    2010-2011 ACT Government Seniors Grants andSponsorship Program

    Call or applications

    The ACT Government Seniors Grants and Sponsorship Program provides funding to community-based organisations for projects and activities that promote positive ageing in the ACT.

    The primary aim o the program is to support older Canberrans to maintain their wellbeingand to remain active in their community.

    A total o $100,000 will be available through the 2010-2011 Seniors Grants andSponsorship Program, with a maximum o $15,000 available or each approved project.

    The ACT Of ce or Ageing is inviting applications or projects and events or a period o12 months. Sponsorships o up to two years are available or recurrent events.

    Application packages are available rom the ACT Of ce or Ageing on 6205 5365 atwww.grants.act.gov.au or by emailing [email protected]

    The Of ce or Ageing will conduct public inormation sessions beore the c losing date.Details are in the Application Guidelines, or call 6205 5365.

    Applications close at 5.00pm on Monday 23 August 2010.

    Common misconceptions about the infuenza vaccineThere are a number o common misconceptions or myths about inuenza (u) vaccination.These include the ollowing.

    MYTH: The fu vaccine gives me the fu

    Some recent research indicates that about 20% o the population believe this myth. Theact is that the u vaccine is not a live vaccine and cannot give you the u virus. Mild ulike symptoms that may occur ater immunisation are signs that your body is mounting animmune response which provides protection rom the u virus.

    MYTH: I am healthy so I dont need to be vaccinated

    Healthy people may still become quite ill rom a u inection and will oten need severaldays o work or school. Some healthy people, such as pregnant women and young peoplehave been especially aected by swine u. Getting immunised will also help protectpeople in the community who are vulnerable, such as the very young and the elderly.

    It is important to be vaccinated now as the u season is upon us and it can take up to twoweeks to gain ull protection.

    Bus Tours o the National Arboretum Canberra

    Murrays Coaches have kindly sponsored bus tours o the Arboretum or the second Sundayo each month, with the next tour scheduled orSunday 11 July 2010. The Friends o theArboretum will provide a guide or each tour. Places are limited so bookings are essential.Contact Jocelyn on 0406 376 711 or on [email protected] to book your seats.The tour is ree, but a gold coin donation would be welcomed to support the work o theFriendsAssociation. Please meet at the bus stop outside the Legislative Assembly, CivicSquare at 11.45 am or a 12 noon departure. The bus will return to Civic Square at 1.30pm.

    Canberras new land and property website opens orbusiness

    Wanting to hire a government property? Find out about uture residential, industrial,commercial or community land releases in Canberra? Visit the National Arbotretum?

    A new website www.laps.act.gov.au has been launched by the Department o Landand Property Services and it includes inormation about these and other issues such asstrategic projects, property management, Construction Snapshot and aordable housing

    Visitors to www.laps.act.gov.au can nd out more about the 17,000 dwelling sitescoming to market over the next our years, or about Government properties such as the

    reurbished Albert Hall or lease and hire.

    The Department o Land and Property Services was established in December to betteralign and coordinate land release, land development and property management.

    Reserves re-open to publicThe ACT Government wishes to advise that Callum Brae Nature Reserve, Crace NatureReserve, Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve, Jerrabomberra West Nature Reserve, Kama NatureReserve, Mount Painter Nature Reserve, Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve and unleasedterritory land adjacent to Kama Nature Reserve re-open to the public today.

    The sites had been closed since 19 June 2010 to allow or a controlled cull oover-abundant kangaroos to take place.

    Volunteer dog walkers

    Would you like to get some exercise and help out a worthy cause at the same time?

    Domestic Animal Services is calling or extra volunteers to walk the dogs kept at theirshelter in Mugga Lane, Symonston. This provides the dogs with much needed exercise,socialisation and training which improves their chances o nding a lie-long home.

    There are usually about ve dogs that come in each day with up to 50 at the shelter at anygiven time and it is important they are given regular exercise.

    Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer dog walker should contact Domestic AnimalServices on 6207 2424 and ask or Lee to arrange a time to attend an introduction brie onthe volunteer program.

    Pay parking ee increases

    Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) wish to advise the community that rom

    5 July 2010 new parking ees will be introduced in territory-owned car parks. The eeincreases will range rom $0.10 to $1.50 per day depending on location.

    Fee increases:

    On-street parking in Kingston: $0.10 All Day parking (Zone A in City): $1.50

    Short-stay (2-hour) ticketing: $0.30 All Day parking (Zone B in City): $1.00

    Short-stay (4-hour) ticketing All Day parking (Manuka): $1.00(City, town centres and Kingston/Manuka): $1.00 Other town centres: $1.00

    Changed public parking arrangements at CanberraHospital

    To minimise disruption to patients and visitors during redevelopment at CanberraHospital, temporary parking arrangements will be in place rom Saturday 10 July 2010until the new multi-storey car park is completed and ully operational in early 2011. Somelower oors o the new car park are expected to be operational by the end o 2010.

    Public parking spaces

    The main public parking will be available in the Yamba Drive south car park. The car parkis well lit and within easy walking distance o the hospital.

    Access to the car park is rom a let hand slip lane while travelling north on Yamba Drive.Drivers approaching the hospital rom the east and west on Hindmarsh Drive should turn

    north onto Yamba Drive. Drivers approaching rom the north will be directed around thecampus to the Hindmarsh Drive/Yamba Drive intersection.

    Smaller short-stay one hour car parks and pick-up/set down areas remain near to themain hospital buildings.

    Disability parking spaces

    The main three hour disability parking will remain beneath the Diagnostics andTreatment building (Bldg 12) which is close to the heart o the hospital.

    Three hour and all day disability spaces are also available in the car park behind theNational Capital Private Hospital.

    Disability spaces are also located near the entrance to main hospital buildings.

    Motorcycle parking spaces

    Motorcycle parking will remain beneath the Diagnostics and Treatment building(Bldg 12).

    Shuttle bus

    A shuttle bus service is available Monday to Friday to assist patients and visitors to androm their vehicles. Pick-up points are clearly signposted and located throughout thecampus.
