Awarded Life Sciences UTC

by Department Of Education North Liverpool Academy Trust is delighted to announce that they have been given approval to set up a University Technical College specialising in Life Sciences in the heart of the Liverpool City Region.

Maritime Lodge, Thirlemere Court and Beaconsfield Community Centre digital story-telling adventures.

The digital story-telling revolution comes to Breckfield via BNENC‟s Positive Communities Project in Partnership with

Tenantspin, FACT and Arena Housings long-term community media project,

The project helps support people from right across Breckfield and Anfield to make their

mark creatively through digital technology, film and photography.

BNENC invited Tenantspin to work with their Be-Friending groups in Breckfield to come up with story-telling classes focusing

on the lives of local residents giving them a new and interesting way to record their memories for themselves, their families and

future generations. The result is a collection of digital stories

reflecting the breadth of knowledge and experience amongst Breckfield‟s older residents, of working lives, evacuation,

wartime experiences and memories growing up.

*“There was running hot water and a front and back garden – this really pleased my mother…” *„The lady had me open up the shop and close the shop. I worked all week and half a day on a Saturday for £2. My mum rang her up and said: I don‟t mind any child of mine working but I object to slave labour so that was that!‟

Regeneration

results revealed

The Parks is up and running, the first phase of The Parks comprises of 72 properties, 34 of which are Arena

homes for rent, and 38 properties being sold by Keepmoat. With The Parks comes some new street names

for our area; Kemp Avenue, Isla Square, Burnet Road, Reedmace Road and Tilia Road.

All of the new street names are derived from indigenous species of plant found in Stanley Park. Arena Housing has 9

properties tenanted at present, with a further 25 to be let between now and mid 2012.

Arena‟s first tenant took up residency in their new home in July 2011; home owners are moving in along side Arena

tenants, which has created a vibrant and cohesive start to this exciting new

development. Arena have relocated clearance cases from Anfield/Breckfield to The Parks this has enabled friends,

neighbours, and families to remain to-gether on this first Phase. The development is one of only a small

number left in the country where buyers can still take advantage of the government backed HomeBuy Direct

initiative. Using the scheme, first time buyers can take advantage of a 30% equity loan to help them get on the

housing ladder; meaning they only have to finance 70% of the cost. This means the Rest can be secured by

initially financing just £93,097, with no interest on the loan for the first five

years. Full terms and conditions are available from Keepmoat Homes on request. Tom Merrills, Partnership Project Manager with Keepmoat Homes, said: “This project has required a

huge amount of work and commitment from everyone involved, so we‟re delighted to see the fruits of every-

one‟s labour”.

Recruitment Drive

We are currently looking for young people between the ages of

12 (must be in year 8) to 18 year old who are looking to do something with their evenings and weekends that is

progressive as well as challenging. During the last 12 months we have taken part in number of events including

getting the Freedom of the City of Liverpool which was bestowed upon the

Army Cadets to celebrate 150 years since we were formed in London by a social worker Octavia Hill, who saw the benefits

of military training for young people. Other events have seen this unit take

part in the Remembrance Parade at

St Georges Hall and a candle service for

Alder Hey Hospital at the Anglican

Cathedral which we have taken part in

for nearly 5 years. Each year we go away

for 4 weekends training at Altcar Training

Camp near Formby where cadets get

instruction in all sorts of subjects based

on military training including first aid,

fieldcraft, campcraft, drill just to mention

few. We have not long come back from

the Annual Army Cadet Camp which lasts

LFC Action for Health and it‟s Community Health

Partners that included Breckfield HIM Project, The Cancer Collaborative and others have had a very

hectic few months especially with their programmes and events being delivered as part of Blue September month.

BLUE SEPTEMBER is a nationwide awareness and fundraising initiative about all the cancers that affect men – not just prostate and testicular cancer, but also

bowel, lung, liver and other cancers. The campaign aims to raise funds for more work by the Men‟s Health Forum charity to raise men's awareness of

cancer and help them to reduce the risk of developing and dying from cancer by making better lifestyle choices and seeking help sooner rather than later.

Care Services Minister Paul Burstow MP said 'Preventing cancer and diagnosing cancer earlier is one

of our key priorities in aiming to achieve cancer outcomes that are amongst the best in the world. Blue September is a great way of encouraging men and

their families to adopt healthier lifestyles and know the signs and symptoms of cancer, and I wish the Men‟s

Health Forum the best of luck with their campaign. I am delighted to support Blue September.'

Professor Sir Mike Richards CBE, National director for cancer 'Men are at higher risk of developing a wide range of

cancers than women. We need to encourage men to lead healthier lifestyles, to take up bowel screening when invited, and to present earlier when they have

symptoms that could be due to cancer. Earlier diagnosis can undoubtedly save lives. I strongly support Blue September.'

LFC Action for Health funded and took part in a 45 mile Cycle ride from Liverpool , Southport, Liverpool Organised by the North Liverpool Cycle Club and

Liverpool Cycle 4 Health. Mark Haig from LFC‟s Action for Health said “it is a

fantastic achievement to get so many men together to cycle and raise awareness of Cancer in men, a lot of new friendships were made that day. 32 local men took

part in this event on what was a lovely hot day, well done lads”.

Men’s Health Blue September Celebratory Event

LFC’s famous Anfield stadium hosted a well attended celebratory event highlighting the LFC ‘Action for Health’ men’s health courses that ran during 2010/11 as well as the Blue September campaign which aims to get ‘men facing up to cancer’.

Over 150 people were in attendance at the event held

in September. It featured a healthy buffet lunch for all, it hosted a local comedian, Chris Cairns who spoke

about men‟s inability to tackle health issues and all guests left with an LFC goodie bag. A guest appearance by Liverpool legend Phil Thompson

closed the event with many fans queuing for photographs or to get memorabilia signed.

Impact We have held over 25 course since September 2009 and 660+ men aged 18-35yrs have attended the 8

week programme that is funded by the Premier League, City Council and Active Cities and supported by BNENC‟s HIM Project and BNENC‟s Kick Start to

Health Project. All participants are offered the opportunity of an NHS vascular health check and agree a personal health plan with the LFC Health Trainer.

“8 weeks ago I was unhealthy, unhappy and unfit, since joining LFC Action for Health‟s men‟s health course I‟m motivated, losing weight and feeling a lot happier!” Chris – Premier League Men‟s Health Course participant “Since the course I have now signed back up to a gym and pushed myself to attend Karate twice a week. I am eating better and taming my beer gut!” Gene – Premier League Men‟s Health Course participant “My diet wasn‟t as good as I thought and al-though I don‟t have much money the people running the course taught me how easy it could be to make big changes for very little money.” Karl – Premier League Men‟s Health Course participant

HIM Allotments Just keep Growing & Growing

The success of our garden allotment project has been really amazing, HIM Project Volunteers

have been involved in developing and running projects in varied locations across Liverpool. The HIM Project was recently contacted by a sheltered housing scheme in RUNCORN who had heard of the great work carried out by our Volunteers and have requested help and support in

establishing an allotment and grow your own scheme for their tenants. Liverpool City Council officers also approached HIM to ask if they would run up a project for a piece of wasteland to be developed in to a community garden and quiet space, we submitted a

funding and project appraisal to Mersey Forrest and now have been asked to go to full application so its a case now of watch this space.

Our success in other areas continues with recognition of our work coming from a lot of partners including Liverpool PCT, Active Cities, Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Football Club, Fit as a

Fiddle, The Live Time Project and local RSL‟s. WE continue to recruit volunteers and have 6 places available for local men to get involved, if you are interested in our work then please contact:- Bob Frank or Graham on 288 8400
