• Comparison and contrast essays can be arranged in one of two ways: point-by-point or block comparison and/or contrast.
• In a point-by-point structure, each point of similarity or difference between two items is compared or contrasted.
• In a block structure, entire paragraphs are devoted to each item and include all the points of comparison or contrast for that item.
• Remember to stick to one point throughout the essay. Do not stray from your thesis. Each paragraph should flow smoothly from one to the next.

• Be sure to begin your essay with a clear introductory paragraph, which ends in a clear and relevant thesis statement (statement of purpose for the essay).
• Follow this with body paragraphs in which you expand upon your thesis statement.
• End with a strong concluding paragraphs.• Proofread your essay at least three times,
looking for organization, mechanical errors, and all elements of your particular assignment.

• Many topics lend themselves to this type of organization.
• Think of two topics with similarities, differences, or both.
• Some examples of items that lend themselves to comparison and/or contrast are men and women, the past versus the present, and good versus evil.
• Your choice of topic will be dictated by your assignment.

your essay along smoothly.
• Some transitions that work for comparison and contrast essays are: similarly, on the other hand, however, likewise.
