Worship NotesParticipants: Dr. Loren Dickinson, retired communications professor of Walla Walla College for 38years and CEO of CommConsultants, presents today’s sermon and will lead in this afternoon’s seminar at 2:30p.m. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, hosts today’s worship and presents the children’s story. Jill Evans,KCMA English professor, and Randy Daniel, an elder and financial advisor, read today’s scripture that wasprepared by Dr. Dickinson. Elliot Smith, SVA Bible teacher and campus chaplain, presents the Prayers of thePeople, accompanies the hymn on his guitar and is interviewed along with Chris Casson, SVA 2nd gradeteacher, in our service groups interview.

Music: The organ music that begins and ends today’s worship service was written by Louis Vierne who wonthe position of organist at Notre Dame in 1898. The cathedral organ was in such bad repair that Viernelearned to compose in Braille so he could raise money to repair the organ.

is heard in an arrangement by Kelly Wayne Eytcheson, a member of our churchchoir. The piece is really three quartets that all sound together. All4One quartet includes: Tim Reynolds, first tenor sings the melody, accompanied by Kelly Eytcheson, second tenor, Russ Wetherall, baritone, and Steve Babienko, bass. The second quartet is played by a low brass quartet including Donald Huff,Jason Simon, Daniel Udrea, and Sam Pomales. The third quartet is sung by the Men’s Chorus. The pieceis based upon hymn (No. 530) and is dedicated to Ruel Lee Eytcheson, (1925-2008),Kelly’s dad. Horatio Spafford, who wrote the lyrics of the hymn, was a wealthy lawyer in Chicago at the timeof the Great Fire in 1871. Instead of reinvesting his money, Spafford spent much of his money in helping thehomeless, impoverished, and grief-stricken ruined by the fire. When his physician insisted that he and hisfamily take a vacation, they chose to go to England and help Dwight L. Moody with his evangelistic crusades.Spafford stayed behind in Chicago to complete some business, and his family left ahead of him. His fourdaughters were drowned in a shipwreck on the crossing. His wife survived and wired him the tragic news, “Ialone survived.” Spafford’s church in Chicago asked him to attend some other church because he seemed tobe filled with bad luck. In spite of this, Spafford still penned this hymn describing his faith, “..it is well with mysoul.”

(Hymn 338) was requested by today’s speaker, Dr. Dickinson. It is one of the great Fanny Crosbyhymns sung to the tune which was written by Pete Butler, a Baptist minister from Ada, Oklahoma.

(Hymn 538) was also requested by Dr. Dickinson. It is one of the greatWelsh hymns written by William Williams and sung to the tune Cwm Rhondda, which is a river in Wales.
