contentsI get really excited when I see people working together in a team and even more excited when members of the team are able to grow as a result of the experience. At Wellness Warehouse we are truly privileged to be able to encounter and meet so many people who have dedicated their lives to making and growing products that not only are inspired by remarkable creativity, but that also embrace the concept of community building. In fact, many of the small community businesses we work with have such an element of altruism, big dreams and big goals for their communities, that they would put most businesses to shame.

South Africa is filled with a vast array of distinctive people, but the sense of togetherness and national pride we share has grown – from our spectacular rugby win in 1995 to the brilliant show we all put on in 2010 with the World Cup, not to mention all the other inspiring events we’ve hosted. As a nation we’ve proven ourselves to the world. Taking hold of that national pride and allowing it to filter into our communities is a good next step – by supporting and getting involved with people on all levels within your community, you’re able to become part of something much bigger than just you. And it’s not difficult to make that start – by learning about those around you and supporting them in any way you can – from an encouraging word to buying their products.

Not only is South Africa rich in character, it’s also rich in natural beauty and resources. In this edition, we look at nature and what products are readily available for healing and beauty. We celebrate all our suppliers that support community, we explore De Hoop reserve which is a sanctuary for body, mind and soul, and feature a new form of yoga that utilises an interesting hammock-like contraption, which I’m keen to try out this month.

I’d like to encourage you to really get involved in your community – do everything you can to make yours better so we can all embrace a sense of belonging and growth, where we share our wisdom with each other and create a legacy of caring for future generations.

Yours in community spiritDr Sean Gomes, Co-founder

Switching on your brain…and switching it off again

Loss of brain function causes dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, which usually manifest later in life. However, new research shows that this brain slowdown starts in your forties. Your brain is also responsible for mood, memory and sleep. Unbalanced neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) may worsen anxiety, depression, poor sleep and stress.

These nutraceuticals contain ingredients that help maintain your brain’s health and balance neurotransmitters naturally:

MEET JAMES SLEIGH, Managing Director of Camphill

I grew up at Camphill, my parents used to run the farm so it is completely natural for me to work with and care about community. Our residents are beautiful honest people which makes it easy to see beyond their challenges. I have deep respect for them and for what they have overcome. They are full of goodness and honesty, and a genuine sense of integrity, it really inspires me.

"Seeing the flow of growing things, adding value and selling them gives the community a sense of value and dignity."

HOW DO YOU LIVE LIFE WELL? I do yoga, and make sure I eat well. Personally, I love Camphill produce, there really is a difference in taste when things are grown naturally and you can eat them close to their source.

WHAT DRIVES YOU? My passion is for the residents, they hold Camphill together. Many of them don’t have families, it is really their home. Some of them stay for as long as forty years. I feel compelled to make a sustainable home for them. Each day I am presented with a broad range of challenges - the organisation has many aspects to it which constantly need to be monitored and balanced. We have 50 dedicated members of staff who are passionate about their work.

HOW YOU CAN HELPThe Camphill Community provides a home and purpose for intellectually challenged individuals many of whom have no family or any other source of care. Each member is involved in running the farm but sponsorships are also required. If you want to get involved or help in any way through monetary donations, volunteering or providing stock for their charity shop please contact them on Tel: 021 571 8651 or Email: [email protected].

HOME LIFEGroup homes are an essential part of life in Camphill – an extended family environment where people with special needs, live with group home leaders, their children and volunteers in a life-sharing situation. There is always a wide range of capabilities, as well as disabilities in the group home, so life is managed co-operatively. Leaders encourage a spirit of mutual respect and tolerance, and help residents to take initiative and develop their social skills.

For more information visit www.camphill.org.za

camphillWe drove 40km up the West Coast

from Cape Town to visit their Sunday market and found an organic, biodynamic farm fully equipped with a bakery, dairy and herbal workshop. Camphill is a model community filled with enterprising projects that support intellectually challenged adults to experience a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Residents live in houses as families and are offered a range of therapies and education and to further develop the skills of each individual in a culturally rich and wholesome life. There are between eighty and ninety residents and a number of volunteers. Each resident is respected as an individual with individual needs and participates in farm life and production. The products made in

the various enterprises supply the houses and are sold in outlets in the Western Cape generating income which contributes to the financial stability of the organisation. Grants and donations also help subsidise the community.

The DairyCamphill dairy produces organic natural dairy products, providing milk for the community and extra to sell. Reisdents make yoghurt, cheese and cream cheese. Jersey crossed with Brown Swiss dairy cows are grass fed on organically grown pastures and residents experience great therapeutic value by interacting with the cows, and learning about the cycles of nature.

The BakeryThe bakery produces rye bread, various rye blends, sour dough breads, seed loaf, raisin, white and brown bread, using stone ground flour and “wild” natural yeast in a natural slow fermentation process. No added preservatives, pre-mixes, additives or fillers are used. It also produces rye and other rusks, wheat free biscuits and granola.

The Herbal WorkshopExpert assistance from Doctor Richard Phythian, a qualified alchemist from Scotland spurred the success of the herbal workshop where residents are taught a variety of manufacturing skills. Only the purest ingredients are used, and, where possible, they use herbs grown on the farm.

The FarmA biodynamic garden yields a wide range of herbs and organic vegetables consumed and also sold. It has a small tree nursery propagating plants like jojoba, saltbush, tagasaste and fig trees. Other products from the Camphill farm include Jojoba beans, guavas and firewood.

Residents are involved in many aspects of the farm, growing vegetables, maintaining the herb gardens, and working with the animals.

Camphill is a model community filled with enterprising projects that support intellectually challenged adults to experience a meaningful and fulfilling life.

CAMPHILL Market

On the first Sunday of every month, Camphill has an open day market from 10h00am to 2h00pm. Freshly baked bread, yoghurt, cheese and farm grown produce like spinach, aubergines, herbs plus body products like Jojoba oil, herbal deodorants, body creams, natural soaps are available. They have a home grown Marimba band, a coffee shop and activities like tractor rides and a water slide for kids. Many local farmers and traders also have stalls, selling food and crafts. Head 40kms out on the N7 highway towards Malmesbury, turn off on the Klein Dassenberg road and enjoy a stunning day out with the family. Log onto www.camphill.org.za for directions.

did you know?Camphill Village is part of a worldwide movement started in Scotland in 1939 by Karl Konig, an Austrian pediatrician and educator, and several colleagues, inspired by the philosopher and educator, Rudolf Steiner. Rudolf Steiner pioneered Waldorf education, biodynamic agriculture, and new frontiers in science, the arts, sociology, medicine, and curative work. Camphill in South Africa started in Hermanus where a school for intellectually disabled people still exists. The West Coast Village was an extension of that and was set up in 1964. From humble beginnings, on unimproved, sandy farmland, it grew into a warm community filled with trees, houses, a bakery, dairy and chapel.

Many of our customers have tried Camphill’s delicious bread, yoghurt and cheese or their herbal range of body products but not too many know the incredible story behind Camphill Village.

Although quinoa (pronounced keenwa) was one of the staples

of the Inca Empire, it’s only recently come back into the fore of good nutrition. Extremely versatile, quinoa is more closely related to spinach, beetroot and Swiss chard than other cereals or grains, but it’s been dubbed a pseudo cereal because it can be cooked like rice, or ground into flour. But that’s not why the United Nations has named 2013 the year of quinoa. Its nutritional content is nothing short of phenomenal.

FROM THE BEGINNING - Quinoa is easily digestible and has a low allergy potential, which makes it a good food choice for children and toddlers. It contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, making it a possible candidate for reducing cancer risk, and has shown promise as a cholesterol-lowering mechanism. With its fibre and protein content Quinoa is a must for regulating blood sugar levels.

POMEGRANATE & QUINOA SALAD Serves 2

• Cook the quinoa according to pack instructions adding the vegetable stock cube to the cooking water. Leave to cool, then break up with a fork.

• Meanwhile, toast the pine nuts in a dry frying pan until lightly golden. Mix the pine nuts, pomegranate seeds, herbs, lime juice and 4 tbsp oil through the quinoa.

Foxenburg Estate is situated on the spectacular northern slopes of the Groenberg in the Wellington area of the Western Cape. Here, a herd of Swiss Saanen goats is expressly maintained on the certified organic farm

pastures for the production of premium quality goats milk cheeses.

Various types, such as soft fresh Chevre, Chabris and cream cheese as well as aged-ripened hard cheeses such as Crottin, Shepherd, Caprino Romano and Foxtail are all produced by hand honouring traditional northern

Hemisphere farmhouse cheese-making methods.

Made from 100% whole goat milk, free of preservatives, hormones, antibiotics and artificial colourant, each cheese is manually checked and packaged, ensuring optimum quality. Our goats milk is influenced by the goats foraging on the Foxenburg organic mountain terroir, giving the cheeses the distinct aroma, flavour and texture characteristic of our cheeses. Suitable and striking presentation make Foxenburg Estate cheeses

The perfect ingredient

Available at all stores & online.

The BBC says quinoa is as close to a perfect ingredient as possible, based on its nutritional facts. You don’t have to become an alchemist to enjoy it either – it’s prepared similarly to rice, but should be rinsed or soaked before cooking to remove its bitter outer coating (check package instructions). It seems you’ve nothing to lose and everything to gain by including this totally gluten-free seed in your culinary repertoire. It is also entirely versatile and can be served hot (like rice) or cold as a salad.

SUSTAINABILITYStatements such as ‘fresh from the farm’ may sound impressive, but do beg the questions: ‘how far away is it from its final destination’; ‘does the farm take the environment into consideration in its practices’; and ‘does the farm embrace the society in which it’s placed, offering mentorship, teaching and community growth?’

One of the biggest trends in nutrition today is outlined by the term ‘from farm to fork’. It advocates the shortest distance and quickest time from harvest to home. The trend covers a number of aspects and its goals include:

•Maintainingfood'snaturalhealthbenefitsand nutritional quality.

• Improving the economic vitality of smalland local farms.

•Ensuringthesafetyofourfoodsupply.

•Avoiding theuseofgeneticallymodifiedfood.

• Encouraging diversity in the types offoods available regionally.

•Decreasingtheenvironmentalimpactandcarbon footprint of mass food production.

It may sound like a tough task to spend the time buying local farm fresh food when even the corner garage store is stocked to the ceiling with a superfluity of fresh-tasting goodies. Convenience or health seems to be the modern conundrum. However, farmers markets and natural food stores are becoming more abundant, offering convenience and health in one space.

GO LOCALAs an individual, you can begin to make a difference by insisting on buying local produce and being more aware of what you’re actually buying. By putting pressure on your usual supermarket, or by simply deciding to only support local suppliers, you can begin to instil farm to fork values in your community.

For example, it’s all very well to want and demand brightly flavourful strawberries in the middle of winter so you can prepare a deliciously wholesome feast – but the cost of

fresh anything that’s out of season is higher than just its price tag. Living sustainably, and in doing so caring for your community, begins with being in touch with the seasons and what bounty is naturally offered at any given time during the year. Not only is buying seasonally economically sensible, but also looking at local suppliers will ensure that the carbon footprint of your life is reduced – and this has a domino-like impact on the greater environment. According to the Centre for the New American Dream (CNAD), local food is often safer because even if it’s not organic, small farms tend to be less aggressive than large factory farms in terms of dousing their crops or animals with chemicals. Small farms are also more likely to grow a wider variety of food, which protects biodiversity and preserves a wider agricultural gene pool – which is an important factor in long-term food security. It’s quite obvious, but not something you may have considered, that eating locally produced food significantly contributes to the fight against global warming – long-distance transport of food eats up petrol and diesel (and increases pollution), as well as creates a greater demand for industries to produce transport-related products. Transport also affects the bottom line cost of food – higher fuel costs mean higher food costs.

When communities pay closer attention to where our food is grown and how it reaches our table, and people re-discover the ‘localness’ of all that’s around them, food suddenly has a sense of place. Farms and restaurants build close relationships, strengthening their local economies and forging new cultural identities for their communities… all based on food. – The Lexicon of Sustainability

Even if you’re an aspiring gourmand or natural food fundie, the chances

are you don’t always give much thought to where exactly your food comes from. Most often in today’s world, food is cleaned and packaged neatly on a shelf, waiting to be bought.

WHERE'S THE FLAVOUR GONE?As a child, did you experience the pure joy of scrambling up a mulberry tree and gorging on the delicate bursts of its fruit’s flavour and then experiencing brilliantly stained feet, fingers and mouth for days afterward? When last did you taste a peach that simply exploded with juicy flavour? Can you remember what food used to taste like? A tomato softly red and simply alive with tang or a huge, bright red apple so crisp your first bite was loud enough to

wake the neighbours. Do your children even know what a peach is supposed to taste like or is their understanding rooted in artificial flavours and sweetened copies of the real thing?

“The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.” – Galileo

Any good chef will tell you that it’s not just the quality of the ingredients and the particular care taken in creating a dish that matters, it’s the spirit in which it’s done. Love and care taken in preparing a meal are tangible. And the same is true when it comes to growing food.

Many of the organic farmers and food makers in and around Cape Town not only put a lot of love into their labour, they also include and uplift their communities. With mentorship and participation of people in the surrounding areas, as well as creating safe and purposeful havens for those with disabilities (such as Camphill), the food you buy is most certainly packed with heartfelt goodness.

did you know? The average morsel of food sees more of the world than the farmer who grows it, travelling an average of 2,000 kilometres from field to fork. It takes 15 calories of energy to put 1 calorie on the table, and 4 of those are expended in transportation.

IF YOU ENJOY A SUMPTUOUS SLICE OF FRESHLY BAKED BREAD, GO FOR WHOLE GRAIN (NOT WHOLE WHEAT)

Camphill has a dairy in the Western Cape. They believe in humane treatment of all people and animals. Their Jersey cows produce rich milk from which a range of organic products are made. Full cream and half fat yoghurt are in great demand enjoyed by many of Camphill fans. They also make a delicious Labeneth Meditarranean soft cheese from their yoghurt.

Transform any dish into a gourmet masterpiece with expert reductions from Chef Abe Conradie. Whether looking for a salad drizzle or a creative lift for a sauce, pasta or vegetable this range will do the trick. Reduced balsamic vinegar has added herbs and spices and mayonnaise comes in flavours like wasabi; black pepper and rosemary and sun dried tomato and sweet basil.

Learn the value and strength of community by initiating a neighbourhood project in your area. A recent urban trend sees neighbours using vacant plots between houses to grow edible gardens. People from the houses nearby take it in turns to water, weed and plant. Everyone gets a fair share of the produce grown. Some keep bees and share the honey yield. Other neighbourhoods join forces to buy products in bulk to benefit from reduced costs. Buying items in bulk like olive oil, water, honey, grains and nuts saves on packaging and trips to the supermarket. It also sets up a friendly precedent for helping each other and spreading goodwill. Studies have shown that urban community gardening projects have assisted in the overall well-being of the people involved, from a mental and physical health perspective. Children exposed to growing vegetables tend to make healthier food choices, and helping each other in the garden offers up the opportunity to learn generosity and team work.

that way your smoothie will be chilled and the berries won’t be too runny.

Countless dietary advice recommends cutting out bread. That’s because most bread is full of chemicals and empty calories. Home baked bread with highly nutritious flour complete with all its goodness is highly recommended. Eureke Meulens farms with old methods of crop rotation and gentle soil aeration. They use a slow grinding stone mill and do things in a time honoured way to extract maximum benefit from Mother Nature.

Put on an apron, some loud opera music and boil water for pasta. The Castagno range is organic and has options from spaghetti to fusili, penne, alphabet, lasagne and vermicelli. Add a teaspoon of oil to the boiled water and your pasta won’t stick together.

Create some community spirit by starting a cooking roster with a neighbour or two. Cook up double the amount and send a dish next door. If your neighbour returns the favour both of you will have a night off from meal making.

We are thrilled to introduce our new supplier, The Free Range

Chicken Company with a range of new and exciting egg variations, all of which are Free Range. We spent some time on the farm to give you the low down on what ethical farming entails and what free range really means.

EIKENHOF FAMILY HISTORYEikenhof Poultry Farms (the farm behind the Free Range Chicken Company) is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, producers of truly Free Range eggs in South Africa. From humble beginnings in 1935 when 2000 birds were released in the fruit orchards in the Elgin Valley the Free Range laying flock has grown to in excess of 200 000 hens.

FLYING THE COOPInternational guidelines of Compassion in World Farming, in their bid to ensure ethical and humane treatment of animals, outlined five freedoms for farmers to comply with. These include:

•Freedom from hunger and thirst•Freedom from discomfort•Freedom from pain, injury and disease•Freedom to express normal behaviour•Freedom from fear and distress

The words ‘Free Range’ are evocative of soft, easy days safely bathed in sunlight. It’s certainly a better image than being cooped up in a low-ceiling structure with little natural light and almost no movement (which is the fate of battery chickens).

CHOOSE FREE RANGE

Always ask your local store and restaurant if they use Free Range eggs, if they don't, put pressure on them to make the switch.

19www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Not too many people are aware of the difference between Free Range eggs and Regular eggs you see on the shelf. We spoke to the Free Range Chicken Company for some clarity.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,

committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever

has. Margaret Mead

Be mindful of production methods of the food you eat. Check up on where it comes from, how far it travels and the farming methods used. Always ask your local store and restaurant if they use Free Range eggs. If they don’t, put pressure on them to make the switch.

As with any naturally born or grown product, not all the eggs produced by free range hens are the same – around 12% of eggs laid don’t quite stand up to the exacting aesthetic of most consumers. So, to ensure as little wastage as possible and to offer incredible convenience, The Free Range Chicken Co. created liquid eggs. More than R20 million was spent on upgrading the egg packing station and the Ready Egg Plant for their state-of-the-art liquid egg processing factory.

If you’re not quite able to crack an egg one-handed while stirring something sumptuous with the other hand (like all those celeb chefs seem to do on TV), then liquid eggs will up your kitchen confidence.

Use the fat-free ‘egg white only’ for meringues or protein shakes. There’s a low fat option too that contains a mix of white and yolk for a great balance.

MAKE A PLEDGE – BE KIND TO CHICKENS

NATURAL SELECTION

"

did you know?Less than 5% of eggs sold in South Africa are Free Range?

did you know?It costs around 50% more to produce Free Range eggs than eggs from caged birds.

I’m a blend of egg white & yolk, providing a low-fat alternative, with the same great taste.

The Free Range Chicken Co.Ready Egg | Lite270ml R20.99

I’ve been separated for your convenience to become the ideal meringue, egg white omelette or protein shake.

The Free Range Chicken Co.Ready Egg | White270ml R19.99

But what exactly does Free Range mean?It basically means allowing the animals freedom to move about on open land, able to peck and eat what they like (although chickens are given feed, they also have the opportunity to eat insects and other natural greens found in their environment) and generally behave as they would in the wild. Although there’s a practical aspect of keeping chickens within a specific area, as long as their movement is only minimally restricted, they are still termed free range. This shouldn’t be confused with cage-free birds, as they’re only allowed space to roam within a barn or building and although they’re able to move freely within that space, they’re still severely constricted.

SUNNY SIDE UPAside from the humane practises of Free Range farming, there could also be a nutritional benefit to eating eggs from a Free Range chicken. It stands to reason that the more relaxed and ‘happy’ a chicken is, the healthier the produced eggs will be.

Some studies on Free Range eggs show higher levels of Omega-3s, vitamins A and E and lower levels of total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and Omega-6. Free Range eggs are also likely to have more orange-coloured yolks (although the yolk colour alone won’t help you identify the egg as Free Range because this can be affected by ingredients in the chicken’s feed like marigold petal meal, dried algae or alfalfa meal).

But not all Free Range eggs are equal, one of the concerns about eggs being the possibility of salmonella contamination. Egg producers like The Free Range Chicken Co. have this well covered. In 2004, they became the first South African egg marketer to get HACCP certification. This stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, which is a systemic preventative approach to food safety. To further enhance food safety, The Free Range Chicken Co. uses foodsafe dye to mark each egg with its source code and best before date on the shell. Made from recycled water bottles, the rPET egg packaging used by The Free Range Chicken Co. not only allows for easy spotting of damaged eggs, its also suitable for storage in the fridge to maintain freshness. Both the rPET egg packs and the HDPE Ready Egg bottles are fully recyclable.

Here’s a brief overview of some of these incredible substances:

WHEATGRASS The sprouted grass of wheat seed no longer contains gluten or other common allergic agents because it’s been sprouted (but if you’re gluten intolerant, check with your healthcare practitioner before gulping down huge quantities of the juice). It’s alkalizing and excellent for promoting healthy blood. It also normalises the thyroid gland which stimulates your metabolism and this assists in digestion and promotes weight loss.

SPIRULINA Is one of the highest known protein sources – it is 70% complete protein (as opposed to cooked steak which is only 25% complete protein). Spirulina can assist in controlling blood sugar levels, which makes it ideal for diabetics.

BARLEY GRASS With over ten times more calcium than cow’s milk, five times more iron than spinach and seven times more vitamin C and bio-flavanoids than orange juice, barley grass is also a significant source of vitamin B12, which is important if you’re on a vegetarian diet. Additionally, barley grass neutralises heavy metals such as mercury and has anti-viral properties.

WILD BLUE-GREEN ALGAE Contains virtually every nutrient and has 60% protein content. It also has a more complete amino acid profile than beef or soya and is one of the best known food sources of beta carotene, B vitamins and chlorophyll. This incredible algae has been shown to improve brain function and memory and strengthen the immune system.

CHLORELLA Filled with vitamins B, C and E as well as numerous minerals, it assists in reducing cholesterol, preventing hardening of arteries and is a great immune booster.

Although green supplements can act as a serving of fruit and vegetables because they contain vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients, you still need to incorporate fresh, raw leafy greens to your daily menu.

GROW YOUR OWNThere’s nothing quite as satisfying as growing something. And when it comes to wheatgrass, it’s a simple process that allows you to have instant access to an immune and energy boosting superfood.

It’s best to pre-sprout your seeds as they’ll grow much better. To do this, mix around twice the amount of cool water to the number of seeds you have and allow them to soak for 8-12 hours. Then, drain off the water and rinse thoroughly in clean cool water, draining well. If you have the patience, repeat the process a couple more times before planting. • When your seeds have tiny

roots, it’s time to plant them.

• Thoroughly moisten the soil, but allow any puddles to dry. You can use vermiculite if you prefer.

• Spread your seeds evenly, Cover your seed tray to keep light out and moisture in (but make a few breathing holes so air can circulate freely).

• Water lightly daily to keep your soil moist.

• On the third or fourth day, you’ll see the blades emerging from the soil.

• Now you can move your tray to a well-lit spot – but if it’s in direct sunlight, you’ll need to be quite vigilant about keeping the soil moist. Don’t over water, though, or you may encourage mould growth.

• You can begin harvesting as soon as the grass is long enough to cut. Freshly cut grass yieldsthebestflavour.

The Tribe has Spoken

By Glenn-Douglas Haig

It is very seldom that I am inspired to action by a negative, but there is something happening in our society that I can no longer ignore. The brutal violence against women in our country and especially in the Cape, has reached epidemic proportions. Young girls’ mutilated bodies litter the countryside. My friend Oscar is in jail for shooting his girlfriend. What is happening and how can we stop this?

The first thing that springs to mind is that our men are feeling powerless, and that they are regressing to primal, barbaric behaviour in the absence of purpose and meaning in their lives. I was shot seven times by armed robbers in my home, so I have met these men face to face. I looked into their eyes and saw a complete absence of life, of warmth, of love. But they are not separate from us. They are not “them” – they are us. Oscar is one of us.

In my limited understanding of humans, and of South Africans in particular, I pinpoint a lack of identity as a primary suspect. We have lost our rightful place in the natural order of a healthy society. Young men are no longer supported by a “right of passage” into adulthood: there is no ritual or ceremony to mark their different stages of growth, they are not initiated by their wise elders and most importantly, they have no strong leaders to show them the way. Our country’s leaders are emotionally stunted, intellectually challenged and dangerously self-serving. It is no surprise that this filters down to our communities. Any healthy system has a hierarchy of place and function, and we have lost both.

But here is hope, and the solution lies in your hands. I challenge you to identify your smaller tribe within the larger South African community. Who is your tribe? Who are the people that you interact with? Start with your closest friends and have the conversation. Start asking how you can create a sense of place and belonging for the younger people in your own community. Is your teenage son’s 18th birthday going to be a drunken frenzy, or can you gather the men of your tribe and create a significant day of ritual, of imparting wisdom, of honoring the man-within-the-boy? How can your tribe regain its dignity, respect and reverence for life?

I’m going to start that conversation on Saturday 6th April at the Wellness Warehouse in Kloof Street. Bring your husbands and sons and let us foster our tribes together.

Grow your own >

GET GOING WITH GREEN

Green superfoods have the highest concentrations of easily digestible nutrients, vitamins and minerals to protect and heal the body, as well as fat-burning compounds ."

did you know?Green superfoods are extremely rich in chlorophyll, which is the pigment that gives plants their green colour. The molecular structure of chlorophyll is very similar to human blood and studies show that when this is consumed, your blood’s production of haemoglobin increases. Higher amounts of haemoglobin in the bloodstream means more oxygen-rich blood, the first and most important element that cells need to thrive.

USE THE WATER YOU DRAIN OFF YOUR SEEDS TO WATER OTHER PLANTS OR HERBS – THE WATER IS FILLED WITH

INVISIBLE FIBRE™ A 100% tasteless and soluble fibre, made from the guar bean. It lowers the Glycaemic Index (GI) of food, balances blood sugar and helps control appetite. Invisible Fibre™ supplies the fibre that is an essential part of a healthy diet, but which modern diets lack, without changing taste or texture. Excellent for kids and diabetics. It dissolves completely in hot and cold drinks, water and in food. Invisible Fibre™ is heat-stable, so it can also be used in baking and cooking.

Although vegetarianism is becoming more widely accepted by society,

families raising their children with vegetarian ideals may encounter opposition from people who still believe that including meat in your diet is the only way to ensure balanced nutrition. Fortunately this negative stereotype is far from accurate. This common perception is changing as vegetarianism is becoming more accepted globally. In fact, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA’s) Dietary Guidelines state that “Vegetarians of all types can achieve recommended nutrient intake”.

Numerous studies confirm that a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and soy is your best bet for living a longer, healthier and more enjoyable life.

• A British study that tracked 6 000vegetarians and 5 000 meat eaters for 12 years found that vegetarians were 40 percent less likely to die from cancer during that time and 20 percent less likely to die from other diseases. •AstudybytheDepartmentofCommunityand Family Medicine at the University of California at San Diego found that children on a vegetarian diet actually grew taller than meat-eating children.

Besides global studies, another reassurance about the sustainability of a vegetarian diet comes from the people who really know – women who have had trouble-free vegetarian pregnancies, and are the proud parents of healthy vegetarian children.Wally and Debbie Fry are an example.

Over nineteen years ago they began experimenting to find protein alternatives to meat and all three of their daughters were raised as vegetarians from birth. “When my eldest daughter Tammy was born, there weren’t a lot of meat alternatives and we didn’t make a big thing out of being vegetarian. She was a strong healthy little girl who was hardly ever sick. Later when Hayley and Stacey were born, they were also raised vegetarian. When my family started getting tired of eating broccoli, beans, cauliflower and so on, my husband decided that enough was enough and we hadto 'invent"ourownmeatalternatives. This led to the the beginning of the Fry'sbrand, now an international success.” explains Debbie Fry.

The May 2012 edition of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that people who consume approximately 30 grams of fibre per day have a 24% lower chance of dying from any health-related cause, compared to people with lower fibre intakes; and that people that increase their fibre consumption by 10 grams, reduce their death rate by 10% on average. New research thus shows that fibre may help you live longer. Fibre is also important because it is converted into short chain fatty acids by bacteria that reside in the intestine. Short chain fatty acids provide intestinal cells energy to live and research shows that they are associated with reduced cardiovascular- and other diseases.

Many people don’t consume enough fibre in their diets. Although insoluble fibre (found in bran-based cereals) acts like an internal broom to keep the large intestine clean, scientists are now reporting that soluble fibre (usually found in fruits and vegetables) offers additional health benefits. Soluble fibre keeps you regular, helps you feel fuller for longer, and maintains energy levels by reducing the glycaemic response of the food you ingest it with. New research shows that fibre may help maintain healthy cholesterol levels, and help in the fight against weight gain. Viridian is a big-hearted company, committed to creating a nutritional

supplement range with integrity, quality and innovation. The company was founded in 1999 on two fundamental principles; to develop a range of supplements with the highest possible ethical standards and to generate significant funds for children’s and environmental charities.

In South Africa the Viridian Foundation started in 2012. To date Viridian in the UK have done countless charity projects all over the world, including South Africa. We wanted to do more in our own community, focussing on children.

Our policy is never to just hand over the money, but to find out what they need so the children directly benefit from the contributions.

OUR FIRST PROJECT WAS THE LIGHT HOUSE BABY SHELTER IN JOHANNESBURG:

Many of us working at Viridian had been driving past the Lighthouse on our way home for a long time, but we did not realise what the Moses basket was for. It was a real eye opener to find out that babies are left there on a regular basis, right on our doorstep. The Lighthouse is run by a passionate lady Eleanor Dustin who left the corporate world to help abandoned children.

They are always in need of nappies and food. You can also visit them to play with the children. The babies mostly stand a chance of being adopted, while the older toddlers have to be looked after.

You can follow our projects on Facebook: Viridian Foundation

When it comes to taking care of your health, it is all about the intention and that is what makes Viridian so special. Not only are Viridian’s products ethically sourced and beneficial to health but Viridiian the company benefits the lives of others.

everything you need to live life well

Learning a few massage techniques and adding more fragrance to your

life is a beneficial therapeutic practice. See yourself as an alchemist mixing base oils with different aromatherapy concentrations for the condition at hand. After all, massaging is an ancient art that benefits the body, mind and soul.

Once you know the qualities of the oils you can mix up a little bottle for a child to take to school and smell whenever he or she feels nervous, or perhaps use an oil that promotes courage for a teenager giving a speech or presentation. There are fragrances that are comforting or soothing, help with grumpiness, or impatience, assist with feelings of homesickness, almost every emotion can be addressed with essential oils. If a friend is highly stressed, inhaling certain oils can bring a good dose of calm. In today’s modern times where we are conditioned to thinking that there is a pill for every ill, we underestimate the healing powers of aromatherapy. Gentle nurturing touch in the form of massage generates soothing and calming feelings. Extend this to the people around you – and you

will get lots of appreciation and joy. Trials have shown that endorphins are realeased during massage.

Ready to use massage oils are a perfect solution for home massage, these come pre prepared and indicate the quantity to use for a person at any one time. If more massage is required after using the recommended amount which could be 5, 10 or 20ml, then a plain carrier oil like Almond or Jojoba can be used to complete or extend a massage. Small quantities can also be applied to a small area, try an under foot application for a great boost. You can also add oils to the arms, the back or legs. Start off with a carrier oil and add the essential oil with the quality you need. Bath or massage oils will have a mix of essential oils and base oils. These oils are rapidly absorbed into the skin. Oils should not be rinsed off as they will be absorbed by the skin. Differentt bath or massage oils might have the same base oil but use different essential oils for different uses. Some may energise, while others are calming. Check labels to see if safe to use during pregnancy and for any precautions that might exist.

LOST TRADITION When last did you pop over to the neighbour’s house to borrow a cup of sugar, or invite the people living on either side of you for a meal, just because? Busy schedules and the fast pace most people live at leave no time for welcoming a new neighbour with freshly baked goods and an invitation to dinner.

In the past, communities acted as a moral barometer. Locals were judged by their peers and had few secrets. It may not sound that appealing to have everyone know your business, but it certainly encouraged honesty, integrity and created a sense of sanctuary.

In England, it’s quite common for a person to die alone in their flat and not be discovered for weeks or even months. It’s a national problem that exists because there is no sense of caring for each other. Social isolation is also a big contributing factor to chronic depression and even suicide. Living in a caring and close community can benefit you and those around you in so many more ways than merely coming together for combined crime watching.

BE COMMUNITY ORIENTEDSupport companies that support communities. Teach people skills and start a community enterprise. Many successful businesses started in the kitchen, back yard or garage. Learn the value and strength of community by getting more in touch and active in your immediate surrounds. You may wonder how to connect but it’s a simple matter of taking the initiative – start by gathering phone numbers and e-mail addresses for easy communication.

"The community stagnates without the impulse of the individual. The impulse dies away without the sympathy of the community." William James

Get to know your ward councillor: The person elected to look after your neighbourhood is there for just that purpose. Find out who they are, introduce yourself and let them know your concerns about your area.

Start a newsletter: Collect email addresses and invite people to list their services and post community notices.

Create a lift club: Whether it’s to work or for your children going to school, find out who’s going in your direction. Not only will you save fuel and reduce your carbon footprint, it’ll be a chance to make new friends.

Initiate a walking club: Buddy walking is a fool proof way to add a bit of pressure and inspiration to get some exercise in.

Collect clothing: Appoint someone to actively collect clothing that doesn’t fit or isn’t needed anymore. These can be given to charity shops.

Be observant: Take a moment to observe who is in your area and your time schedule, say hello each morning or evening, just to let them know who you are and that they’re not alone. If you notice someone you usually see everyday hasn’t been around for a while, make some enquiries so you can do your bit to encourage caring.

Start caring: Set up a care committee – challenge each person in your neighbourhood to be in caring contact with the person on their right. Get a chain of care going and if anyone is in trouble, many will be able to help. For example, if a person is ill, the care committee could help out by delivering groceries. If everyone takes it in turns, the chances of anyone being on ‘duty’ more than once a year is unlikely.

Look out for kids: Find out who in your area has children so you can create a roster of parents who’ll be the baby sitters for an evening. It’ll give you as parents the peace of mind to go on a date night or as a group and your children can make friends in the area.

Pool resources: You may not know that your immediate neighbour is a brilliant lawyer, or perhaps an incredible craftsperson.

Things like lift clubs, recycling, safety watches and charity drives are just

some of the things a community can share.

In 1962, political activist and songwriter, Malvina Reynolds wrote her hit song ‘Little Boxes’ as a commentary on the abundance of new homes built in her area. Urbanisation has brought about a huge explosion of development in cities and towns since – but instead of building greater communities, more homes seem to lead to more isolation. It’s almost easier to be friends with someone in New York than the person next door – people appear more comfortable

negotiating virtual companionship than tangible ones. Real community connection has somehow left modern society. For starters, urban sprawl and daily commuting has taken people out of their locale. People travel far and wide to go to work, to shop and take their children to school. Children from the same neighbourhood don’t walk to school together anymore, they drive outside their suburbs. You don’t bump into your neighbours at the local store, you shop on the way back from work. Then we have higher walls and closed doors creating a loss of openness and access to each other.

So many people haven’t the slightest idea who their neighbours are, yet there are enormous benefits in belonging to a united community.

My favourite subject centres on having an eco state of mind in everything we do. In life and business especially we should have a triple ‘bottom-line approach’ that focuses equally on ‘people, planet and profit’.

The idea of reaching further than ourselves and family and into the greater community fits this philosophy perfectly. Make a difference by deciding ‘how’ you want to contribute. It could be time, resources, money, or all three. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

1. Find a charity you feel an affinity towards, check out their credentials and how much money actually reaches them at grass roots, then see where you can get involved.

2. Communities, above all else need to be sustainable. They need skills to feed, clothe and shelter themselves. Think of initiatives like tree planting, vegetable gardens and clothing collection to get involved in.

3. Energy access is another issue in rural communities. Find an initiative that provides portable solar heating and charging devices to the communities and get involved in either the funding, manufacturing or distribution. These devices supply energy for cooking, warmth and an added bonus of cellphone charging.

My favourite saying is: “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” Kahlil Gibran.

JOURNEY TO DE HOOP

Regular weekends away should be mandatory. If everyone spent

time in nature to revive and refresh their spirit, there surely would be more peace in the world.

De Hoop Nature Reserve is the perfect antidote to city stress. Meander for three hours down the coast from Cape Town, through some valleys, past farm stalls and fields. Turn right at Spitzkop just before Swellendam and you will find yourself at the second largest natural Wetland in Southern Africa. Thirty six thousand hectares form a World Heritage site and conservation area characterised by rich biodiversity and rare species of Fynbos.

Inland, the reserve boasts a 19km Vlei logged on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The Vlei is home to an abundance of bird species and during flood years has been known to support up to 30 000 birds (97 water bird species), including threatened and near-threatened species like the Lesser and Greater Flamingo, White Pelican, Chestnut-banded Plover and Caspian Tern. Hiking and cycling trails are a great way to see game species like Bontebok and Cape Mountain Zebra.

De Hoop is run as a public-private partnership between Cape Nature and the De Hoop Collection. While Cape Nature manages the conservation aspects, the De Hoop Collection looks after the hospitality and accommodations options. It is run with a community based model that combines empowerment of local people and job creation with the establishment of eco-sensitive tourism and distinctive accommodation.

CHOOSE YOUR SPOTWhether you want the luxury of the Manor House with its beautiful yellowwood floors, huge bathrooms and old world far appeal or a great spot to camp, De Hoop has a range of accommodation options to suit

everyone. Camping sites are dotted along the banks of the Vlei with the most exquisite panoramic view. Bungalows are beautifully clean with gorgeous linen and facilities with shared ablutions. Many of the bigger self-catering units were renovated from original historic buildings. At the heart of the reserve is a basic supply shop, the Fig Tree Restaurant and Pub.

The De Hoop Collection has something to offer families travelling on a limited budget, couples seeking a comfortable but affordable breakaway, right through to international guests looking for a top-end luxury experience.

A unique fusion technique, suspension yoga assists in aligning your body from head to toe and relieving compressed joints. This practise enhances traditional asana (poses) with the addition of comfortable support and a whole new dimension of movement. It has a wonderfully playful element and combines grounded and aerial flow, making inversion easy, enhancing back-bends, twists and hip openers. The OmGym system has added handles to make inversions and stretches even easier.

American born Sarah Kellett is a suspension yoga fundi who developed the OmGym system. She has a background in athletic therapy and yoga, but had a car accident that left her with painful compression injuries and spinal misalignment. This required an enormous amount of rehabilitation, during which time she discovered the dynamic art of suspension. Yogis all over America love the system and Sarah has spent many hours developing and choreographing yoga routines best suited to the OmGym system.

Together with a number of professionals, including chiropractors, physical therapists and medical doctors, Sarah implemented and built on the age-old

practice of inversion and traction therapy. By combining the most effective elements of traditional philosophies, Sarah discovered that her own rapid healing had an incredible side effect: greater flexibility and strength than she’d ever achieved before.

The use of variable support allows you to enter new realms of liberating movements, which use traditional yoga poses as a departure point but also easily cross over to countless other practices or dance, therapy and total body fitness. .Other than the pure joy of being unencumbered and over and above the myriad health benefits of yoga practise, suspension yoga’s benefits include:

• Tight joints are decompressed.• While aligning the vertebrae,

pressure is removed.• You can perform advanced yoga

inversions without neck or back compression.

• Hold challenging postures longer and in correct alignment.

• Stretch further and with less strain.

• Create better body awareness and increase overall agility.

• Muscular tension is released.• Build balance and coordination.

"Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured." BKS Iyengar

Yoga has been practised for thousands of years and as with

many arts, it has evolved over time to include new techniques and types of practise, the most common form being Hatha yoga, which focuses on exercise, breathing and meditation.

Imagine yourself suspended in a hammock-like sling, using gravity to stretch and bring greater reach to your poses. It’s almost like being cocooned in your own womb and allows for much greater freedom of movement. You may well have done this as a child when you lay tummy-down on a swing, so it’s not difficult to imagine

yourself in downward dog, but with a softly supportive sling offering you support and balance. The effects of the inversion, stretch and balance of the pose aren’t compromised, in fact they’re enhanced.

ALIGN YOUR BODY >

did you know? The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit 'yuj', which means ‘to unify’ or ‘to yoke’

did you know?Indian yogis have been using ropes and vines to assist in their exercises for thousands of years. In the modern era, world-famous yoga teacher BKS Iyengar popularized the use of rope and fabric slings to help with inversions and a great variety of suspended and supported yoga poses.

upsideDOWN upsidesStanding on your head or inverting your body is part and parcel of yoga practise. There are a number of very healthy reasons for this:

• Improve circulation - Your heart works hard to pump blood around your body and it’s often working against gravity. Inversion assists the circulation by allowing your body to work with gravity.

• Tension relief - Studies have shown that a full body stretch upside down reduces muscle tension by over 35% within ten seconds.

• Lymphatic drainage - Tired or stiff muscles benefit from being upside down as this assists the lymphatic system (it has no pump of its own), speeding up the process of detoxification.

• Ligament strength - Although ligaments are flexible, they’re not very elastic – the subtle reverse loading of inversion strengthens them as well as your connective tissue.

• Balance - When the upper regions of your inner ear are stimulated, it helps to develop and improve balance.

• Core strength - Developing core strength is becoming more and more important in today’s world as people sit for longer periods of time (which has a highly negative effect on your health). An unsupported inversion and moving in and out of the pose builds your core strength.

• Oxygenate - Inversions help increase oxygen flow to the brain.

Hanging freeSuspension yoga is taking the yoga community by storm. We explore this extraordinary new practise.

Sarah has recently arrived in South Africa and plans to introduce this extraordinary

system here. She’ll be holding a number of workshops in

March so you can experience how liberating this practise is. For more information contact:

REGENERATION As teenagers, many people are disdainful of their parents and their particular brand of parenting. But, as these teenagers grow into adulthood and begin to raise their own families, the wisdom of their parents begins to creep through and influence their own parenting style. Busy lifestyles, however, do dictate that many parents simply can’t spend the appropriate amount of quality time with their children. Often, children are at school or other activities for longer than their parents are at work. A mad rush during the week after work to get home, make dinner, ensure homework is done, grooming and preparing for the next day leaves very little in the way of good family relations. Weekends do offer more promise, but with shopping to be done and friends to be seen, little time is left for slowed-down nurturing and relationship building.

That’s where grandparents can play a vital role in that they:

• Provide a sense of family continuity and history;

• Have stories to tell and are great conveyers of the family’s cultural heritage;

• Contribute to the children’s sense of belonging and security;

• Become additional role models;• Often have more time than do parents

for reading stories, teaching new skills, and playing games.

Research from the University of Florida, US says that a grandparent’s active presence in a child’s life serves as a protective factor, particularly as it affects a child’s self-esteem.

When looking at the construct of an extended family, where aunts and uncles also reside in the home, research has found that because there are so many people to look up to and learn from, growing children become ethically strong and mature. Additionally, a joint family provides constant human company, which is thought to increase the number of important sociological and psychological influences in your life. But that’s not to say you need to live with your extended family to give your very best to your children. In fact, just having the support and influence of other adults in your life, whether siblings, parents or friends, brings about a wider world view and subsequently a more balanced approach to parenting.

The extended family has existed throughout history, and although

modern living has scattered families and created a more insulated world, trends are moving back towards this essential part of growing balanced generations. With rising costs of living throughout the Western world, grandparents as care-givers are becoming more and more prevalent.

To understand who you are in the world, it’s important to have a picture of where you come from. Your ancestry is peppered with interesting characters all with a story to tell and all of whom have influenced why you are where and who you are today. You may look like great granny Martha, but your

sense of humour reminds your mom of Uncle Tommy. These characteristics form an integral part of your unique make up.

"The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family." Lee Iacocca

ONLINE COMMUNITIES, YOUR BEST MOMMY FRIEND

By Jess Mouneimne, Editor mommymatters.co.za

Motherhood certainly isn’t for sissies - from the start of pregnancy, through to birth and beyond, we are expected to handle motherhood with the finesse and grace you see in the movies. No public vomiting during pregnancy, a pre -preggy body just weeks after giving birth, a clean and tidy home with a baby that sleeps through the night – and of course a happy and at all times smiling mommy-because this is the best time of your life right? These are just some of the pressures that society places on us moms and I guess the important thing is to find a solid support structure that can hold our hand as we wade through this minefield. For some this is family and friends, but as I quickly found out with my first child, they can often either let you down, or turn out to be less than supportive and more controlling. Luckily social media and blogging has made it easy to connect with likeminded others. The door has been opened to connect genuinely with other moms either via Facebook, Twitter or reading blogs. Making mommy friends via social media has become easier than ever and many solid friendships are made via these networks. Just a few years ago, the only option you had when making ‘mommy friends’ was at a ‘moms and babes’ type of class. These environments are often the uncomfortable and judgmental ones where you are limited to befriend a handful of people who you possibly only share one thing in common with- you were both pregnant at the same time. As parenting blogs become easier to access, new moms are able find and befriend like minded moms from the comfort of our own couch, in our pyjamas- and then decide if we have enough in common to meet up for coffee. If you haven’t yet done so, I invite you all to find that online community that makes you feel most at home and see for yourself how the heavy load we often feel as mothers becomes a whole lot lighter.

Created specially with time pressed women in mind, Human+Kind has created a set of simple, multi-functional products with superior natural formulations. 3 products contain everything needed to help you achieve all your skincare and anti-aging goals and to attend to any of your family’s skin irritations. Human+Kind isn’t just founded on ethical principles; it’s developed its range specifically for today’s woman.

TAKE BACK YOUR MORNINGIn today’s rushed world, everyone is forced to multi-task and while that’s not good for your psyche or stress levels, it’s simply the way life is. Very often, products that are supposed to ease the load only end up adding one more thing to your list of things to do.

Lifestyle and beauty magazines are filled to the brim with tips and suggestions on how to achieve that perfect skin. Skincare tips are also peppered with technical-sounding words like hyaluronic acid or peptides, something every woman thinks she simply has to get her hands on. In fact most women believe that to achieve the model-like effect, they need to invest in a minimum of three skincare products – a wash and two moisturisers, one for during the day other for use at night.

Gone are the days when cold cream was the rage and women sat in front of their dressing tables covered in white muck waiting for a miracle. Even so, most women don’t want to compromise on their skincare, even if it means having to wake up those precious 15 minutes earlier, and settle for a less-than-tasty dinner to afford everything required.

CHILDREN COUNT‘Every Child, Every Day is everyone’s responsibility and everyone’s business’, is the motto of an Australian community drive set to add more responsibility to parenting. In many cultures, the community feels responsible for the children regardless of whether they are the actual parents. Shower blessings on your children, start them off in an environment that offers the best care, love and attention. Give them honour, consideration and time and use natural, eco-friendly products to keep them free from harm. An African tradition sees mother’s creating a birth song for her child. Even before the child is conceived a mother leaves the village, finds a quiet place under a tree and sits there until she hears the song of her unborn child. She teaches this song to the future father of the child. This song is sung inviting the child into life. Before birth, the midwife and women of the village learn the song and while it is being born, they sing it to the new baby. When the child grows up the whole village learns his song. During each special occasion, when he or she is upset or requires celebration the child hears the song. During the marriage ceremony, he sings his own song. The last time the song is sung is at his death. Members of the village are truly blessed and honoured and live by the credo that, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’

It’s a proven fact that helping others makes you feel good.

everything you need to live life well

Make a stand & care for communityStudies show that altruism is good

for your emotional well-being, and can measurably enhance your peace of mind. Most of us realize when we make the effort to give without expectations of reciprocity, we feel fulfilled and energised.

Our charity of choice is Help the Rural Child which is connected to the Goedgedacht Trust. One of the reasons we chose them is because of its many-layered approach to sustained community building.

Living within and being aware of what’s going on in a community is one thing, but when you set out to change the face of that community by investing time, resources and care, you end up changing the lives of those in the present and well into the future. This is exactly what Goedgedacht Trust set out to do when it was established in 1993.

Situated in a beautiful old Cape Dutch farm (originally established in 1704) on the slopes of Kasteelberg, the Goedgedacht Trust is a South African charity focusing on the care and upliftment of rural children. Self sustainability is the key to every project developed within the community.

FEEL GOOD – GIVE GOODMany people want to give to a good cause,

but even though there seem to be so many needs and so many people working hard to address those needs, it’s not always straightforward finding a cause to adopt and be zealous about. The Goedgedacht Trust is one that is easy to get passionate about, though. Their Path out of Poverty programme (POP) is set up to assist children who are living in rural areas that lack amenities and luxuries so many people take for granted. Lack of good basic services like electricity and running water are just the beginning. The isolated nature of rural living also doesn’t bode well for access to good education or cognitive stimulation. Also, poverty is rife and that comes with its own set of issues, from alcoholism to domestic violence.

By offering rural children the opportunity to learn, share and grow in a positive environment helps them to move from poverty to prosperity not only with good cognitive skills, but also good life skills and the sense of belonging and accomplishment that positive communities afford.

GIVE A LITTLEJust a small action has an effect – Help the Rural Child has five charity shops operating in the greater Cape Town area where you can drop off clothes, books and bric-a-brac to assist in funding the myriad programmes

run by Goedgedacht. Wellness Warehouse has a collection bin outside their Kloof street store for smaller items like clothing or you can call them and they have a collection service. Tel: 021 689-8392.

For more on how to participate in the future, log on to www.goedgedacht.org and you’ll understand why we’ve adopted them as our charity of choice.

wellness rewards cardHelp The Rural Child is a charity dedicated to supporting programmes that work with children in rural communities. Their purpose is to turn otherwise invisible rural children into happy secure citizens. 1% of Wellness Rewards are donated to the Help the Rural Child.

In this issue we salute all our suppliers that support community in their production process. We are so very proud of Still Pure for the work they do with community; and not only that, for the integrity of their brand and plant development. We are delighted to share the background story of how Still Pure operates so you can feel free to use their products with a deliciously clear conscience.

Still Pure’s essential oils and natural, botanical body products are carefully built on a firm foundation of integrity. Everything from ingredients chosen, the production process and the end products are all handcrafted with love and respect for you, the environment and community. They make sure they know where their oils and raw materials come from, how they are grown and produced by setting their business up in a sustainable structure with three important components. Total traceability means not having to rely on third party certifications or middlemen and shoppers get to have supreme quality at affordable prices.

SUPPORT COMPANIES THAT SUPPORT COMMUNITIES

Why we love the Still Pure brand

FROM THE NURSERY… PURE GREEN is their nursery that grows plants for essential oils. The nursery gives advice to farmers, access to the correct genetic species of the plants needed for essential oils and does research on producing essential oils from indigenous plant species.

TO THE DISTILLATION… Their engineering department builds custom-made distillation units for growers around the globe. EDE (Essential Distillation Equipment) enables growers to extract oil from their plant material.

AND THEN THE OILS… STILL PURE either buys the oils back from these growers to use in their Still Pure products, or they source alternative markets for them.

Supporting local enterprise and empowering communities in South and Southern Africa sees Still Pure focusing on locally grown plants like fynbos essential oils and cold pressed oils like Baobab, Kalahari Melon, Marula and Mongongo.

Namibian myrrhStill Pure’s Namibian project helps the Himba tribe towards becoming financially self-supporting without interfering with ancient culture and customs.

As water is extremely rare, rather than bathing, the Himba custom is to make a dry powdered perfume from a mixture of plants that grow wild in the desert. This consists primarily of myrrh (locally called omumbiri) which is mixed with ochre and animal fat in a cow horn and rubbed onto the women’s skin and hair. Still Pure helped develop the resin from the myrrh (Commiphora wildii) into pure essential oil and hydrosols (used as room fragrance). They assist the Himba in packaging advice, finding sustainable markets and developing their own brand label. All profits from sales of these goods goes back to the Himba tribe.

If, like most people, you slather yourself daily with luxuriously

prepared creams and lotions that cost the earth, consider going back to the earth. There are numerous oils that naturally contain the very same ingredients cosmetics claim will do miracles for your skin.

Essential oils are the volatile liquids that are distilled from plants. One of the factors that determine the purity and therapeutic value of an oil is its chemical constituents, which are determined by a number of variables such as the part of plant the oil is produced from, soil condition, geographical region, altitude, climate and distillation process.

Whether you use oil in your bath, for a massage or for daily skin and hair care, oils are wonderfully versatile and filled with healthful nutrients.

• Jasmine Oil is sensually scented and imminently feminine. It’s a common ingredient in perfumes, but also assists in improving skin elasticity, stretch marks and scars. Use it for evening out skin tone for all skin types.

• Sesame Oil is great for oily skin as it has drying properties. Filled with antioxidants, it also offers some sun protection. Mix with olive oil to create a soothing body moisturiser

• Jojoba Oil resembles sebum (the oily substance secreted by your sebaceous glands to keep skin and hair moisturised) and is great for dry, aging skin, as well as sunburn, chapped skin and psoriasis. It’s filled with micro-elements like zinc, copper, silicon, iodine, chromium, vitamin E and B.

• Grape-seed Oil is light and odourless, and although it has a drying effect, it makes a great base for aromatherapy oil mixes. It’s an antioxidant and loaded with flavonoids which play a role in enhancing collagen and maintaining elastin.

• Wheat Germ Oil is high in vitamin E, a richly healing antioxidant. The scent is quite strong, so it’s best to mix this with sesame or grape-seed to balance it.

• Baobab Oil from one of Africa’s most iconic trees is highly moisturising, filled with vitamins A and F (for rejuvenation and renewal of cell membranes) and E. This beautiful oil assists in skin softening, resurfacing and is non-drying.

• Argan Oil works well for teenage acne and scarring, as a hair moisturiser and to restore aging skin by evening out skin tone and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It contains vitamins A and E, as well as essential fatty acids Omega-6 and 9.

• Coconut Oil is antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial and an antioxidant. It also speeds up healing of bruises and strengthens your skins connective tissue.

• Almond Oil is a wonderful moisturiser and an all natural beauty treatment for all skin types. It is a favourite choice for massage therapists as it is non-greasy and easily absorbed. It’s packed with vitamins A, B1, 2 and 6, and vitamin E.

• Olive oil isn’t just a healthy addition to salads, it is high in skin nutrients like linoleic acid and beta-carotene, effectively moisturising and nourishing your skin or hair. And you don’t need to search far and wide for the perfect brand, South African olive oils are excellent quality and manufactured to exacting standards.
