Art pitched for Milford High School, graduating in 1966, and attended UCONN after leaving the Navy. Sports were a hobby all his life. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1967-1971, aboard the aircraft carrier, The Essex. He received a number of commendations as an officer on the Milford Police Department, retiring after 22 years with the rank of Lieutenant in 1997. He enjoyed many years of golfing with some very special friends at El Conquistador, San Manuel and Hayden golf courses until MS began to wrack his body with pain. He was confined to a wheelchair in his later years. For anyone wanting to honor his memory, donations may be made to Casa de la Luz Hospice Administration Office, 7880 N. Oracle Rd., Tucson, AZ 85705, or directly to Casa at The Hacienda Hospice, 2720 E. River Rd., Tucson, AZ 85718. These amazing people attended to his every need when life became a journey too difficult to continue. During these uncertain times, Art would like you to celebrate his (and all) life by having some good pizza and a beer, and be certain to vote in November.

Ronald Dee Windsor Sr. died Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, in Show Low, Arizona at the age of 84. He was born on Feb. 22, 1936, to the late Grover Dee and Maurine (LeSueur) Windsor in Bisbee, Arizona. Ronnie grew up in Pima, Arizona and the surrounding area. At 17, he enlisted in the United States Army and served faithfully for 3 years. On Sept. 21, 1957, Ronnie married Dorothy Ann Peterson in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1963, their marriage was solemnized in the Mesa Arizona Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also ran a successful refrigeration business that helped to support his growing family. He loved to go fishing and hunting. He vacationed regularly to the White Mountains of Arizona with his parents and, later, his own family. Sheep’s Crossing was his favorite place to camp with his family, where they all enjoyed many good times and made sweet memories. Ronnie was a “Champion Archer” and he could actually light a match from 25 yards with a bow and arrow. Following his retirement, Ronnie and Dorothy moved to Missouri to a place that actually had water and received a lot of rain. Following a back surgery in 1998, Dorothy suffered a disabling stroke that left her unable to walk. Ronnie cared for her every need for more than 18 years, until her death in February of 2017. In 2019, he moved back to Arizona to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Ronnie was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was proud of his pioneer heritage. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Please accept my deepest apologies for the error in judgment in discarding the trophies. It was not an intentional

action of disrespect to the “Miner Pride.” The original plan was to beautify the facilities, creating a Hall of Fame and only display State Championship, State Runner-up, Sectional Championship and Sectional Runner-up trophies in the gym lobby to make room for these future trophies and for the Hall of Fame Board. In going through 67 years of athletic awards, many of these were recovered from storage boxes and were cleaned up and placed in the trophy cases. The trophies that didn’t meet this criteria were supposed to be placed in the upstairs storage room on the balcony of the gym. This

task was partially completed by summer workers. The error in judgement came when returning from summer break it was realized not all trophies were stored and left the lobby of the gym. Instructions were given that the area had to be cleared of the trophies for back-to-school staff meetings. That’s when the mistake was made the the trophies were placed in the trash. If I could get a do-over, I would have placed them in a box and left them on the lobby floor for someone to help get them upstairs. I am sorry for my role in this matter and the backlash it has caused for the School Board members and our Superintendent. I will learn and grow from this experience. I spend many house a day working hard to

showcase how great our school is and I hope when the community sees the new Hall of Fame Wall and the trophy cases, my “Miner Pride” will be obvious. The circumstances were not planned and is a misunderstanding as the Mammoth-San Manuel School District has previously said in a statement via social media and news outlets on August 5th and 6th, 2020. My focus is to honor the past, celebrate the new accomplishments of the present with “Miner Pride” and in the future all trophies and awards will be showcased. Thank you. Sincerely, /s/ J. Damon Lovato Jr.Editor’s Note: This letter was given to the San Manuel Miner following the Aug.

11, 2020 Mammoth-San Manuel School Board meeting. It was read during a call to the public. Due to technical issues, much of the board meeting, including Mr. Lovato’s statement, was unintelligible. Following a lengthy executive session (secret), Superintendent Julie Dale-Scott announced in the Superintendent’s Report that arrangements were being made for the high school’s CTE classes to work on the trophy situation. High school kids will be tasked with making more trophy cases and the digital photography class would be tasked with photographing each trophy. It is the Miner’s hope to research some of these trophies and re-print the stories connected with them.

Athletic Director Apologizes for Trophy Situation

For more than a month in Oracle, AZ, we faced two simultaneous existential threats. One was wildfire raging out

of the Coronado National Forest into our town. The other COVID-19. We’re not new to wildfire. We’ve faced it before. At least five times in the last 20 years our town almost burned over. In the aftermath of one of those conflagrations in 2003 we lost a great friend and local journalist, JC Huntington. Food waters washed away his house and took his life. We take wildfire with dead seriousness. The Big Horn conflagration never

consumed our community. The reason is simple: federal, state and local officials together with private sector contractors learned from past years experience and applied those learnings on the ground. A mega force of slurry bombers, brilliant pilots, tactical command judgments, more than a thousand boots on the ground and local cooperation including our own Oracle Fire Department and responsive citizens, fought the Big Horn Fire to a standstill before mother nature finally put it out. The experts backed by the application of

fire science tempered with experience won the day. Their messaging was clear from day one. We listened. The politicians stayed out of it. None of them said stupid, contradictory things that would have confused us. Not so with the other existential threat to Oracle, COVID-19. The response to this one has been a mis mash of contradictory claIms, indecision, and political pandering which has produced an epidemic of confusion and disfunction. There’s a lesson here for citizens and communities: When politicians fail to rely

on science and muck around with their own unproven theories, the world can go to hell in a hand basket real fast. The result is public bureaucracies and the public at large whipsawed by a toxic stew of ignorance and self serving gibberish. It appears that some political leaders cannot and will not learn from these contrasting experiences. But citizens can and should in order to be ready for the next big one - whatever it may be - coming our way./s/ Frank C. Pierson, Jr.Oracle, AZ

Twin Threats to Oracle

The Sea Lions Swim Team took part in a statewide virtual swim meet at the Mammoth Pool on Saturday, Aug. 15. At pools across Arizona, swimmers are swimming races and results are being compiled by Arizona Swimming (the state organization representing USA Swimming). The Sea Lions celebrated several achievements at the meet. Annabelle Sloan (7) competed in her first swim meet. After completing swimming lessons, Annabelle joined the Sea Lions and has learned all the competitive strokes. She participated in five individual races and one relay at the meet. Annabelle has shown tremendous improvement in her first year and her competitive spirit shines

through during races. The group of 6 and Under Boys had a great meet. Asher Riekofski (5), Gabriel Hudson (5), and Alex Ervin (6) had large improvements in nearly every event. All three boys showed they can swim longer races, each finishing the 50 Freestyle in competition for the first time. The races held were longer than the normal summer meet for most swimmers. This gave swimmers the opportunity to participate in races they have not done before. Arianna Ervin (13) had the opportunity to swim the 500 Freestyle for the first time, and showed an outstanding ability to keep a good pace for the 20 lap race. Jocelyn Hudson (10) swam a super 100 Butterfly, beating her previous best time.

Alex Ervin was named Sea Lions Beast of the Week. He participated in all 6 individual events. As a 6 year old, he swam the 100 IM and the 50 Free in competition for the first time – events that are challenging for 7 and 8 year olds. In every race at the meet he swam faster than ever before, and not just a little bit faster – in most races his time was more than 10 seconds faster than his previous best time. The Sea Lions continue to hold practice at the Mammoth Pool 4-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The water is warm this time of year, and the pool is a safe place to get sunshine, fresh air and exercise while having fun learning to swim. Contact Alex or Wendy Gort at 896-2190 or stop by the Mammoth Pool during practice for more information.

The Oracle Community Learning Garden at Wood Field continues to grow and will offer more to the community. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from Sprouts, they were able to build and create a raised garden bed area for children and created a curriculum with local teachers for students. When Mt. Vista students are allowed to return to the classroom, they hope to work more with the school in teaching students about where their food comes from, agriculture and gardening, etc. Volunteers have been working on building the raised garden bed out of block. They were stuccoing the block this past weekend. Craig Anderson has been busy building the garden’s model railroad which they hope to use as an attraction and to educate children about the history of the rail road and its importance in Arizona. When completed the model will include a kid’s town, a village, a ranch, mine, saw mill, bridges and trestles and more. Thanks to grants, donations and volunteers the garden continues to make progress and enhance the community.

Catholic churches in the Tri-Community have cancelled their annual Fiestas this year. In San Manuel, St. Bartholomew Parish, canceled the Fiesta de la Patrias earlier this year due to the coronavirus. It was scheduled for April. Two other parishes have cancelled their popular fiestas because of coronavirus. Blessed Sacrament Parish in Mammoth had to cancel its Fiesta which is held in September. St. Helens Roman Catholic Church in Oracle has also cancelled its Fiesta which is held every October. The Fiestas play an important part in their communities and are a large fundraiser each year for the churches. There is some good news as these churches are preparing to open their doors for in-person services. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, which oversees the Tri-Community Catholic Parishes has given its approval for the option to open again for limited public worship. The limitations would include safety precautions and holy communion to be offered outdoors only. Blessed Sacrament Parish held its mass at the church this past Sunday. Precautions included temperatures being taken as parishioners entered, the mandatory wearing of masks, social distancing (families could sit together), hand sanitizer stations and communion outdoors. St. Helen’s has opened its doors to parishioners and are following safety guidelines for COVID-19. Communion is also held outside with people in their cars. They had been offering drive in services with people seated in their vehicles while mass was broadcast from inside the church. The parishioners could listen in their cars on the radio.

Copper Area News is committed to providing our readers with as much information as possible. We post a daily update on our Facebook page with the total positive COVID-19 Data. This graph shows the daily counts of positive cases for the past week as of press time on Aug. 18, 2020. There are a few points we would like our readers to consider when following this data. 1. This will continue to be a rolling total of positive cases. It does not refl ect recoveries or deaths. The Arizona Department of Health Services does not break out this data.2. If you see a reduction in numbers from day to day it is most likely due to a data entry error or mis-coding of a zip code (at the state level).3. This is all zip code based data; most of our zip codes include unincorporated areas. There is no way to track exactly which areas each of the positive cases are. Example, Kearny and Winkelman each have small communities in their zip code that are not in the Town’s incorporated boundaries.4. If you live in Gila County, please follow the Gila County Health and Emergency Management, Facebook. They have maintained their data on recoveries and current positive cases. 5. You can follow other data such as ICU bed use, Ventilator use and hospital capacity online: https://bit.ly/3inh28O Working together, we can slow the spread of the virus across the Copper Corridor. Wear a mask in public, remain physically distant (6 feet apart or more), practice good hygiene (wash your hands frequently, sanitize high touch areas) and stay home if you are not feeling well.

Jax has a new heart!work to do. The next big step is for Jax to come off his ventilator and we are hopeful this will happen in the next week. Jax will still be at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for some time while he continues to recover. The family would like to thank everyone who bought tickets, sold tickets and especially those who donated prizes to ensure the raffle was a success. Please continue to pray for Jax as he becomes stronger everyday to rejoin his family. “Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Hyrum, Camille, Maddie and Jax Formo said.#JaxheartjourneyWinnersKnicks Ranch Cabin in the Woods in Greer, Az + $100 VISA gift card donated by Mike Knickerbacker – Winner: Julie Zulauf48-quart Calavera Cooler w/ two tumblers donated by Francisco Gonzalez – Winner: Charley GoffVortex Binoculars 10x42 donated by John and Tanya Ruiz – Winner: Stacy DelgadoMicroblading Session ($350 credit) donated by Joanne Lerma – Winner: Maria Gonzales
