    What is the Indian Valley

    Character Counts! Coalition

    (IVCCC)?A continuation of a process that started in 1997-another step in the process

    Encompasses the Souderton Area school districtincluding all six municipalities

    Representative of 12 community sectors: business,education, faith, government, healthcare, police, media,

    parents, substance abuse organizations, volunteers,youth, youth-serving organizations.

    One of over 600 communities using the DevelopmentalAssets framework

    What is the Indian Valley

    Character Counts! Coalition

    (IVCCC)?A group focused on what matters to kids, not whatsthe matter with kids

    Supports positive youth development with numerousyouth character building initiatives within theSouderton Area School District (The CaringCommunity Fair, Fifth Grade Celebration and Parent

    Seminars)Has created community awareness through theconstruction of four highway signs that greet motoristswith the message Welcome to the Indian Valley,

    where Character Counts!

    Mission Statement

    To promote positive youth development byproviding information, supporting programs

    and strengthening community relationships

    that promote the principle of Character

    Counts! and that build assets to help youth

    stay healthy, safe and drug-free.

    IVCCC is looking at two

    simultaneous processes:

    Reducing risk factors in four domains

    Family

    Community School

    Individual

    Increasing protective factors by

    Providing opportunities for involvement

    Teaching skill development to youths

    Recognizing them for who they are, not what they do

    It has been proven through accepted academic

    research that it is possible to strategically put in

    place specific programs to reduce risk factorsand increase protective factors, however

    programs are usually, if not always,

    implemented by professionals, organizations,non-profit institutions like hospitals, schools or

    police departments. This is only part of the

    solution to create a healthy community.

    Indian Valley Youth SurveyLocal data includes 8th, 10th and12th graders surveyed in the fall of2011 (total n=1,207)

    This is the second time, (1st time in2010), IVCCC has conducted thisyouth survey measuring

    Developmental Assets.There is now trending date to useto inform decision makers

    Highlights

    The total number of assets possessed by IndianValley youth is 20 out of 40, (national averageis 18 out of 20).

    48% of all students possess a majority of theassets (>20)

    30 out of 40 assets have increased since 2010

    A majority of all youth do not regularly use

    alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or someone elsesprescription drugs- (70%, 82%, 87%, 90%respectively)

    The average age-of-onset for alcohol use is 13.3
