HISTORY

The Commonwealth Games is amultinational, multi-sport event which

features competitions involving thousandsof elite athletes from members of 

the Commonwealth of Nations. Organizedevery four years, they are the third-largest

multi-sport event in the world, after theSummer Olympic Games and the Asian

Games.

As well as many Olympic sports, theGames also include some sports that areplayed mainly in Commonwealth

countries, such as lawn bowls, rugbysevens and netball.

The organizers signed aMemorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the United Nations

Environment Programmer toshow the intention to host a"sustainable games" and to take

the environment intoconsideration when constructing

and renovating venues.Thyagaraj Stadium is intended

to be a key example of environmentally-considered

construction.

Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi 

The baton’s journey symbolizes the unityand shared ideals of the Commonwealth

BIDDING

The two principal bids for the 2010Commonwealth Games were from Delhi, India and

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A ballot of memberswas held in November 2003 at the CommonwealthGames Federation General Assembly in Montego

Bay, Jamaica.

EXPANSION ANDDEVELOPMENT 

The ever-expanding network of the Delhi Metro.

Infrastructural development -The new city infrastructure,especially the new airport terminal, will also boosttourism and will make Delhi a hub for international

tourist.India has its advantages in the area of tourism, we have

many places that people can visit, this will get ourgovernment more revenue. So it really makes perfect

sense for the government and also for the tourist to have

the best of their times when they are in India for thecommonwealth games.

The multinational companies, Indian tourism, media, hotel industry and even

small scale manufacturers are benefiting from this sports extravaganza.

The Delhi government is also planning a program to teach English to those who

will be serving the tourists. These include auto rickshaw drivers, security

workers, waiters, porters, etc..

• A new state-of-the-art Games Village is being built by theDelhi Development Authority (DDA) with a focus onmaximizing athlete comfort.

• The village will be developed along the east bank of theRiver Yamuna.

• The site is off the National Highway 24 adjacent to theAkshardham temple at the Noida intersection.

• The Village will translate traditional Indian hospitality intostandards of comfort & excellence never seen before byparticipating teams.

• Created at a cost of USD 230.7 million, the Games Villagewill be spread over an area of 63.5 hectare.

Airports:Airports are being modernized, upgraded andexpanded.

The new terminal(T3) will give the airport acapacity of 37 million passengers a year.

The new terminal will have road access via a newsix lane road from NH-8 and will also have a

high-speed metro line to the city (Delhi Airportrail link) with special city check-in facilities.

The Delhi government has decided to construct 36 hospitals in NewDelhi, in the run-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Some of these hi-tech hospitals will be built in Yamuna area of Delhi.A fund of Rs.150 million has been planned for the construction of hospitals

Power Supply 

Delhi will see the availability of power enhanced to 7,000 MW from

the present 4,000 MW by theCommonwealth Games in 2010 In thecoming years, the city will get power

from the Damodar Valley Corp,National Thermal Power Corp, the

Dadri power plant, the Jhajhar plantand the Pragati power plant - thesetotal 4,240 MW.

Delhi as the necessities will be huge and money

generation in property business will be almost 100%..Experts in real estate market are commenting that theprices of these apartment will be on continuous increaselike moonlight during the mid of year 2010 as demand

will grow immensely.

Tata’s motors- Official vehiclesupplier for commonwealth 2010

games

Tata’s motors are now official vehicle supplier of commonwealthgames 2010, and it will provide complete transport services to

Queen’s Baton Relay. 

Organizing committee of commonwealth games ordered 1800vehicles for this huge event from Tata’s motors. During theoccasion, demand of jeeps, cars, and trucks will also be catered by

the company.

Tata’s plans to provide 1600 cars, which include Indica andIndigo, 100 sumo Grandes, 50 Safari SUV's, and 20 wingers for

the transport facility for delegates and their families.

These vehicles would get back to the company after the event andwill be sold as second hand vehicles as reported by the sources.

Criticism and controversies

DelaysIt was "reasonable to conclude that the current

situation poses a serious risk to theCommonwealth Games in 2010".

Indian Government found thatconstruction work on 13 out of the 19 sportsvenues was behind schedule.

Other Indian officials have also expressed

dismay at the ongoing delays but they havestated that they are confident that India willsuccessfully host the games and do so on

time.

The preparation for the Commonwealth Games delays over several venues at

Delhi due to security concerns. The Commonwealth Games is to be held at the

Capital of the country in the month of October this year.

The US and the Australia Government has also warned the Indian

Government of possible terror attack in the capital during this international

event.

The CWG organizers are also accepting that it is going to be a tough task for

them to systematize things on time.

BUDGET 

►Initially in the year 2006,The Union Cabinet of India has approvedthe common wealth games budget proposal for Rs 767 crore.

►But in nov 2009,the proposal was revised to Rs 1620 crore by theministry of youth affairs and sports and the same was approved by

the Union Cabinet.

►Now it is revealed that the total expenditure of common wealthgames will be more than 2000 crore i.e. 300% of the originalproposal.

The factors that have contributed toincrease in the amounts proposed in the

revised estimates were :Inclusion of new items that are essential for thesuccessful delivery of the Games but were notprovided in the initial budget of the organizingcommittee (OC), namely City Operations;

Sponsorship and T.V. Rights; Security ; andTicketing.

Change in the scope of the work and cost escalationin respect of Accommodation; Catering, Opening &Closing Ceremonies, Rent for Office of OC.

The number of Volunteers has gone up to nearly30,000 and hence the cost of accreditation, catering,uniform, etc., on this account has increased.

IMPACT 

On the dark side the ‘beautification’ has: 

►demolished hundreds of homes

►the ‘repatriation’ of Delhi’s beggars has beenseen as a silly act of pretending poverty doesn’t

exist and portraying Delhi as Shanghai.

INDIA Plans Massive Securityfor 2010 Common Wealth

Games

In an effort to tighten security arrangements ahead of 

the 2010 Commonwealth Games here, the Centre hassanctioned creation of 5,000 additional posts in Delhi

Police.

In preparation for the Games and to promote security

at major tourist destinations, Indian states will bedeploying a force of "tourist police" far before the

Games begin
