LocaL? You bet!

The Sysco Seattle FamilyFor over forty years, Sysco Seattle has had the privilege of supplying our local food service industry with qualityproducts from around the globe.

First formed in 1899, John Shaw started a Seattle coffee business named the Commercial Importing Company (CIC).

In 1953, Continental Coffee began as a truck route sales distributor. In 1970, Continental began distributing a full line of food products with the acquisition of Alaska Arctic Frozen Foods and became the first company in the State of Washington to transfer from a truck route sales system to an advanced sales system. In 1984, the newly renamed Continental Food Services moved to its current facility Kent.

In 1988, Continental Food Service was purchased by Sysco Corporation, America’s leading marketer and distributor of quality assured foodservice products in North America. Today, we are proud to employ 516 people between our Kent and Anchorage facilities.

Sysco customers are expressing a new set of values. Many care not only about price and quality, but also about where their food comes from, who grows it, and how it gets to them. Sysco Seattle connects local farms and companies with customers that value the unique varieties of the produce they grow and products they manufacture. We are committed to local farming initiatives and work closely with small farms and local producers to make their quality products accessible to more people.

Sysco Seattle purchases over $56 million in local products annually! And, Sysco Corporation purchases over $2 billion in products from Washington, Oregon and Idaho annually for distribution.

So when you see a Sysco truck rolling down any North American highway, you can be certain that many of the products on the truck were grown in and around the region we call home.

John N Shaw was president of the CIC, a pioneer Seattle wholesale tea and coffee firm. Its principle product is coffee marketed under the name of Royal Corona. Shaw was a nationally known tea expert and a tea taster for the Department of Agriculture’s National Tea Board for a number of years.

CIC had offices in Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, Tacoma, and Spokane and distributed coffee into Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia.

our commitment

Our PeopleThere’s a good reason for the continued success of our company. It’s people. Quality individuals at every level of our organization put our customers first.

This philosophy of service is practiced every day by our Sysco Seattle associates. In June, 2014 one of our customers in Tacoma complemented his delivery driver who was making the delivery and witnessed our Sysco driver help an elderly gentlemen get across the busy 6th Avenue street. As our valued customer put it “it was just so nice to see somebody doing the right thing and it made me feel very good about being a partner with Sysco”.

Our Local SuppliersWe’re proud to be a part of our local history with suppliers such as Fulton.

Carl Walther Sr. set out to America from his native Bern, Switzerland. Once in America Carl opened Fulton’s delicatessen and grocery in 1921 in Portland and expanded at a rapid pace, gaining more business and a stronger reputation for providing the best protein products in the Northwest to its partners.

Fulton was the first and remains the only beef processing plant in the nation to be certified sustainable for our management practices.

To earn this recognition, we meet rigorous sustainable agricultural and facility management standards, including energy and water conservation, reduction of harmful chemical and materials usage, and safe, fair working conditions. We also work with a number of farmers and ranchers who live these same practices such as Bartels, Oregon Natural meats, Rainier Natural, Oregon Country Beef, and Painted Hills Beef.

Sysco supports the Fulton heritage and, today, the Fulton family tradition and commitment to quality remain an integral part of the business—which is now backed by an industry leader.
