. Clive Wilson, Chaplain for KCMA, hosts today’s service. Enga Almeida, the associate director ofadmissions at Columbia Union College tells the children’s story and tells us about Columbia Union College.Prayers of the People will be given by Vicki Swetnam, administrative secretary, recruitment/marketing forSpring Valley Academy. Grant Wareham, is the organist for today’s service. Jerry Taylor, our minister ofworship and music, is on vacation in Florida this week. He will return on February 2.

Music Notes: As we gather for worship, the Spring Valley Academy Band, under the direction of GlennHawkins, plays by Steve Reineke. This piece was commissioned by the Evan High SchoolBand in Georgia, in memory of Holly Spivey, a high school student who perished in a 2002 house fire. Hollyhad many interests, but nothing quite impacted her like band music. Her big infatuation was with the stars.Steven Reineke captures the twinkling "music-box" effect with the mallet instruments and arpeggiatedascending chords that give this piece an upward feel, as if looking toward heaven.

(Hymn No. 1) is the great German hymn by Joachim Neander. The tune, translates and is named for the opening words of this hymn.

was written by Thomas Dorsey in Chicago, Illinois after his wife and child died. Dorsey sangthe song for his friend, gospel singer, Theodore Frye, and Frye’s choir sang it the next Sunday at the EbenezerBaptist Church.

was composed by Alfred Reed. He was one of America's most prolific and frequentlyperformed band arrangers and composers, with over 200 of his pieces published for wind ensemble.

(Hymn 583) was written by Cyril Argentine Alington in 1950. It is about buildingup the church of God on the foundation laid by Jesus Christ. The tune, was composed by theEnglish organist, Cyril Taylor in 1937.

“The Who, How, When, and Why of Worship”Third message in series: :

I. Our Mission of Hope

II. Worship and our Mission (Revelation 14:7) "He said in a loud voice, 'Fear God and give Him glory, because thehour of His judgment has come. Worship Him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and thesprings of water.'"

A. Who to worship? Technology is the enemy of reverence. Deliberately or inadvertently, technology puts out sacred fires because technology is the celebration of what man can do. In the Bible, idol-worship is the celebration of the man-made as the highest achievement in the world. What is wrong with idol-worship, with worshiping human achievements as if they were the ultimate accomplishment, is not just that it is disloyal or offensive to God. The sin of idol-worship is that it is futile. Because it is really an indirect way of worshiping ourselves, it can never help us grow, as the worship of a God beyond ourselves can help us grow. As a result, we find life flat and uninspiring, and don't realize why.

B. How to worship?

C. When to worship? The true Sabbath, given to man as a memorial of creation, has been taken from its rightful place as a sacred command of God, and, instead, a false sabbath has been exalted and worshiped. Living, testing principles have been lost, as stars are said to become extinct in the firmament of heaven. But a message, the third angel's message, has come to the world, to exalt the truth to its right position, that it may stand fast as God's testing truth for these last days. God's requirements are to be given to the world in all their original freshness and power.

Source: Michael Card, "Seventh Sunrise" from the album , Discovery Music House, 2006.

D. Why worship? (Hebrews 12:28, NIV) "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God."

2008 Year-End Financial Update

We have experienced again the provision of God evidenced in the ways He financiallyblesses this church. As you know we had some significant financial challenges during 2008.Here is where we stand at year-end:

Tithe increased 11% over 2007 giving levels. World Missions increased by 7.5% compared to 2007. Combined Budget (comprised of our church’s contribution to Spring Valley Academy and general church ministries) ended with a deficit of only

$75,000, a great blessing considering that the need in October 2008 totaled over $445,000. Of the Combined Budget deficit, nearly $40,000 relates to the 2007 budget

short fall with which we began our 2008 stewardship. We have so much for which to be grateful. Our church members are faithful and generousin giving to the local church. Thank you! What next? In years past Kettering Church’s small year-end operational deficits havebeen met by using investment income from church endowment funds. With the decline infinancial markets, we had no investment income in 2008 to apply to the deficit. The church finance committee and board believe the opportunity to raise the remaining$75,000 is an option preferable to “balancing the budget” by allocating limited funds to ourexisting ministries for 2009.During the months of February and March we ask you to prayerfully consider how we,together, may provide an additional contribution to “Combined Budget-2008.” We arecreating an additional account to receive gifts for this special purpose. This is anopportunity to erase, what amounts to, budget deficits for 2007 2008 – to put thesepermanently behind us, and to start 2009 with exciting prospects for service and growth.Members of our church finance committee, together with our pastoral staff, will review thedraft 2009 budget closely to see whether and where to reshape our budget to 2007 levels. We see this as an important stewardship option to consider because the investment incomeprobably will not be available as the cushion we have used for too long.March 28 is our goal date for raising the $75,000 for “Combined Budget-2008.” Whetheryou regularly give or perhaps are a first-time giver at the Kettering Church, please considerhow you can help bring sustained growth and progress to the wonderful ministryopportunities that God is presenting to us every week.

Gratefully,

Church Finance CommitteeKettering Adventist Church Board
