Community Landscape Asset Mapping (CLAM)
• Health Systems committee helped design three surveys: Looking Around, Eating Out, and Grocery Shopping
• 12 Chicago Lawn residents (recruited through community organizations and schools) were hired and trained to conduct the surveys
• 385 blocks, 44 grocery stores, 56 restaurants
CLAM:Looking Around
Block Watch:• 42% of blocks have houses with block watch signs• 15% of blocks have block club watch signs• 11% of blocks have both houses and block club
watch signs• 45% of blocks have either a block club sign or
houses that have block watch signs.

• Vacant Lots:
– 27% of all blocks have at least one vacant lot
• 220 total vacant lots and/or buildings
• 5 vacant lots and/or buildings were identified as “being developed”
– 82% of blocks with at least one vacant lot and/or building have some or lots of street garbage
– 29% of blocks with at least one vacant lot and/or building also have dilapidated windows

• Street Garbage:– 72% of blocks have some or lots of street
garbage• Of those:
– 33% have liquor bottles– 7% have drug paraphernalia

• Graffiti:– 7% of blocks have at least one graffiti marking
• Of those: – 37% are identified as gang tags
– 52% (14 blocks) are located on blocks with houses that have block watch signs
– 22% (6 blocks) identified as gang tags are located on blocks with houses that have block watch signs

• Dilapidated Windows:
– 28% of blocks have dilapidated windows• Of those:
– 79% of blocks with dilapidated windows also have some or lots of street garbage
– 28% of blocks with dilapidated windows have vacant lots and/or buildings

• Housing Stock:– 89% of blocks have SFH
• Of those:– 30% have vacancies
– 74% of blocks have MUH• Of those:
– 22% have vacancies

• Health Care:– 1 Primary Care Physician – 2 Alternative health providers– 0 Specialty Care– 9 Dentists
• Of whom:– 3 spoke a language other than English
» 2 spoke English and Spanish» 1 spoke English, Spanish, and Eastern European

• Schools:– 5% of blocks (21) have schools
• Of these:– 14% are located on blocks with vacant lots
– 43% are located on blocks with houses that have block watch signs
– 71% have some or lots of street garbage
» Of those that have garbage, 26% (4 blocks) have liquor bottles

• 9% of blocks (31) have churches• 10% of blocks (37) have beauty salons or barber
shop• 14% of blocks (55) had at least one Police car
present• The “YMCA” and the “race track” were identified
as the only 2 places to exercise.

• 44 stores total– 4 supermarkets– 23 corner stores– 2 Walgreens– 9 convenience stores– 2 other
• 25% (11) are ethnic– 81% of those are Latino

• Services:– 3 had pharmacies within
• 2 Walgreens, 1 Jewel
– 2 had working blood pressure machines• Jewel and A & M food mart
– 3 had signs with nutritional information– 3 had aisles for low salt/low fat/low sugar foods

• 30% sold liquor, beer or wine
• 70% sold tobacco
• 27% sold both
• 59% had “We Card” signs– 85% of those that sold liquor, beer or wine had

• 34% carried fresh fruits– 67% of which were of high quality
• 27% carried fresh vegetables– 50% of which were of high quality

• 27% sold several choices of fresh beef
• 20% sold several choices of fresh chicken
• 16% sold several choices of fresh fish
• 20% sold several choices of fresh pork

• 56 total– 34% sit down– 16% fast food– 46% take out– 2% (1) coffee shop

• 50% of those not smoke free have non-smoking sections

• 16 offer any type of salad– 6 offer salad with dark green veggies– 7 offer salads with romaine or leaf lettuce– 8 offer salad with iceberg lettuce
• 10 offer a vegetable dish
