The Gospel of the PassionAccording to Mark 15: 1-39

Mark: As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation withthe elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. Pilate asked Him,

Pilate: Are you the King of the Jews?

Mark: Jesus answered him,

Jesus: You say so.

Mark: Then the chief priests accused Him of many things. Pilate asked Him again,

Pilate: Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.

Mark: But Jesus made no further reply so that Pilate was amazed. Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom

they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels whohad committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and beganto ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them,

Pilate: Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?

Mark: For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate spoke to them again,

Pilate: Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call King of the Jews?

Mark: They shouted back,

Crowd: Crucify Him! Crucify Him!

Mark: Pilate asked them,

Pilate: Why, what evil has He done?

Mark: But they shouted all the more,

Crowd: Crucify Him! Crucify Him!

Mark: So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Then the soldiers led Him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters); and they called together the whole court. And they clothed Him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on Him. And they began saluting Him,

All Men: Hail, King of the Jews!

Page 5: Complete Bulletin 04-07-12

Mark: They struck His head with a reed, spat upon Him, and knelt down in homage to Him. After mocking Him, they stripped Him of the purple cloak and put His own clothes on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him.

They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry Hiscross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. Then theybrought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). And they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. And theycrucified Him, and divided His clothes among them, casting lots to decidewhat each should take.

It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified Him. The inscriptionof the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews.’ And with Him theycrucified two bandits, one on His right and one on His left. Those who passedby derided Him, shaking their heads and saying,

Crowd: Ah! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days.Save Yourself, and come down from the cross!

Mark: In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking Him among themselves and saying,

All Women: He saved others; He cannot save Himself. Let the Messiah, theKing of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may seeand believe.

Mark: Those who were crucified with Him also taunted Him.

When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice,

Jesus: Eloi, lema sabachthani?

Mark: which means,

Jesus: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Mark: When some of the bystanders heard it, they said,

Crowd: Listen, He is calling for Elijah.

Mark: And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gaveit to Him to drink, saying,

Bystander: Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.

Mark: Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed His last. And the curtain of the templewas torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facingHim, saw that in this way He breathed His last, he said,

Centurian: Truly this man was God’s son.

Worship Notes:Participants: Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents today’s Easter sermon focusing on the Second Comingof Christ. Randy Daniel, a financial planner, hosts today’s service. Elliot Smith, our pastor for young adultsand the taskforce program, brings the Children’s Story. Robert Peach, head of the Christian Counseling Center, presents the Prayers of the People. Jill Evans, Kettering College English and literature teacher and dramacoach, reads today’s Scripture Lesson from the Gospel of John. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music,is the organist/choir director for today’s service. Oakwood Brass is the premier brass ensemble in our area andincludes Eric Knorr, Mic Richter, Caz Krusezewski, Ben Miles, Scott Wise, Andrew Duncan, FeliciaDellis and Renee Parcell. They are sponsored in memory of Roger McNeily.

The past week and particularly tomorrow, most of the Christians of the world remember Christ’s entrance intoJerusalem, the Last Supper, Christ being brought before Pilate and Herod, the Crucifixion, and His Resurrectionon Sunday. The scriptures report that Christ rested in the tomb on His Holy Sabbath. Today’s service is designedto be much as it was 2000 years ago as Christ’s followers spent Sabbath going over the events of the previousweek and wondering what tomorrow would bring.

Randy Daniel leads us in reading the Gospel of Mark, chapter 15, verses 1-39. Eric Beaven reads the part ofPilate. Elliot Smith, reads the words of Jesus. Dan Stevens reads the part of the Bystander. Ted Ramirezreads the part of the Centurion.

Music: As we gather for worship the sanctuary is dark and void of any decorations symbolizing life withoutChrist’s presence. The choir sings a setting of the Passion Chorale, (Hymn No. 156),

This hymn is possibly the best known of the German Chorales. The text was probably written byBernard of Clairvaux but set to music by Paul Gerhardt in 1656, using a tune everyone commonly knew.

is the only known composition of the German composer, Franz Joseph Schütky (1817 - 1893). is Movement III of Alexander Arutiunian’s Alexander Grigorevich Arutiunian

(1920 – 2012) was a Soviet and Armenian composer and pianist, professor at Yerevan State Conservatory, andknown in music circles, particularly for his trumpet concerto and the “Armenian Scenes.”

(Hymn 154) was written in 1707 by Isaac Watts. It was adapted to aGregorian Chant by American composer, Lowell Mason. It has become one of the 21st century’s best knownolder hymns.

was composed in 1990 by Randol Alan Bass, a 60-year-old Texas composer, pianist and bass soloist whodid his graduate work at the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. This wonderful seven-minutemini-cantata was given to the Kettering Church by Jane Diller Thurman.

(Hymn 166) was written by Charles Wesley and published in 1739. The hymnis a variation of an earlier hymn, , a 14th-century Latin hymn which had beentranslated into English and published in John Walsh’s in 1708. Our hymnal uses a combination ofthe original 11 stanzas. The actual composer of the tune is unknown. The accompaniment for brass and organwas composed by Cleveland, Ohio, organist/composer, Todd Wilson.

, from Handel’s “Messiah” is sung as the response to the message of hope in theresurrection. Tradition says that Handel endured criticism and abuse for composing the Yet, when theKing of England heard it, he was so moved that he stood to his feet. This was a rare occurrence for music andmusicians. In honor of the text, congregations have continued to stand for over 300 years when the Hallelujahchorus is sung.

from Charles-Marie Widor’s “Symphony V,” is perhaps the grandest and “showiest” of all the organliterature. It has been played for over 100 years at Easter services and is often referred to as the “EasterResurrection” piece. For this reason it is also played at memorial services and for many weddings.
