Our Missions What is PRISM?

Through PRISM, graduate students in the TCBES Program at UH Hilo are

working with Teachers to adapt and implement

hands-on science curricula in K-12 classrooms.

Curricula are being adapted to suit Hawaii’s unique

natural and cultural environments, meet student

content and performance standards, and enhance student learning through

the use of multiple instructional and

assessment strategies.

“I was extremely inspired by these students’ new found enthusiasm for

science. Integrating examples specific to Hawaii into the curriculum

allowed these students to have a greater appreciation for their unique island. Understanding that people learn differently will allow me to

diversify how I communicate science to the public.”

Graduate Student Fellow

“Participating in PRISM was an extremely positive experience. My

students and I learned so much about science and the inquiry-based learning process. My students

retained that knowledge and carried it with them throughout the year!”

Second Grade Teacher

“I learned more about science than ever before and had fun doing it. We played games, used computers, and

went on field trips to learn instead of using textbooks. Now I love

science!” Student

To improve the scientific literacy and skills of Hawaii’s

K-12 students to better prepare them for the

challenges of the 21st Century workplace

To develop a community of practice in science education involving UH Hilo’s Education and TCBES Programs and the Hawaii Island Department of

Education
