BSCHS Football Team Spreads Mulch
Completion of Initial Renovations
The school building behind the church received a greatly needed
refresh this past summer. The 58 year old roof was replaced and
new windows and gutters were installed. Work was delayed a few
times when the heat index rose above 100, but it didn’t delay the
opening of the new school year.
It was great to see the outside of the building reflect all the
wonderful things that go on in the inside of the building. These
renovations were made possible by the generous donations and
pledges made through the Diocesan Living Our Mission Capital
Campaign the was held last fall. Read more about the renovations
being planned for next summer in the Message from the Pastor &
Principal on page 2.

Living Rosary
On Thursday, October 13, on the Feast day of Our
Lady of Fatima, our students participated in a
Living Rosary in the school gym. One decade was
prayed in Spanish as representatives from all
grades from Kindergarten through 8th grade
gathered. Mrs. Grawl encouraged all classes to
pray at least one decade of the rosary throughout
the month of October.
Members of the Bishop Sullivan Catholic High
School football team moved their practice to Star of
the Sea to spread 14,000 lbs. of rubber mulch on our
preschool and Kindergarten playground the
afternoon of Monday, October 24.
When the mulch arrived, Principal Kelly Lazzara
reached out to BSCHS to see if they would be
interested in a community service project. Football
Coach Chris Scott was happy to help. The team
carried 600 bags and spread it out in under 20
minutes! Several
players are
alumni of Star of
the Sea and were
recognized by
their younger
prayer partners
who still attend
school here.

Fall Mile Run
One of our favorite events has to be the Mile Runs
each Fall and Spring. Our 1st through 8th grade
classes each took turns running the “up and back”
course. Students must pick
up a popsicle stick at the
half way point to show
they completed the entire
mile. Parents are stationed
throughout the course and
cheer for each and every
child.
We have some super fast
runners. The Fall Mile Run
was held on Wednesday,

We are off to a wonderful new school year! We are
pleased to announce that our enrollment is on the rise.
We had more students on the first day of school for
the 2016-2017 school year than we did on the last day
of the previous school year.
Please take a moment to review our Annual Report
and see that we finished the 2015-2016 with a budget
surplus.
The school is moving in the right direction with
enrollment and fiscally. We are confident that as we
complete even more renovations next summer our
enrollment will continue to grow.
We are already making plans to begin extensive
renovations to the middle school building and the
removal of the learning cottages to make room for a
new addition to the middle school building to house
the administrative offices, faculty work room, and
middle school restrooms with an entrance providing
greater visibility from Pacific Avenue.
Also slated for next summer are some interior
renovations of the building behind the church
housing our PK-5th grade and media center.
It is not to late to donate to these projects. To learn
more about them and to make a contribution, please
feel free to contact Fr. Steve in the parish office or
Mrs. Lazzara in the school office at 757-428-8400.

The students were called forth to the Baptismal font
where each student was given a blessing and handed
their Religion book from which they will study the
word of God and come to know and deepen their
relationship with Jesus. Within its pages they can find
the tools to “put on the armor of God and be strong in
their Faith.”
All who gathered took a pledge to believe in
themselves and the ability to do the best at all times
and to treat others as we want to be treated. We
pledged to believe in the strength of our faith as the
foundation upon which we stand and we dedicated
ourselves to our work and to take pride in ourselves
and our school

Our Seventh Graders hold their newly blessed religion books
Putting on the Armor of Christ
Fifth grade students attended the Naval Air Station
Oceana's annual Air Show and first time Outdoor
STEM Laboratory along with other fifth grade
students from the Virginia Beach City Public Schools
on Friday, September 9th. This one-of-a-kind event
featured hands-on displays that dealt with robotics, 3D
printers, 3D game simulation, and basic physics
principles involved with aviation. Students also got to
climb on board several of the planes on display and
watch the Blue Angels perform. Students were also
entertained by Shockwave, the jet-powered truck, that
"flew" down the runway with flames shooting out
behind it.

Ava Morgan and Lila Large with their teacher, Mrs. Mitchell
Stay Strong in your Faith by putting on the armor of
God was the school-wide theme I introduced this
year’s Opening Prayer Service. As is our custom that
we begin every action with prayer we began our
school year giving thanks for the gift of our faith and
the gift of a Catholic education and to ask God’s
continued blessings on our studies and on all our
actions.
Going back to school is an exciting and challenging
time for kids. They make new friends, adjust to new
teachers, and get back to a more structured lifestyle.
It can also be a time of testing for their faith. As the
students listened to the reading from the letter to the
Ephesians they heard how to find strength in Christ
when challenges arise. They were instructed to be
“strong in the Lord and His mighty power,” and to,”
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take a
stand against the devil’s schemes.” With these words
they were given instructions on what to do in times
of temptation and resisting Satan’s lies.
Some common struggles for students are: not doing
homework correctly, leaving someone out, talking
bad about someone, not listening to a teacher, being
selfish, making fun of others, etc. They learned that
it is hard to always do the right thing but God has
given us a plan of attack –the armor of God!

FOND FAREWELL
Early this year we had to say goodbye to longtime
preschool aid and alumni parent, Mrs. Dawn Wall.
Dawn left to become a lead teacher at a day school in
Sandbridge. We wish Dawn good luck in her new
adventure!
WARM WELCOME
We welcome Mrs. Christina
Ramsey as our Spanish teacher for
Prek3-3rd grade. Chris’ boys attended
Star of the Sea for preschool and
Kindergarten but moved away for 2
years. She is thrilled to be back at
Star of the Sea with Brady in 1st
grade and Alex in 3rd.
New to our middle school faculty but long time parent,
Mrs. Diane Smith joins us as our
Science teacher. Her daughter,
Annabelle is a class of 2015 alumna
and her son, Tom Jr. will graduate
this year. Her husband Tommy is also
an alumnus. We are truly blessed to
have Mrs. Smith on our faculty.
This year we welcome Mrs. Courtney West as our
new Preschool 3 teacher. She came
to us after teaching in Newport
News for 5 years. She attended
UVA and William and Mary and
spends her time outside of school
with her husband and her dog and
cat. She is very happy to join the
Star of the Sea family and looks
forward to a great year.
ATHLETICS
Star Sports are off to a great start.
Cross Country ran at stellar speeds with our Jr. Cross
Country team challenging our Jr. High Cross Country
team! May May Hubbard (7th grade) finished in the
top 7 of our Championship meet completing the
season. This year our Basketball Program will include
Friday Night fun for the older divisions. Little Stars
Sports are back for another fun year to encourage our
youngest Stars to fall in love with Star of the Sea
Sports! We hope to see you all out on the field and
court supporting our Stars! Go STARS!
News Around Campus Star Connection
HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION (HSA)
Home & School started the year off raising $8000
through Yankee Candle and Cherrydale fundraisers.
For the third year in a row, the top student fundraiser
was 2nd grader Jake Long. Everyone loved the ice
cream party reward for those who participated. Our
Welcome Back picnic was held on Friday,
September 9 and our clothing drive over the
weekend of October 22-24 yielded 120 bags for
$480. Our next big event will be the Santa Sale on
December 16th.
CONGRATULATIONS Miss Laura Strain became Mrs. Chiong on October
14. Many of her students attended her wedding,
celebrated at Star of the Sea by our pastor, Fr. Steve
DeLeon.

DEVELOPMENT EVENTS
Our 12th annual golf tournament was postponed due
to the pre-Hurricane Matthew record setting rain.
We had a beautiful day on Friday October 21 and
raised over $10,000 Thank you to all the volunteers,
sponsors and players.
Our 5K was held on Sunday, November 6. It was a
stunningly beautiful day and we had 220
participants. Our top male runner was 14 year old
Logan Jackson from Yorktown (18:45). He could
not accept the prize to ensure there was no conflict
with future athletic eligibility. Our top female runner
was Jennifer Laffkas (24:05). Thank you to our
sponsors, participants and prize donors.
