessment. Other research efforts: Cleaner Production Project – Technical support to advance training and application of clean production in the United States and globally; Greater Boston Body Burden Project – Research and community engagement aimed at studying levels of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in breast milk of women in Lowell and Cambridge, MA and potential routes of exposure.
