Ongerup Primary School – What are we up to now!

Greetings all!

National Tree Planting Day

On Monday the 31st of July the students thoroughly enjoyed celebrating National Tree Planting Day

with the much valued support and assistance from Pallinup Land Care. Andrea and Sally supplied us

with some wonderful native shrubs, small trees and ground covers. Students focused their attention

on planting around the perimeter of our school oval. Many thanks to Fred Duncan and Graham

Savage who braved the cold to come and assist students breaking up the concrete like clay soil, and

Mrs Dewar for her photography on the day.

Surprise Visit from Sam Goodall - Australian Ninja Warrior finalist

Students were taken by surprise yesterday when one of their local heroes - Sam Goodall came to

visit the school. Sam generously gave up his time to spend the day visiting local schools to talk

about his adventure in the first Australian Ninja Warrior series. He also gave students an

inspirational inside story of the event and talked about his preparation for the next series. We

were all very impressed with Sam’s achievements, particularly his biggest fan our School Chaplain

Mr Goodall Senior! Many thanks Sam, we’ll all be willing you on in the next series.

Book Fair Tuesday 15th of August

As usual our Student Council have been busily planning and looking forward to Book Fair this year.

Parents and carers, there is no escape! The lure of book prizes has our Joeys and

Boomers eagerly planning marvellous costumes to impress our judges. This year’s Book Fair raises

the bar. The programme starts on Tuesday morning, and all parents, carers friends and relatives

are invited to attend:

9:00am - The highlight, the annual Book Fair Parade in the School Library.

9:30am - Short story reading. This is the chance for parents, friends or staff to read their

favourite short story to our enthusiastic participants.

10:00am - Guests can join student teams for our Book Fair Quiz. Rumour has it that the Wolf in the

Three Little Pigs only wanted to borrow a cup of sugar! Do you know your short story facts?

Another highlight of Book Fair is the Colouring Competition. I suspect Mrs Thompson will have her

work cut out judging this year. After all the fun guests are invited to join us for a cuppa and a well-

earned bickie. Many thanks to Mrs Thompson for the great effort that she contributes to our

Literacy programme each year with the organisation of this event.

This year as a special follow up to Book Fair - our Boom-

er class will be meeting celebrated author Dianne

Wolfer as the Author in Residence at Gnowangerup

Library on Friday 25th of August.

School Development Day August 18th

Parents and carers please remember that Friday the

18th is a pupil free day for Staff Development.

North Stirling's Pallinup Natural Resources & Ongerup Community Development Group Busy Bee in Ongerup.

A great morning in Ongerup spent tackling weeds. We came out with our shovels, pitchforks and spray packs ready to

tackle some pesky weeds that have been increasing in numbers around the town. Our main target was Gazania's but we also tackled Marshmallow, Fleabane, Radish and Capeweed to name a few. We enjoyed some lively discussions about weeds, what is considered a weed and a few of us were a little sad to discover they were also lovingly growing some weeds in their gardens at home. Sandy also brought along some freshly picked weeds for everyone to identify and the NSPNR girls Andrea & Ellie handed out some weed guides as a handy fu-ture reference for identifying weeds and eve-ryone participated in a survey to help NSPNR find out about what knowledge everyone in our community has on weeds, how to tackle them and why they have become a problem. We also all enjoyed hot coffee & cake from the Yongergnow cafe. Thanks everyone for coming! This morning is part of a larger weeds project running in the area funded by State NRM.
