February 2015 Commodores Message: As noted in my previous Commodore's Message, I asked you to keep your minds open and your calendars free. I hope this is the case. During the latter part of January and beginning in February, we are starting to roll out some new events at the BYC. By the time this edition of the WindWord hits your mailboxes, we will have already had our Þrst Sunday brunch at the Club. That's right, we're bringing brunch back! We are hopeful that these once-a-month Sunday brunches area both a fun and affordable option for our Members. In addition, we will be introducing First on Second: First Friday Cocktail Parties at the Club. What's this? Thanks for asking. It is an opportunity for Members to come down to the club the Þrst Friday of every month to mix and mingle with old friends and hopefully make some new. The Club will be hosting (that means free) hors d'oeuvres, appetizers or nibbles, (whatever you want to call them), from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. We will be offering drink specials as well. Don't want to come by yourself, bring a guest. As a Member, you are allowed up to eight guests at time. We will also be introducing Thursday-is-the-new- Friday Social Hours. The Social Hours (aka "Happy Hour") will take place on, well Thursdays, and will feature afternoon drink and food specials. Check your Scuttlebutts and the Club bulletin boards for more information. As Hallmark reminds us, February is the month of all things hearts and cupid. In keeping with that spirit, the Club will be hosting a Bubble Lounge -inspired cocktail party on Friday, February 13th. Yes, the BYC will be the Þrst in town to celebrate Valentine's Day. The event is free and there is no pressure to come as a couple. Come on down to the Club for food and drink specials as well as a special parting treat. February also brings the U.S Power Squadron Boating Course back to the club. Classes are Monday evenings from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The classes start February 9th and run through April 6th. Again, check your Scuttlebutts and the Club bulletin boards for more information. Cruise-outs continue and February's destination is Pittsburg Yacht Club. Cruise Directors, the Bohnets and the Radigans, have a fun weekend planned, so if you can make it please consider attending by water or by land. As with our January cruise-out to the Vallejo Yacht Club, land cruisers are welcomed and encouraged. And while I'm on the topic, a special thank you to Chris Bara and Mike Matthews for another great cruise-out to the VYC. Almost forty of our Members attended dinner on Friday night. It was great to see you all there! The above is by no means an exhaustive list of all that is going on at the Club for February or, for that matter, the rest of the year. As dates get closer and plans are conÞrmed, I will be sure to let you know. Until then, see you at the Club. Christine Machado Commodore

Mike Mathews and Chris Bara hosted the January 2015 Benicia Yacht Club cruise-out to the Vallejo Yacht Club. Six of our boats cruised on Friday, and were joined by over 20 land cruisers for a great evening and a Þne meal prepared by Chef Amy. As always, our Vallejo Yacht Club hosts were exceptional. Saturday morning, the group

boarded the ferry to San Francisco for lunch and shopping at Pier 39 and the Ferry Building,

before returning to Vallejo for serious appetizers and visiting in the lounge. On Sunday, after a leisurely breakfast at The Sardine Can, we departed in the dense

fog for our home ports. Thankfully, most of our boats had radar.

Come Cruise with us...

An apology to any of you whose articles did not make into last months WW. Biography’s for the candi-dates took up a bit of space in the last edition and we could not get all of the stories in, we have included your articles in this edition.

There is a lot of work that goes into getting the Wind Word to you. With each edition that I have done, it has gotten easier, though it is still very time consuming. I am hoping that there is a member out there that would consider coming on board to help with putting out the WW in 2015. I am willing to help you get started! I also encourage having a team to sell advertising to defray the cost of future editions.

With that said, I am concerned that the WW is set to go on line only. It has been a topic of discussion before my taking over for HR as Editor. My concern is for the many members who do not have internet access and those not familiar with the internet itself, that may not search for the BYC website and the Wind Word. Without the phone tree, our only news update to our members is the Scuttlebutt, also an

internet based informational blast.

It would be much more cost effective to post on line only. Would you go on line and read it? Would you miss getting this in the mail and reading it as a print material? Think about that and let the board know your thoughts about the Wind Word’s future.

Because of the low number of readership that we have, membership is just over 200, we are not in competition with other local newspapers and publications as far as advertising goes. I do believe that we could do a better job to gain advertisement with our low costs and help defray the cost of this paper. If you would like to advertise and would like more information, please feel free to contact me or the board about this matter. .... Contact Mike Mathews at 707-745-0610.

I will be accepting LETTERS TO THE EDITOR about the future of the WW and anything else that you would like to discuss.

As I mentioned before, I would love to hear from you. All articles will be considered for print though member and mariner related articles will take priority and preference.
