REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR

Many years ago I completed an advanced degree in Latin American studies from Georgetown University. One of the countries that I focused on was Cuba. Because of the US embargo to Cuba I was unable to visit there. I did a very intense study of economic planning in Cuba. Using the Soviet model, it has been a disaster.

Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis, after several visits to Cuba, have played a great role in opening up the island to the rest of the world. Pope Francis played the key role in reestablishing diplomatic relationships between Cuba and the US.

President Obama was the first American President to visit Cuba, and to the consternation of the Castro brothers, he spoke over their heads, and urged the young people to make a new reality, to forge a new future for their country.

I finally visited Cuba last year, it is filled with young people who want a better future. Fidel Castro is dead, his broth-er Raul is stepping down as the nation’s President. The Castro era is over. As I walked around Old Havana, I fell in love with its old cathedral, one of the oldest in the hemisphere. Columbus was buried there for a long time.

Let us pray that the Church May thrive in Cuba as the new generation builds a better future.

Many Blessings, Fr. Jack

Gaudete et Exaultate

In Pope Francis’ newly-released Gaudete et Exsultate, he offers a powerful magisterial reflection on the Council’s “universal call to holiness”: Gaudete et Exsultate (GE) is an apostolic exhortation, a type of doc-ument that ranks above everyday papal homilies and speeches. In it, Pope Francis reflects on teachings of the Jesus.

“Rejoice and be glad” (Mt 5:12), Jesus tells those persecuted or humiliated for his sake. The Lord asks everything of us, and in return he offers us true life, the happiness for which we were created. He wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence. (§1)

Beatitudes (n.63): Nothing is more enlightening than turning to Jesus’ words and seeing his way of teaching the truth. Jesus explained with great simplicity what it means to be holy when he gave us the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are like a Christian’s identity card.

Mary (n.176): I would like these reflections to be crowned by Mary, because she lived the Beatitudes of Jesus as none other. She is that woman who rejoiced in the presence of God, who treasured everything in her heart, and who let herself be pierced by the sword. Mary is the saint among the saints, blessed above all others. She teaches us the way of holiness and she walks ever at our side. […] Our converse with her consoles, frees and sanctifies us.

The Little White Book

As we celebrate the Easter Season, you are invited to take home a copy of The Little White Book that features 6 minute reflections on the Acts of the Apostles.

These reflections will allow us to reflect upon the post resurrection days impact on the apostles and on our own lives. You will find the Little White Book on the cre-denza.

Living Catholic in the 808 Fourth Sunday of Easter

Jesus Has Gone Begore Us Fr. William Kunisch . Pastor

Resurrection of the Lord Parish Holy Cross Parish Waipio, Oahu

There are times in our lives when we don’t like to go first. I think children, on their first day of school, are more comfortable if they know a big brother or big sister is al-ready at the school. Patients are uncertain when their doctor recommends they try an experimental medication. Most like to take something "tried and true" where the side effects and efficacy are known.

In Mark's Easter Gospel, the angel instructs the women to tell the disciples that the risen Jesus was going before them to Galilee. Galilee was home - base for the disci-ples, where the Lord first called them. I imagine the disci-ples were still reeling from the events of the past week. But Jesus had always gone before his disciples. In life, he went before them showing them what it means to live an authentic life in total obedience to the Father. In death, he went before his disciples. The Nicene Creed reminds us that Jesus "suffered death" and was buried. He gave his disciples an example of how to place their lives entirely and ultimately in the Father's hands. And now, Jesus goes before them to new and eternal life.

Think of any place or anything in your future that makes you fearful, anxious, confused, or unsettled. Know that Jesus has gone before you and is already there with his love and grace.

Ministers Needed

With the end of the school year coming up, students will be returning to their homes and many parishioners will be planning vacation trips. We are looking at a de-crease in the number of liturgical ministers during this time.

We are called to celebrate the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Being a liturgical minister is a wonder-ful way to welcome the stranger and spiritually feed the community as a Greeter, Lector, or Eucharistic Minister. Greeters, to welcome the community, Lectors, to pro-claim the scripture, and Eucharistic Ministers, to help serve at the reception of the blessed sacrament. A litur-gical minister is assigned to the Mass he or she most often attends and is usually assigned once a month.

Thank you to those who signed up to create the floral arrangements that enhance our liturgical events. We are still in need of someone to handle April, June, July, and August. The Center will reimburse up to $40 a week for the cost of flowers.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a liturgical minis-ter at the Mass that they attend, please contact Carol Kotsubo at [email protected] or leave your contact information with Chris Malano. Thank you.

Celebrate Newman Center’s 35th Anniversary

As we continue to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the dedication of the Newman Center Chapel, we are collecting people’s thoughts about the role of Newman in their lives.

Questions for April: 1) Pretend, for a moment, that you have awakened from a

5-year sleep, and the spirit of Newman community is what you always dreamed it would be. What does it look like?

2) What is different now? What might you have done to contribute to this renewal?

Encourage others to share their story. Thank you!
