Our Community magazine is produced for Birmingham Business Park

by Edwin Ellis Creative Mediawww.edwinelliscreativemedia.com

ERICA SPINKI am the Park Manager at BBP and have been part of the management team for over 13 years. I currently lead on contractor management, health and safety and work closely with Liz, Alex and Jo. It has been great to watch Birmingham Business Park develop and continuously improve the offering to our valued occupiers.

ALEX GOSSI am a graduate management surveyor and BBP is one of the first properties I have been involved with. It is such a varied site and there is never a quiet moment, which is giving me lots of opportunities to learn about managing a large asset alongside introducing me to occupier relationships. You may see me around the park, popping in to conduct an inspection or grabbing a sausage roll from Greggs!

JO RICHMONDAs the Property Manager, I oversee the day to day running of the Management Team and deal with all landlord and tenant issues. BBP is a wonderful example of a modern business park putting occupier engagement, community spirit and social responsibility at its forefront. It’s a joy to be involved in managing the park and I look forward to many new initiatives in the future.

The Mayor of Solihull (Cllr Stuart Davis) was at Birmingham Business Park to mark the official opening of a brand new access road, linking the

Park to Bickenhill Parkway. The new 300m stretch of road was constructed as a

joint venture between Prologis and Legal & General Investment Management with additional funding provided by Birmingham Business Park’s majority owner, the BlackRock UK Property Fund. Prologis completed the first part of the road to access its new distribution development, Interchange, and the second phase finally connecting the Park was overseen by development manager, Canmoor.

Prologis took responsibility for developing the first section of road, which was commenced and completed last year, while Canmoor have now completed the second section, marking completion of the project. The new road provides flexible access to and from the Business Park easing congestion at peak times and future-proofing the local road network.

Park Development Manager, Liz Allister said: “Progress Way demonstrates our continued investment and future-proofing of our multi award-winning Birmingham Business Park, as the park continues to grow, thrive and develop as a premium business park in an unrivalled location. We have received great feedback from occupiers and visitors since the road opening regarding access in and out of BBP.”

PARK WINS PRESTIGIOUS GREEN AWARD Birmingham Business Park has been awarded an International Gold Green Apple Environment Award in the campaign to find the greenest companies and organisations.

This is the Business Park’s second Gold Green Apple Award, the 2018 award was in recognition of the Community Cycling Club and the 2019 award recognised their bi-annual Sustainability Weeks, which encourage occupiers to enjoy the biodiversity of the Park.

The Business Park competed against more than 500 nominations in the International Green Apple Awards 2019 and was presented with a trophy at a glittering ceremony at the House of Commons in November.

Birmingham Business Park has now been invited to achieve Green World Ambassador status and have its winning paper published in The Green Book; the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice.

I work for Citizen, one of the UK’s most trusted social housing providers,

Citizen owns and manages 30,000 homes for diverse communities across the West Midlands, from

urban tower blocks to rural villages and towns. We have a clear social

purpose, which is to provide homes that are a foundation for life.

I’m the PR & Communications Manager for Citizen. This involves managing all of our internal communications, our

website, our social media channels, our email marketing and all our press liaison.

I love the variety of my role at Citizen and how I get to meet everyone across

our business.

Do it! I think it’s a great place to work. Perfect location, great office space and parking facilities and I genuinely believe

the Business Park staff care about the companies who work here. They offer a great array of activities and they are always trying to make life on the park

the best it can be!

I really enjoy working on Birmingham Business Park. The location is fantastic.

It’s literally only a couple of miles from the M6. I also like how the park tries to create a community amongst all the companies who work here. Their programme of

wellbeing events is fantastic.

Birmingham Business Park is partnering Solihull Council’s Wildlife Ways project to encourage employees to make more active and sustainable commuting choices, by promoting enhancements to cycling and walking corridors.

Employees leaving their car at home will reduce congestion and parking pressures, resulting in better air quality across the borough. A fitter and mentally healthier workforce also reduces staff absenteeism and saves money for both business and employee.

Wildlife Ways has a team of support officers available to help your organisation with travel planning at a corporate level. This can include:n Staff travel surveyn Car sharing schemesn Discount corporate travel schemesn Cycle purchase scheme

CLARIBELS BUSES GO CONTACTLESS

GET INVOLVED IN WILDLIFE WAYS

Claribels have invested in new ticket machine technology which will enable customers to be able to pay by contactless Visa Mastercard or via Google Pay or Apple Pay. With the growing number of passengers between International Station and Birmingham Business Park this should be extremely beneficial.

The other advantage of the new ticket machines will be the ability to track the real-time departure times of the buses via Google Maps and via the Network West Midlands app (launch date tbc). The new options provide more benefits for customers to and from BBP.

High Speed Two (HS2) is the new high speed railway for Britain.

When fully operational, nearly half of the UK population will be linked to 25 existing and new HS2 stations.

It will provide reliable connections, more comfortable and faster journeys, giving people more choice about where they live and work.

By releasing space on existing railway routes, HS2 will create more space for additional commuter and freight services countrywide, and in turn, improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions. HS2 will also generate a huge boost to jobs, homes and growth in the cities and communities it services.

Find out more about HS2 at: www.hs2.org.uk

THE INTERCHANGE AREAEarly works for HS2 are carried out by a joint venture between Laing O’Rourke and Murphy & Sons, known as LM. Near Birmingham Business Park (BBP), LM is working around the A452, A45 and M42, which surround the site of the future HS2 Interchange Station.

This area is referred to as the Interchange area. Throughout 2019, LM’s works included carrying out various ground surveys, and vegetation clearance along the future railway route. LM also constructed access roads off the B4438, A452 and A446. These roads allow LM to efficiently service their compounds, reducing the requirement for future traffic measures and alleviating congestion.

Smart transport solution for Business Park employeesEmployees at Birmingham business Park are being encouraged to join the Liftshare scheme which encourages people to share their journey and works with employers to find smart transport solutions.

This reduces demand on car parks whilst saving companies and staff money with a private, web-based platform that enables employees to find others to share their commute with.

The Birmingham Green Hub, including Birmingham Business Park, NEC, Resorts World and Birmingham Airport provide free access to the platform for all staff, allowing employees to identify potential sharing partners from a huge pool of

commuters travelling into the area each day.

Solihull Council is partnering with the Green Hub to provide an enhanced Liftshare offer as part of a DEFRA-funded project specifically trying to reduce congestion and improve air quality in North Solihull.

The platform recently welcomed its one millionth member, with each of its regular sharers saving on average £1,000. Every day, these sharers are saving around 1 million miles.

Typically, companies that use Liftshare reduce their need for parking by around 30% and many have saved hundreds of thousands of pounds per year by not leasing extra parking.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2020Throughout 2020, there will be increased works on Northway Island, and the B4438, A452, A446 and M42. Throughout early 2020, LM’s initial activities include earthworks, surveys and utility works, which will be phased to avoid overburdening the road network.

The majority of required traffic measures will be carried out overnight, between 8pm and 6am, to minimise disruption. Once these initial activities are

complete, LM will progress with its highways development programme. This will involve extending the current road network around Northway Island and the B4438, as well as creating new routes on HS2 land; while the existing network remains accessible. These road improvements will ensure that when the future station is operational, the network is fit for purpose.

During 2020, LM will also construct four new highways

bridges, which will be completed by early 2021. In the future, these bridges will connect the current road network to the new routes being created. One bridge will be located over the M42 and another over the A446, as well as two bridges on HS2 land surrounded by the A452, A45 and M42. Intermittent traffic measures will be required on the M42 and A446 in preparation for the construction of these bridges. The M42 will close between junctions 6 and 7A (northbound) and 9 and 6 (southbound) for one weekend, early August, to allow LM to install the M42 bridge deck. Specific dates for this closure will be formally released late spring.

This schedule is subject to change depending on site and weather conditions, but HS2 will keep you informed of any adjustments at: www.hs2insolihull.co.uk

STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH HS2’S WORKSSign up for live news updates about HS2 in Solihull at, www.hs2insolihull.co.uk, including information on traffic measures, community drop-in events, community and business funding, station development and much more.

Do you have a question about HS2? You can get in touch with HS2 via the Helpdesk team on:08081 434 [email protected] HS2 and LM also hold monthly information drop-in sessions in the Birmingham Business Park Management Office, each third Wednesday of the month, between 12pm. and 2pm.

MINIMISING DISRUPTION To minimise disruption during their works, LM will:n Maintain all building access in the area n Carry out the majority of traffic measures overnightn Ensure clear signage is in place for driversn Keep the highways network operational n Phase works to avoid overburdening the highways network n Leave the area in a tidy state when works are complete

Canon (UK) Ltd is the UK & Ireland marketing and sales operation for the

global company, Canon Inc., based in Tokyo, Japan. Canon is a leading provider of digital imaging technologies for people, businesses and industry.

An emphasis on technology is part of Canon’s corporate DNA and since 1933, the company has been dedicated to helping people reimagine what is possible through imaging. Canon’s state-of-the-art Customer Experience Centre (CEC) and regional office is located in the Birmingham Business Park and opened in 2017. Since then, the CEC has been providing customers and partners with an end-to-end experience and the opportunity to test drive Canon’s latest production and industrial portfolios.

Canon chose the Birmingham Business Park mainly due to the fantastic location as part of The Hub, with strong road and rail links, explains Barrie Street, B2B Marketing Manager, Canon UK.

“We also value the amenities and engaging activities available that contribute to the wellbeing of people who work on the Park. A successful initiative our staff took advantage of was the allotment beds launched in May last year, which provide a fantastic opportunity for our staff to get outdoors, connect with nature and enjoy the company of others,” he adds.

As a global imaging business, Canon believes it has a responsibility to empower a

new generation and appreciates what the Park provides with various initiatives available to help occupiers in their efforts to attract and retain staff, particularly young people, whose workplace expectations in modern times are changing.

“Our ambition is to secure the future of Canon by developing a strong talent pipeline, while also enhancing the capability of existing employees,” adds Barrie.

“Our initiatives include apprenticeships, work experience, professional qualifications, internships and ‘early in career’ activities.”

Canon believes in having a greater purpose beyond profit, and this is embodied in Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei – a Japanese word that means ‘living and working together for the common good’. Barrie adds: “As part of our commitment to supporting communities, Canon launched the Young People Programme, which is giving young people a visual voice through a series of interactive workshops while showing the power of visual storytelling.

“The West Cumbria workshop, for example, was held over five days, and over 400 children and young adults aged 11-18 attended. Through this workshop, Canon

equipped students with the skills and platforms to share their stories and create new opportunities both for themselves and others.

“Sustainability is also a priority for Canon. In relation to waste management we have taken a ‘circular economy’ approach to overall organisational, site or project specific resources. In recognition, Canon were awarded silver under the category of ‘Circular Economy’ in 2019, and the gold rating by EcoVadis for a fifth consecutive year.

“Businesses are constantly facing an increasing number of social and environmental challenges. In order to become a more socially engaged and environmentally responsible company, it is essential to identify and promote related programmes, at all levels and scales. This will allow businesses to fulfil their corporate responsibility and actively contribute to the prosperity of society.”

The development of Sulzer’s brand-new service centre is well underway,

with significant milestones being reached over the autumn and winter periods. The plot on the prestigious Birmingham Business Park has played host to a complex construction project, with the building now 90% water tight ahead of the next phase of development.

After a summer spent preparing the foundations of the building, November saw the moment that all major steel work was erected. Half of the building was cladded,

leaving the other half accessible for the concrete pour into the overspeed pit, which is submerged at floor level. December saw the steel structure of the main office block erected, standing 3 floors tall with the staircase and lift shaft in place. 2020 started with great endeavour, and as of February all structural work in the office block and main warehouse is erected, with the building almost entirely sealed from the elements. The floor space will soon be concreted to create a base for the finishing compound to be poured and will be dry by mid-April. Eventually all

of the office furnishing and plant equipment will be moved into the premises, transforming the building into a state-of-the-art repair and maintenance facility. External roads and parking will be completed in May, paving the way to a successful future.

Project Manager Warren Bell said: “Seeing how our new home has sprung to life from the drawings is fantastic, it’s truly exciting for everyone involved. We’re happy with how the project is progressing, and we’re confident that the next phase will be just as successful.”

Birmingham-based distance learning provider, Open Study College, has

celebrated the opening of a larger new office space, signifying an important step in the business’ long-term growth strategy.

Late last year Open Study College moved a short distance within Birmingham Business Park to a more modern, 4,500 square-foot space.

The team celebrated the move with an official opening on Tuesday 26th November, when management, staff and friends of the business enjoyed a drink and a look around the new working environment.

The new stylish and contemporary office complements the brand’s positive and forward-thinking persona to inspire a collaborative environment for staff and visitors.

“Since myself and my father founded Open Study College 12 years ago, we have supported over 90,000 people to achieve their dreams, whether that was to change career, progress in their role or simply take on or learn a new hobby,” explained Samantha

Rutter, CEO at Open Study College.“There have been many changes

during that time, and over the last five years in particular there has been a step change in the direction of the business. This has allowed the business to realise its true growth potential, and as a result many new opportunities have opened up and we are

going from strength to strength. Of course, this growth has resulted in a larger team in order to offer the best service to our students. Birmingham Airport has launched a fully electric bus fleet to replace the current diesel vehicles in operation and becomes the first UK airport to run six ultra-low emission buses with a pantograph charging system.

Operating as a free passenger service via all landside car park routes, the new fleet is made up of six 7900e single deck electric buses supplied by Volvo Bus UK, providing an 80% lower energy consumption than the equivalent sized diesel bus.

An investment of £1.8m was made by the airport, with an additional grant of £1.4m provided by the Department for Transport under its Ultra Low Emission Bus Scheme.

Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport said: “I’m extremely proud to implement six fully electric landside buses which will operate via a fast charging pantograph system. The buses are not only a big win for us in terms of the reduction in emissions, but they will also contribute to providing an improved passenger experience.

“This is a really exciting time for Birmingham Airport. Over the next 15 years, we are investing significantly to improve our facilities and service for customers, whilst reducing our carbon footprint to reach an ambitious target of net zero carbon by 2033.”

Resorts World have given their central atrium a makeover, visually enhancing the space for guests and staff with a

bold artistic installation.Following the fourth anniversary of

the Midlands leisure and entertainment destination in October 2019, Resorts World appointed Alexander Owen (AO) Architecture to transform their central atrium space, which sits at the centre of the scheme housing outlet shopping, dining, leisure and entertainment experiences and a conference venue all under one roof.

The objectives of the project for the London design duo were to enhance the existing design, initially launched in 2015, to create an exciting and memorable guest journey and to inspire exploration and discovery by their guests throughout the various floors and venues of the building.

Completed in partnership with local Midlands signage firm, Bowden & Dolphin, and painting by Bagnalls, the finished spectacle and colourways are designed to feel comfortable and relatable; both relatable to the human scale as the eyeline transitions through the levels and also in warmth and feeling.

Ian Bennett, Operations Director at Resorts World, said: “Our guests are coming to visit Resorts World to spend important leisure time away from the rush of everyday life. We realise that the physical and visual environments they choose to spend this time in are becoming increasingly significant, to

suit their mood, meet their needs and enhance their enjoyment. Our aim is to make their visit as fun, welcoming and memorable as possible, which underpins this new makeover within the building and guest journey.”
