ForewordThe Comprehension Cloze section is one of the most challenging sections in the PSLE paper. There are no helping words given and a student requires specific skills to be able to score for this section. Some students manage to get by easily, with the answers just ‘popping out’ magically. Many others struggle to find the right words to fill in the blanks. Contrary to popular belief that you cannot ‘study’ for this section, you actually can! Just like a detective who searches for clues to find the answers to crack a case, a student learns to hunt for clues and apply the right techniques to derive the correct answers in a passage. This book reveals useful techniques that you can learn and apply in search for those clues together with ample practice to work on.
To score for this section, you need to:
1 have good general knowledge of different types of issues and topics to answer the ‘Common Sense (CS)’ types of questions,
2 build on your general knowledge by reading widely on an extensive range of current issues and topics,
3 master a wide range of vocabulary words and have a good grasp of phrasal verbs,
4 have sufficient practices to hone your ‘detective’ skills in identifying the different types of techniques to be used,
5 be exposed to the different types of techniques to be used through more practices to help you sharpen your ability to put the correct answers in the blanks.
This book provides the most comprehensive exercises for this section by providing a varied range of passages to enable you to hone and master the answering techniques.

It was my first time watching a live show and I was thrilled to be
sitting in the front row. I waited patiently and nervously in my seat for the show to start.
The audience fidgeted impatiently as they anticipated the start of the show.
Slowly, the lights dimmed. With thunderous music, the curtains opened. The lanky

proud to show the audience his latest magic tricks.

BIRDSBirds have been around for hundreds and millions of years. They are known to have
been 1. (
) from dinosaurs. Birds live and occupy habitats in all seven continents,
2. (
) a larger diversity of them can be found in the tropical regions. Birds come
in all shapes and sizes, ranging from the largest ostrich to the smallest bee hummingbird.
Birds are subdivided into two major 3. (

that are 4. (

them from almost all
other animals. Feathers are a unique 6. (

of birds, and they are the
only animals with them. Feathers facilitate flight, provide insulation and can be a form of
camouflage. Birds feed mainly on seeds, insects, fruit, nectar and plants. However, there are
also 7. (
) that eat those smaller than they are.
Birds communicate with 8. (
) called bird calls. These 9. (

are
for a myriad of purposes, including attracting mates, claiming of territories, identifying other
birds and serving as a warning to others of potential predators.
Birds that are reared and raised for their meat and eggs are known as domesticated
birds or poultry. They are the largest 10. (
) of animal protein 11. (
)
by humans. There are also birds that are nearly 12. (
) due to man’s activities.
More than one hundred bird species have become extinct, and many more are listed as
13. (
) species up to today. The most common reason is 14. (
)
to habitat loss. Deforestation results in forests and trees being cut down to make
15. (
) for more land. Consequently, birds lose their nests and homes when the
trees are removed. Thus it is important to preserve and restore the birds’ habitats to prevent
more bird species from becoming the next dodo bird.

In this case, the answer could not be found within the sentence itself, or the sentences before and after the sentence with the blank. As such, you should proceed to search for clues from the paragraph before or after the sentence with the blank.
B Contextual Clues
As you begin to read the passage before attempting to find the answers, ask yourself, “What is the topic of this passage?” This will help you narrow down the contextual clues and related vocabulary found in the passage.
If the passage is about bees, then you should start thinking about words, themes and vocabulary associated with the topic given. Some of these words might be the answers to the blanks in the passage! Use the 5W1H(What,Where,When,Who,Why,How) to help you generate the different possible words related to the topic.
Here are some examples:
