01 Preface & Contents_Comprehension Cloze Techniques Book 1.indd 1 7/11/2017 11:49:56 AM
ForewordThe Comprehension Cloze section is one of the most challenging sections in the PSLE paper. There are no helping words given and a student requires specific skills to be able to score for this section. Some students manage to get by easily, with the answers just ‘popping out’ magically. Many others struggle to find the right words to fill in the blanks. Contrary to popular belief that you cannot ‘study’ for this section, you actually can! Just like a detective who searches for clues to find the answers to crack a case, a student learns to hunt for clues and apply the right techniques to derive the correct answers in a passage. This book reveals useful techniques that you can learn and apply in search for those clues together with ample practice to work on.
To score for this section, you need to:
1 have good general knowledge of different types of issues and topics to answer the ‘Common Sense (CS)’ types of questions,
2 build on your general knowledge by reading widely on an extensive range of current issues and topics,
3 master a wide range of vocabulary words and have a good grasp of phrasal verbs,
4 have sufficient practices to hone your ‘detective’ skills in identifying the different types of techniques to be used,
5 be exposed to the different types of techniques to be used through more practices to help you sharpen your ability to put the correct answers in the blanks.
This book provides the most comprehensive exercises for this section by providing a varied range of passages to enable you to hone and master the answering techniques.

General method to useExpansion Method — when looking for hint(s)
Called the expansion method, it requires you to ‘expand’ your search for clues if you cannot
find what you are looking for. This is a useful method in search for clues in the passage.
Step 1: Look at the sentence itself for possible clues.
Tom has a best friend, and name is Jim.
Answer: his Hint: Jim
Step 2: If you are unable to find any hints in the sentence itself, look through the
sentences before and after the sentence with the blank.
I bring this toy robot wherever I go and my parents know that I love it very much. One day,
the toy robot broke down. I was very upset. parents immediately brought it to
the repair shop so that it could be repaired.Answer: MyHints from the previous sentences: my parentsNote
In this case, the answer could not be found in the sentence itself. As such, you should
proceed to search for clues from the sentences before or after the sentence with the blank.

pronouns, possessive adjectives or interrogatives. We refer them as PRs. Having them in a
passage will give you bonus marks, so be sure to score them!
Step 1: You need to decide what the blank is referring to by looking at the hint(s).
Step 2: Underline the hint(s) in the sentence.
Step 3: Fill in the blank with a suitable PR word.
The tables below show lists of PR words. Remember them as they provide options for you to

6 must-know specific techniques to master in order to score for Comprehension Cloze
Understanding and applying these techniques will help you to know the kinds of clues to look out for in order to fill in the blanks for the given passage.
The 6 techniques to use for Comprehension Cloze:
1 Same-Same (SS)
2 Compare and Contrast (CC)
3 Pronoun Reference (PR)
4 Phrases/Phrasal Verbs and Grammar (PG)
5 Conjunctions/Connectors (C)
6 Common Sense (CS)
1 Same-Same (SS)
Very often, the words in the passage will give you a hint to the answer. The hint(s) for the missing word or the missing word itself can be easily found in the sentences or phrases before or after the missing word. At times, the hint(s) may even be found in the later parts of the passage. Hence, you should cultivate the habit of reading the whole passage once before attempting to fill in the blanks as the answers might just be ‘staring’ at you!
Spotting these hints is the means to find the missing word as they describe or are related to it. Sometimes, the hint(s) could even be the missing word itself!
We can use the SS technique in the following ways to derive the missing words in the passage.
(a) Substitution with collective nouns/word groups
Types of clues to look out for: objects or nouns that are being described in the sentence
Example: There are many vehicles on the road, such as cars, lorries and motorcycles .
Note
The highlighted words are the hints that guide you to fill in the missing word!

This is the easiest! You will just need to read the passage once through carefully before attempting to fill in the blanks.
2 Compare and Contrast (CC)
Compare and contrast writing techniques are often used to illustrate differences and bring out the main message of a passage. To find the missing word in the blank, use an antonym or opposite word to the hint(s) you have found in the passage.
Example: This room is bright but the other room is dark .
Note
The highlighted words are the hints that guide you to fill in the missing word!
Try It Yourself!Fill in each blank with a suitable antonym (opposite word). Underline the hints in the sentence.
