ARegular quality checks of Weidmüller processing tools and

the assemblies made with them guarantee optimum safety.

In order to keep it that way and to prevent possible machine

stoppages during production, regular maintenance and precise

tool calibration is simply indispensable.

In order to receive a certified tool, customers have the option

of either returning an existing Weidmüller tool for re-certification,

or of purchasing a certified Weidmüller tool on submitting a

new order.

Certification includes:

• Conductor extraction force testing according to relevant

DIN regulations

• Issue of a test certificate with corresponding identification

number and allocated customer number

• Recommendation for the next certification date; special

testing intervals available on request

B

A large number of cables and conductors in many different

types and designs are used to connect electrical and electronic

components. The cables and wires must be accurately prepared

for the various types of connection. The quality of the cutting

process is therefore of critical importance.

Weidmüller is a specialist in the cutting of copper or aluminium

cables. The product selection ranges from cutting tools for

small cross-sections (with direct transmission of force) to cutting

tools for large diameters. Mechanical efficiency together with the

special cutting pattern reduces the manual force required to a

minimum.

Weidmüller’s wide range of cutting tools fulfils all the criteria for

professional cable preparation. The demands Weidmüller makes

of its products can be summarised simply: a smooth, straight

cut without deforming the conductor. Users profit directly from

this philosophy, whilst maintaining ease of use.

At Weidmüller the term “cutting” refers to the severing of

cables, wires and conductors of copper or aluminium with a

tool appropriate for the application.

The requirement for all cutting tools is to perform a smooth,

straight cut without deforming the conductor.

According to DIN 8588, experts differentiate between shear

cutting, wedge-action cutting, tearing and breaking.

Shear cutting is employed particularly in the cutting of cables,

wires and conductors. Cutting tools with cross blades should

perform an oblique cut and operate without play.

Movement of the blades

We differentiate between two basic cutting processes:

• Push cut

• Draw cut

In push cut, the cutting movement is perpendicular between

tool and workpiece. In draw cut, the cutting movement is

oblique to the tool.

Introduction

The essential quality characteristics for professional cutting

tools are a cutting edge shape which is suited to, and opti-

mised for, the corresponding application, so that the manual

forces required for cutting remain low. This allows single-

handed operation.

Tools by Weidmüller comply with all requirements imposed on

professional cutting tools.

Position of the blades

In position 1 the blades act directly and over the whole length,

i.e. considerable force is required.

In position 2, the blades cross as in a pair of scissors, the cut is

therefore “offset” and requires less force.

Introduction

After a conductor has been cut it is then prepared for the next

step or for crimping. For this purpose, a specific length of the

conductor insulation has to be removed, while preventing dam-

age to the conductor. The length of the conductor insulation to

be removed depends on the terminal clamping point or the

crimp to be processed. Professional stripping tools guarantee

perfect results due to precise adjustment of the tool to the

corresponding insulation and the conductor cross-section.

Precision tools by Weidmüller guarantee that the user will

always obtain consistent, reliable stripping results.

Introduction

“Stripping” means the cutting and removal of the insulation.

The following must be ensured in performing this task:

The stripping dimension must be observed and neither the

conductor nor the remaining insulation must be damaged.

DIN IEC 60352 part 2 contains references to stripping faults

which must be avoided:

To avoid these faults, it is important that the stripping tool is

suited to the insulation and to the cross-section range of the

conductor.

Do not use work knives or penknives because the stripping

quality when using such tools depends entirely on the manual

dexterity of the user. The quality is not consistent, even when

the user is highly skilled.

Preference should be given to hand-operated tools that adjust

automatically to the corresponding cross-section of the

conductor. They do not damage to the conductor during

stripping and avoid the faults shown on the left.

stripax® stripping tools guarantee a consistent stripping result

which complies with DIN regulations. The tools are rated

for standard dimension PVC insulation. Any PVC insulation

thicknesses deviating from normal can be set manually. The

conductor stopper and integrated wire cutter allow highly

versatile use of the tools.

Special insulation types such as Teflon, Silicone and Kapton

require special stripping tools. These tools strip the conductor

with punch blades.

Stripping is the name given to the cutting and removal of

conductor insulation. When carrying out this task it must be

guaranteed that the appropriate length of insulation is removed

and that neither the conductor nor the remaining insulation

are damaged in any way. DIN IEC 352 part 2 (formerly

DIN IEC 48/290) contains details of the stripping faults to avoid.

Special stripping units – the answer to diverse stripping tasks

The multi-stripax® tool – distinguished by its robust design – was developed to handle

all the stripping tasks met with in practice. Thanks to the interchangeable stripping

units, a special solution can be found for every challenge in the marketplace.

The specially shaped stripping blades guarantee perfect stripping results. The guide

plates ensure the correct positioning of the wire and therefore prevent damage to the

remaining wire. The clamping jaws hold the conductor with just the right force during

the stripping operation and are matched to the specific situation. This flexibility within

the variables that affect the result of the stripping operation turns the multi-stripax®

tool into a universal troubleshooter.

Introduction

After stripping, appropriate contacts or wire end ferrules can

be crimped to the cable end.

Crimping produces a reliable connection between conductor

and contact, and has more or less completely replaced

soldering.

Crimping describes the production of a uniform, non-

detachable connection between conductor and connecting

element. This should be achieved exclusively by the use of a

high-quality precision tool. The result is a safe, reliable

connection in both electrical and mechanical terms.

Crimping

Weidmüller offers a wide product range of mechanical crimping

tools.

An integral ratchet mechanism with disengaging option

guarantees optimum processing quality. Crimp connections

produced with Weidmüller tools comply with international

standards and specifications.

Introduction

Faulty crimping connections due to incorrect combinationof cable and wire end ferruleIt is not possible for a tool to function reliably with every combi-

nation of conductor and crimping material.

It is possible that the standard requirements for the crimped

product can’t be achieved, although taken on their own, both

conductor and crimping material comply with the correspon-

ding standard. The individual production tolerances of conduc-

tor and crimping material do not allow every conductor to be

combined with every contact.

The combination of conductors, crimping material and crimping

tool must be coordinated: this procedure is all the more difficult

given the large number of products on the market.

This means that the material must be defined and the crimping

result tested, ensuring that the test, and later on the tool, satisfy

the same conditions.

Crimping of wire end ferrulesOptimum crimp of different cross-sections as an example

Examples for the visual inspection of a crimp connection with

manual and automatic crimping tools by Weidmüller:

The conductor insulation must be pushed into the plastic collar.

The ferrule sleeve must be completely filled by the conductor.

Depending on the cross-section, the conductor should protrude

approx. 0 … 0.5 mm from the ferrule sleeve.

Introduction – Electric screwdrivers

Crimped conductors can be fastened in their corresponding

connecting spaces either by the direct plug-in technique or

by means of screws.

Electric screwdrivers

Weidmüller screwdrivers are ideal one-hand tools due to their

ergonomic design. They guarantee fatigue-free working in any

installation direction. They also have an automatic torque limit

and high repetition accuracy.

Weidmüller bits

The Weidmüller bits are standard bits with high quality, wide

range and top-rate performance. Weidmüller uses processor-

controlled hardening processes to guarantee consistently high

The high-grade material enables torques far above those

stipulated in the relevant DIN standards:

Screwty® for M8 / M12

The perfect tool for all situations

Screwty® is the ideal, universal tool for tightening and releasing cable glands

on all common sensor and actuator cables. The Screwty® can also reach

those round plug connectors normally considered inaccessible. No great

strength is required – simply turn the tool to tighten or release the plug

connector as required.

The Screwty® also fits the majority (more than 90%) of lines and plug

connectors of other suppliers and is therefore a unique tool useful

throughout the world. The Screwty® consists of a handle with a

conventional 1/4 inch fitting. This means it can be used for all sizes:

for M12 and M8 round plug connectors, and the M12F and M8F types,

also for plugs and sockets on custom cables.

The Screwty® is suitable for the following round plug connectors:

An adjustable torque fitting is also available for the Screwty® – for

CCM

The CCM microprocessor-controlled automatic cutter cuts to length ribbon

cables, round cables, insulating conduits and tubes. Its high repeat accuracy

is achieved using a precision AC servodrive. The dimensional accuracy can,

for particular requirements, be optimised by means of length correction.

Using a special subprogram, it is simplicity itself for customers to adapt the

program interface to their own company-specific requirements. The pressure

on the cable from the drive can be adjusted by the built-in pressure regulator

that controls the pneumatic opening.

Software is available that allows cutting jobs to be managed, documented

and transferred. The CCM can be used wherever stationary preparation of

medium and large cable series is required. It comes with handles for easy

relocation.
