The team at Waitomo Caves first became

aware of the cave lighting expertise

Weidmüller provides during a presentation

by Weidmüller at one of the ACKMA

(Australasian Cave and Kast Management

Association) conferences a few years ago.

The award winning Jenolan Caves a

few hours west of Sydney is one of the

big success stories for Weidmüller LED

Lighting Design Specialist David Head

with three caves now 100% illuminated

with the Weidmüller LED fittings.

Prior to the advent of LED cave lighting

most commercial caves worldwide utilised

inefficient incandescent lighting which

emit a dull yellow cast giving a visual

experiencethatisfarbelowwhatcannow

be achieved with LED lights.

90% of the output of an incandescent

globe is infrared radiation (heat) and these

low efficiency lights cause damage to the

cave micro habitat through the formation

of Lampenflora which includes mosses,

greenalgaeandinextremecasesferns.

LED lighting reduces power consumption

by up to 90% and has a life expectancy

of up to 50,000 hours compared to 1000

to 2000 hours for incandescent lights.

They also have an ideal operating voltage

(typically 24VDC) which means a simple

battery backup system can be installed for

power outage purposes.

The historic Aranui Cave was discovered

back in1910by localmanRurukuAranui

whilstonapighuntingexpeditionandhas

been one of Waitomo’s attractions ever

since.

Environmental Officer for Aranui and

Ruakuri caves Travis Cross along with

External Consultant John Ash invited the

Weidmüller team and local distributer,

Cuthbert Stewart Ltd (CSL), to visit and

advise on the best Weidmüller LED options

for the Aranui Cave.

The majority of the installation utilised

the small 200 lumen output Rockstar

fitting to highlight formations and

decorations and the Medium 700

lumen output Enviromini unit for

general lighting for all formations. Both

fittings offer a choice of beam angles

and colour outputs ranging from cool

white through to neutral and warm

options as well as internal ramp up and

ramp down modes.

The 7000 lumen Visi Bright Floodlight

was chosen to illuminate one of the

larger chambers. This light has been

used predominantly in the Rolling Stock

Industry in Australia for locomotive

headlights and provides a stunning

solution for large cave areas.

The lighting and control system

install was undertaken by John Deere

Electrical Te Kuiti and provides the

Cave Guides with control switching

throughout the caves so that areas and

individual formations can be switched

in and out as required. The original AC

lighting reticulation system was 110

VAC and Interfacing this with the 24

VDC requirements of the Weidmüller

LEDs provided some challenges

including ensuring that both AC and

DC voltage levels remained constant

throughout.

A third project install in the Aranui

Caves will be undertaken during 2014

and both the CSL and Weidmüller teams

are again looking forward to being part

of such an innovative application of

the technology. We encourage all of

Shane joined the CSL team late last year as a

Sales Engineer based in Auckland . Nelson born

Shane began his working life with the Nelson

City Council where he completed his electrical

apprenticeship. Work as an electrician followed

at Newcombe Electric and then a stint in his

own business.

A love of travel (and cars) saw Shane take up the

position of Crew Chief on a Midget Speedway

in Central California. Travel continued to be a

passion with trips to many places including the

Mayan Pyramids of the Yucatan.

Following his return to NZ Shane worked in

both electrical wholesale and switchboard

building before leaving the mainland to join

CSL. Shane says ”Coming to work at CSL is a
