MARINA DEVELOPMENT There seems to be some misunderstanding amongst some members that the Board is about to borrow huge amounts of money and start building the clubhouse and marina tomorrow. This I can assure you is not the case. The Board has been diligently working for the sole purpose of gaining approval and permits for the marina development as originally approved by the members. This has been escalated by the government from what we were led to believe to be a simple submission to a full EES (Environmental Effects Statement). The EES requires studies of many areas that may be affected by our proposed works. Water and sand movement, fossils, marine ecology, traffic flow, etc. These take time and have to be thoroughly checked and reported by qualified personnel. I am pleased to report that we have made significant headway having finalised reports on the major items and are now concentrating on stage two which is the smaller survey items such as, land and visual assessment, cliff stability, noise assessment, air assessment, traffic management to name a few. Cost estimates associated with stage two are being reviewed and quotations are being sought for known work necessary to complete the Planning Permit application stage. These costs will be presented at the members Half Yearly General Meeting on October 15th. Any development of this magnitude will be supported with a sound financial plan and will not be executed without further member approval. This of course is part of the overall plan, but first things first. We must complete the EES and gain our permit approval. As caretakers of our land it is very important we demonstrate to our landlords that we intend to upgrade our facilities and improve the usage for members and the public and to secure a maximum lease to cover our investments. This is an exciting stage for BMYS and it will take time to mature. We must show vision for the future to ensure we retain our facility and that it will be sustainable for decades to come. On a sad note two of our members have passed away recently. Past Commodore Peter Barnes will be sadly missed for his calm approach to board matters and his passion and input into the marina project. Brian Simcock was a hard worker for the Social committee and his input to social activities will be missed. My condolences to Margaret and Sandra. I sincerely hope you both remain associated with club and enjoy club activities with your friends. Brian McNaughton Commodore

Commodore's Comments

The past months have been a busy time at the club with several major events being held. The Annual Fishing Lecture Night was supported by 150 members and guests who enjoyed presentations from Shaun Furtire of “Think Big Charters” and club member Max Trist.

The Ladies Cocktail Party was a huge success with 170 attending the night. The decorations by Marina were amazing and painstakingly prepared for all to enjoy. Trudy did a great job arranging raffle prizes and being MC for the event. The emails and calls Paul received praising the night was very encouraging.

Annual presentation night at the club is always a great event. With comedian Greg Champion putting in a stellar performance (nearly outdone by Paul’s Irish jokes) members and guests had a memorable night.

Congratulations to Brian Willis for winning our major JR Kerr Trophy and to all the other category winners. Thanks to Dennis Parnell for compiling all Kerr Points for the year.

Father’s Day luncheon is well booked and fast approaching is the popular Grand Final day, a day to dress up in your footy club colours and enjoy a pie with sauce whilst watching the footy highlight of the year.

MARINA DEVELOPMENTThere seems to be some misunderstanding amongst some members that the Board is about to borrow huge amounts of money and start building the clubhouse and marina tomorrow.

Vale - Peter Francis “Barnsey” Barnes

Peter Barnes was born on 7 December 1944 and died in Brighton Cabrini Hospital on Sunday 25 August 2013 after a long and courageous fight against cancer.

Peter was born in Boort in western Victoria. He lived with his parents and his two brothers and sister on the family farm near Boort and attended the State School at Yando, a small town near Boort. Of the fourteen students who went to school at Yando, ten of these students were Peter’s brothers, his sister and first cousins. Later, he went to Boort HES until year 10, then Caulfield Grammar School for year 11 and 12 as a boarder, and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics at Monash University.

Following graduation he joined Price Waterhouse in his chosen career as a Chartered Accountant. One of the reasons he gave for not taking on farming like his two brothers was that he hated roast lamb. He used to say that as a boy he was given roast lamb twice a day - hot at midday

and cold at night! Peter then joined a smaller firm Butler Fanning where he became a partner. In 1988 he moved to Moorabbin as a sole practitioner. Peter sold his business in 2005, went into semi-retirement and continued to work for several years from his home in Mentone.

Peter was a loving and much loved family man; he married Margaret in 1969 and set up home in Moorabbin, later moving to their current home in Mentone. They reared two daughters - Belinda and Fiona, and are proud grandparents of Georgia and Isabel.

Peter joined BMYS in September 1997 and very quickly and enthusiastically involved himself in Club activities. Commonly known as ‘Barnsey’ to his friends at BMYS, Peter was elected to the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Club in 2000, Rear Commodore in 2002, and Vice Commodore in 2004, while remaining Treasurer of the Club until he was elected Commodore in May 2007, a position he held with distinction until his retirement from the Board in May 2010. He was the principal architect of the Business/Financial Plan that lead to the rebuilding of the Clubhouse in 2003 and changing the legal format of the Club from a Co-Operative to that of a Company limited by guarantee. His considerable management and financial skills have largely contributed to the sound financial position that BMYS enjoys today.

Peter was very well liked and respected by fellow Board members and the membership generally. As Commodore at

the time, he will be especially remembered for his vision and foresight in the launching of the concept plan in 2008 for a proposed Safe Harbour and Marina on the existing BMYS site, a plan which is designed to ensure the long-term future and viability of the Club. During his tenure as Commodore he also oversaw the 50th Anniversary celebrations of BMYS, a notable milestone in the history of the Club. He continued to serve the Club as its Immediate Past Commodore until May 2013, providing wise counsel to the Board with his long experience at the helm of the Club’s administration.

Barnsey loved boats and participated in all Club activities. He considered one of his greatest sporting achievements was taking second place in the Commodore’s NavRally in 2004. His fishing exploits may not have won any major prizes but he was especially proud of landing a 5.2 kg snapper under the tutelage of Ian Jones.

In recognition of his long and meritorious service to the Club, ‘Barnsey’ was awarded an Honorary Life Membership of BMYS at the Presentation Night on 10 August 2013. He will long be remembered at BMYS for his quiet, humourous, yet tenacious nature along with his deep love for the Club. He will be sadly missed.

Peter is survived by his wife Margaret, daughters Belinda and Fiona, and grand-children Georgia and Isabel.

Item 3 – Annual Report:

3-1. Financial ReportReport published in the Annual Report.

The Treasurer Phil Goodier referred to the 2012-2013 Financial Report, which had been distributed electronically as part of the Annual Report. A hard copy version has also been available from the Club Manager.

Highlights of the Financial Report were:• Income of $778,648 was down on the previous year ($835,528).

• Reasons for the changes in income include a decrease in bar sales and a reduction in Clubhouse hire charges (down around $35,000 with fewer external functions and weddings).

• Joining fees were also down on the previous year with a lower intake of new members.

• Of note was that the income received from the members’ unused bar levy was$37,496 which was up on the previous year.

• Overall costs were well held with an increase of around $16,000 over the previous year.

• The Club has no debt and with funds on deposit earning interest of $39,665 in the year under review. The accounts also include accruals for dredging and for arrears in the increases to lease payments which could apply.

• The Club is in a quite strong position in terms of the cash held. (Note we need to hold reasonable cash reserves to meet larger capital expenditure items such as major refurbishment to our Clubhouse or the building of a completely new Clubhouse).

• Expenditure on the Safe Harbour /Marina and Clubhouse projects were not expensed but capitalised .The Marina project is shown as an asset. During the year expenditure on the Safe Harbour/Marina was $23,118(excluding GST).

• Overall the Club has had a reasonably good financial year with a profit of $121,596 vs. $193,969 last year.

• Club member Max Trist commented that given that a lot of clubs around the area were struggling financially that the Board should be congratulated on the financial result. This comment was acknowledged by the Treasurer.

Q. The accounts show that the costs of producing On Deck are about 75% more this year compared to last year. Has the Club considered distributing On Deck electronically?A. The cost increase has to do with the magazine now being an all colour higher

quality production. The preference appears to be for the magazine to be mailed. Within a month of publication the current edition of On Deck is placed on the Club website and past copies are also available on the Club website.

Q. Security was about $1000 this year compared to around $4000 for 2012. Is there an explanation for this?A. There was higher expenditure in 2012 associated with some security upgrading and in this year normal expenditures apply.

There being no further questions, it was moved to accept the Financial Report:

Moved: Max Trist Seconded: John Giuliano Carried

3-2. Commodores ReportReport published in the Annual Report.

• Gave a summary of the major projects and other activities within the Club.

In regard to the Safe Harbour/Marina project:

(1) The Club is currently waiting on the restructure of the Central Coastal Board (CCB). We have had several positive meetings with them and also about the reclassification of our Club to a regional facility. This would be helpful but is not a mandatory step. This is why we have not been actually ‘flat out’ but we have done some work in the past 12 months and have kept the spending of money to a minimum ($23,118).

(2) Yachting Victoria (YV) has formed a subcommittee to look at all the club infrastructure projects around the bay including our Marina and we are members of this. The group will report to the Government on difficulties clubs are experiencing progressing projects like ours.

(3) At this point in terms of what we do with the Marina we would like to see both these (CCB and YV) actions completed.

(4) We have done the minimum on the EES during the past year. It is taking a lot longer than we expected. We could do this quicker but it would take considerably more funds if were engaging more external consultants.

Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron LimitedMinutes of the 54th Annual General Meeting of the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron Limited held on Tuesday 21 May 2013 at 8 PM.

The meeting was held in the Squadron’s Clubhouse on The Foreshore, Beach Road, Beaumaris.

Page 6: Commodore's Comments - Beaumaris · Commodore's Comments The past months have been a busy time at the club with several major events being held. The Annual Fishing Lecture Night was

6 On Deck – September/October 2013

By doing a lot of the work in house we have made significant savings.

(5) We continue to focus on the ‘show stoppers’ and to progress these - again with expenditure being carefully managed.

(6) We are hoping by the end of June/July 2013 that the first draft of the new CCB Five Year Plan will be released and that we will become a major project within that and this will facilitate the progress of our project.

(7) We have said previously that we would have to spend more than the original budget of $350,000. How much over that amount we need to spend is a difficult estimate. We continue to be very aware about expenditure on the project and doing it in the most cost effective way.

(8) The next steps in progressing the EES will focus on the EES methodology; revising the project schedule; setting up another group of TRG meetings; complete consultants’ briefs; planning; traffic study; cliff stability (already done this); and cultural heritage (not expected to be too much of an issue as we are situated on reclaimed land).

(9) In summary this is where currently are with the project. It has been difficult and we are aware that there is frustration in regard to progress. We do believe that doing the project in the way we have to date is the most effective approach particularly in regard to costs.

In regard to the Clubhouse project:(1) Attention was drawn to the draft drawings of the new Clubhouse which were on display at the meeting. As pointed at the most recent half yearly general meeting the Clubhouse is part of the overall master plan for the Club but we have decided to pull it out and focus in more detail on it.

(2) The development of these plans follows an audit of the existing building and this highlighted the need for major renovations with expenditure up to $3m required.

(3) The Board has developed several versions of these drawings and those on display are the latest version and include input from some 30 members. No estimate of costs has been completed.

(4) The new Clubhouse is seen as a long term project and constructive feedback is sought. We would like to send details to members but are unsure at this point how this could be done given the size of the drawings.

(5) A further consideration here is the need to complete soil tests given we would be building on reclaimed land and we are uncertain as to what is there. The results of these soil tests could add significantly to the overall cost of the new building.

(6) Another part of this process is that we will have to have a new lease in place. Our current lease expires on 30 June 2018.We are aware that our landlord, DSE, will require our lease to be renewed prior to any works being undertaken either with the Marina or a new Clubhouse. Renewals of existing leases now require more factors than previously applied to be considered. We need to be mindful of these factors so our Club is not adversely impacted when we are negotiating our new lease arrangements. Under the current guidelines lease periods can be 21-99 years. We would like a 99 year lease but that would be probably highly unlikely for us.

(7) Brian McNaughton added that the approach is to have a plan that includes costs so that a pathway forward can be evaluated. There is no intention by the Board to commit to borrowing money, undertaking any works etc. without proper consultation with the wider membership.

Q. Does this mean that the proposed Clubhouse has been taken away from the Marina project as a separate entity or is it still part of the overall Marina project?A. If the Marina project fell over which we now don’t think will happen we still need to do something about the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse has about 5-8 years of life remaining if that and we need do something about this. Yes we are doing it separately but it is really part of the total project.

Q. Does this mean that if the Marina project happened to fail we are still going down that path (of a new Clubhouse)? Or are we doing it the other way around so that we are not going for the building before we undertake the Marina?A. That’s not our intention. We can’t predict the future but if the Marina for some reason didn’t go ahead then we still need a Clubhouse and we need to do the work on that. The Marina was seen as paying for the Clubhouse but if that isn’t the case then we need to understand how this could be financed. We have recently formed a finance sub-committee to commence looking into the stand alone financing of a new Clubhouse. In addition we are reviewing the Club’s Business Strategy and Plans

(the previous 10 year plan concluded last year) and this is seen as complementing any financial plans for the Clubhouse. We would be looking at what possible increased cash flow could be generated from a bigger and better Clubhouse, for example, from the capacity for larger weddings and from dedicated training facilities that could be rented. A new Clubhouse might possibly (there is no guarantee here) attract a grant on the basis that we have dedicated training facilities that could be used for example for power boat training.

Q. It is commendable that a lot of the work on the Marina and Clubhouse is being done in-house but delays are adding to the cost of the project in the order of $0.8M to $1.0M per year. You have to increase your construction costs by 4% per year – this is the amount that is allowed in budgeting for project building costs. We need to keep that in mind. Perhaps it is timely that we now look at revised costing for the whole project?A. Yes I agree. On the other hand we do think that some of the costs could come down because there is less work available for contractors and some indication that construction costs could be less in some areas, for example, for our rock wall. We think the quotes we previously obtained were completed more in boom times and that costs could possibly be more favourable now but not necessarily across the whole project.

Q. Have we engaged quantity surveyors at this stage to look at the costs of both the Marina and Clubhouse projects?A. No we haven’t. We have had costs provided by companies that do that sort of work. That is how we built up our original cost estimates. We can’t spend that sort of money until we get approval as there is no gain at this point. We probably do need however to get some costing on the Clubhouse once we are closer to understanding what we want to do.

Q. What is the size (floor area) of the new Clubhouse?A. Upstairs and downstairs together are approximately 1930 square metres and the existing building is around 1400 square metres. Ross Popplewell commented that had we spent a lot more money in the past 12-18 months we would not be further ahead with the Marina because of the inability to overcome delays in progressing various elements of the project through the different parts of government.

.In addition there have been some big recent changes in the structure of government departments and this is likely to add delays to us obtaining the

Page 7: Commodore's Comments - Beaumaris · Commodore's Comments The past months have been a busy time at the club with several major events being held. The Annual Fishing Lecture Night was

On Deck – September/October 2013 7

various approvals we require. We need to fit in with the timetable dictated by government and progress to date has been consistent with this situation.

Q. My question has to do just with the cost of the rock wall of around $5m – given the sort of profit we are making how long do we see it taking to pay that off?A. No - that is not how we see it working. The project is seen as self-funding with the $21M of costs being met through the leasing of wet and dry berths.

Q. How many of these were pre-sold and what interest did we have in this?A. I think it was around 50 of the wet berths and not sure of the number of dry ones. We stopped the sale of these until the project situation was clear. My view is that there is evidence of a lack of berths around the bay and selling these is not foreseen as an issue.

Q. Shouldn’t the process be before we spend more money to see if DSE will grant us a lease for more than 21 years?A. Yes - we are working on this. DSE have a formula about how they look at a new lease and what they require is to know what our agreed plans are. DSE would want to be assured that our business/finance plans are sound before granting a new lease.

Q. If we are going to get finance from the bank you are going to need the end value to have a profit in it. Do we know that the berths are for example only worth $15M and the costs are $21M and this is a show stopper that isn’t going to change?A. That is not the case and the evidence is the price of berths has gone up. There are examples around the bay that this continues to be the case.

Q. Would we have 50 members here who are going to come up with $150,000?A. That is a club with big berths. We have some big berths.

Q. Given that it is 5 years since costs were done I am wondering if the Board should revisit the feasibility of the project?A. Both construction and berth costs have gone up considerably. Once we obtain a permit we would need to sit down, address the feasibility study again, understand the costs and go back to members for confirmation.

Q. What is the estimate of costs going forward?

A. We can’t be exactly sure. We have spent $350,000. Maybe another $100,000 but with member involvement we can possibly keep this cost down.

Q. Given that we could possibly

end up spending $0.5 to $1.0M for the marina approval and it may not be economically feasible, have we considered that we should sacrifice the marina, that is, progress the Clubhouse given that we are told it is in such poor condition and that we spend our money only on the Clubhouse?A. One is paying for the other. We are confident that there will be a healthy demand for our marina berths that will outweigh construction cost increases. Wyndham Harbour is another example where there was recently a big demand for recently released berths. We don’t want to be spending thousand s of dollars to revisit the financial feasibility again at this time.

Q. I am concerned that the cost continues to rise and we have no certainty about what the cost could be getting to approval stage?A. When we first costed the project we didn’t include an EES which subsequently we were advised was required. Also, we will incur further costs as we go forward. It should be remembered that we have been charged by the members with obtaining a permit.

Q. (Club Member, Barry Stewart). There are quite a lot of people like me who are not in favour of the marina project. I am putting forward under Rule 24.1 of the Club Constitution that I would like you to consider, given the amount of money already spent on the project, members be given the opportunity as soon as possible to vote and confirm their support for the project and whether we spend any more money on it.A. We can’t do this as requested at this meeting. We can’t do a poll as requested now as the Club Constitution does not allow this.

(After further discussion it was pointed out by Barry Stewart that the vote was not being sought tonight but it was signalled that this would be progressed at a later time).

Q. My understanding was that the Clubhouse was going to be part of the Marina but is it now being shown as a separate entity?A. No it is not. We have to look at what we have here as the present building is in poor condition.

Q. Do you have in black and white from DSE that they will not renew the lease if we don’t fulfil certain requirements before our lease expires?A. No. We are however aware that pressure on other clubs has arisen as part of their lease renewals. There are published guidelines that apply in regard to leasing DSE controlled Crown land

and the factors that are taken into consideration. These would apply to BMYS.

3-3. FishingReport published in Annual Report.

Reference was made to the Annual Report and that it highlights the number of events available to new and other members. There have been some excellent events and it is not just about the fishing but the great camaraderie that pervades these and the Bermagui trip was excellent example. These events take quite a lot to organise and members were implored to get involved and not to just use the Club facilities. Members were also advised that ideas about the conduct of events are most welcome.

Members of the Fishing Committee were thanked for their efforts throughout the year. The Club Manager and Assistant Manager and staff were also thanked for their assistance to the Fishing Committee

Q. Is there something we can do to manage fishing events with the often inaccurate weather forecasts from the BOM? We have situations where the water is calm but have events cancelled because of the weather. Can we have someone to monitor it?A. Agree there is frustration around this. The Club has to ensure it does the right thing from a safety and insurance point of view. Following discussion, on balance there does not seem to be any options around this other than to closely monitor forecasts and advise changes as applicable and continue to follow our current rules.

Q. Why can’t we use our own hoses at the wash down bays?A. When we had the recent drought we had permission to operate these high pressure washing machines. These facilities are a cost to the Club and we need to recover our costs. The $2 fee is seen as modest and fair. In relation to refunds where the machine does not operate members are advised to speak with the Club Manager. It will help if the coins used are dry as the machines are then much less prone to malfunction.

3-4. CommunicationsReport published in Annual Report.

The cost per member of On Deck is around $5 per issue. It was hoped to make the production self-sufficient but we are a long way from this. Most of our advertising comes from small business which is generally doing it tough and money for advertising is limited. We have had two recent examples where commitments to advertise in On Deck were withdrawn and we were advised

Page 8: Commodore's Comments - Beaumaris · Commodore's Comments The past months have been a busy time at the club with several major events being held. The Annual Fishing Lecture Night was

8 On Deck – September/October 2013

that business financial conditions was the issue. On the other hand we have had some recent longer term commitments to advertise in On Deck.

Q. What measures are we using to gain advertising?A. Most of it is ‘word of mouth’. We don’t have the resources to really seek advertising. Members are requested to support businesses that advertise in On Deck as this as seen a good approach.

Q. Having a Facebook page for BMYS has been raised previously as being worthwhile. What is the current situation?A. It was looked at for the website. It does require a lot of monitoring. We are aware of another boating club that has regretted putting Facebook on their website. We currently have no plans to have a Facebook page.

Ian Jones complimented Hugh Videion on the work he puts into On Deck and for producing an outstanding publication. This was supported by the meeting with acclamation.

3-4. SocialReport published in Annual Report. Social Director was unable to attend the meeting.

3.5 BoatingReport published in On Deck.

Boating activities this past year have enjoyed both improved participation and generally better weather. New members have been added to the Boating Committee and this has helped its overall effectiveness. It has been pleasing to see the work undertaken by Brendan O’Donoghue and Roger Hartley in acquiring the knowledge to successfully conduct NavRallies and their good work was acknowledged. The Committee has been asked to add more training as part of its activities and this is to be progressed. Keith Owen advised that he was stepping down as Boating Director because of work and other commitments. He thanked John Firth and the Board for their support and Brian Willis who acted for him during his absence during the year.

3-6. SiteReport published in Annual Report.

Ross Popplewell (Site Director) thanked the members of the Site Committee for their efforts during the past 12 months. The functional roles that have been established with the committee are working well and backup has been added so that we have more flexibility. Rodney Savage was thanked for his efforts acting during Ross’ absence which included organising the September 2012 Working Bee. It was

most pleasing to see the good numbers attending the April 2013 Working Bee with around 17% of the Club membership present. It was acknowledged that a lot of members contribute to support and maintenance around the Club and these efforts are greatly appreciated. Bayside City Council and CityWide Gardens have been assisting the Club with plants at no cost. Geoff Ellsworth and Peter Christie were thanked for all the work that they complete around the Club. Ross thanked John Firth and Peter Barnes for their assistance and Paul Morgan and his staff for the assistance they have provided in site matters.

Q. We used to publish a list of attendees at working bees in On Deck. Is it worthwhile to do this again?A. We will look into it.

Boating Report - Brian Willis

Hopefully the warmer and less windy weather is not too far away and we can start to enjoy activities out on the water again.Maybe as you hide inside in these grey winter days you can dream of the ski weekend at Eildon in sunny February that we have planned. Please note that this will be over the weekend 15/16 February NOT the previous weekend as it appears on the BMYS Fixture Card.

Knot and Rope NightThis event was conducted as usual in early July. Numbers were down on last year and maybe the wild weather kept some folks at home. Ian Wall from Boating Victoria was again the guest presenter and he covered a lot of information about knots and ropes. Many of those attending at the end of the night demonstrated good skills in splicing ropes.

Ian again highlighted that there is an interesting website – www.animatedknots.com – Animated

Knots by Grog. This shows animations of popular knots used for fishing, boating and other activities involving knots.

Animated Knots by Grog is claimed to be simply the best and most comprehensive teaching and reference tool for boaters, climbers, fishermen, scouts and hobbyists. You can watch as knots tie themselves in simple step-by-step photo animations. There are Apps for iPhone, Android devices and iPad. The cost is around $4 plus and as Club members is good App to have.

Remember when buying rope for your boat focus on quality and not price alone.

Special thanks to Noel McNicol and Mel Carney of the Boating Committee for their support for the Knot and Rope Night.

Sail Past and Open Day Sunday 13 OctoberThe theme for this year’s Sail Past and Open Day is –Family Favourite Movie. Dress up your boat and your crew or BOTH to represent this year’s theme. This is one of the biggest days on the club’s calendar. Have your boat and crew on the water at the club by 9.00am. There are great prizes on offer and this is always a fun day for skippers and families and all attending. Please register with the club for lunch as bookings for lunch are essential.

Marine Radio Operator’s VHF Certificate of Proficiency (MROVCP) CourseThe Boating Committee will be conducting this course over three nights in November (Tuesdays 12th, 19th and 26th) commencing at 7.30pm. Each session time is around 2 hours and at the BMYS clubhouse. Tuesday26th November is the revision and exam night. Cost is $165 and this covers the handbook from the Australian Maritime College, examination marking (by the same body) and provision of the licence which is required to operate this equipment.

This is great opportunity to gain a Marine Operator’s VHF Licence. For further details see the flyer in this edition of On Deck.

Please note the registration requirements for the course and this will need to be completed prior to the course as numbers are limited.

Nav Rally NewsThe BMYS Commodores Cup due to be run on July 14th was unfortunately cancelled due to a strong wind warning. A range of entries from BMYS and several other clubs had promised a good day. The course to be run was one of the longer routes used in rallies and runs all the way to Sandringham. This course will probably be used for the next Commodore’s Cup.

The club calendar has been reorganised and the three major Nav Rallies run by BMYS are scheduled for Autumn 2014. This creates a “Nav Rally Season” and we are excited about the prospect of better weather and a focus on Navigation Rallies during this period.

Page 10: Commodore's Comments - Beaumaris · Commodore's Comments The past months have been a busy time at the club with several major events being held. The Annual Fishing Lecture Night was

10 On Deck – September/October 2013

Now is a great time to start planning and getting organised if you are interested in entering the events next year. If you are keen to form a team or participate please get in touch with the Boating Committee to find out more details. We are planning to publish information about how to plot courses and prepare for navigation rallies so stay tuned. We can also assist with information about free tools to plot courses and how to get started.

BMYS enjoys having crews from other clubs participate in our rallies. There is also an open

invitation to all BMYS members to enter Nav Rallies run at other clubs around the Bay.

Other Upcoming EventsPlease see the flyers on the Club website advertising details of the Club’s Fire Safety Night (Thursday 3 October). This will include a talk on marine fire fighting and fire safety by Marine Safety/MFB. Also there will be the opportunity to use fire extinguishers to put out actual fires and for participants to purchase discounted fire extinguishers from the CFA.

Year Long Snapper Season For many years pinkie snapper to 45 cm have been the mainstay of winter fishing but this year has been different. Several keen members have caught snapper to 7 kg on a regular basis in 62 ft of water south of Ricketts Point. They are not the only ones! Reports of large fish have come from Carrum, Frankston and Mount Martha. Have these large fish always been available or is it that anglers are more willing to endure the cold conditions in what are demonstrably better equipped boats? Side scanning sounders may also have helped in locating isolated fish holding structures such as the wreck of the cruiser (Wedding Ring) in our local waters. Again the willingness to share information by successful anglers amongst others has increased member success rate and highlights the benefits of membership of such as great club as B.M.Y.S. The large fish caught have been in excellent condition and show early signs of spawning in the months to come.

Fisheries have reported excellent recruitment of snapper last year which will be used to review whether any future changes are required to size and bag limits. There is no doubt whatsoever that we have a world class snapper

fishery on our doorstep that each of us should protect for present and future generations. Fisheries compliance officers have been active over the winter and the local press has highlighted several examples of successful prosecutions of fishermen with excess numbers of snapper.

Members in the News Geoff Smith has now retired from the Police Force. His outstanding career has been highlighted in the press and in radio interviews.

Richard Brabner must be one of BMYS’s most travelled anglers. His tales of remote locations and marvellous fishing made for fascinating listening and itchy feet.

Gavin Jones and Tony McLeod have joined several other members in registering big winter snapper. Perhaps we should introduce an off season snapper trophy for these hardy frost bitten members.

Peter Boyd and crew have crossed the Bay to St Leonards to record excellent whiting catches on several occasions.

Dave Bell and Chris Demetrious have swapped committees. Dave joined the fishing while Chris takes an excellent set of skills to the site committee. Chris will continue as co-delegate to the GFAV.

Former member Don Carruthers has turned 90. He still fishes actively and recently won a couple of prizes at the Sandy Anglers Lake Tyers trip.

So successful is Predrag Stojic at squid fishing that members now come into Southern Sports and ask for a Drago Jig. Last retail order was for 60 and they sold out in a week.

Able Day July 27 What an incredible day this was! Some 38 clients and their carers took part in a range of activities including fishing from the pier. To see the joy on such happy faces and the exuberance displayed was uplifting experience for all members who helped. Hundreds of photographs were taken of a squid, a gar fish and a sea star. Catches for all of us is commonplace caused great delight. Special thanks to Jan Flude’s team and the BMYS staff!

This was BMYS at its finest!!

New Products Side scanning sounders are now commonplace and their cost is within range of modest budgets.

The range of squid jigs available is constantly increasing. Some jigs cost more than an entry level spinning reel.

Surf fishing is undergoing some interesting changes. The days of sticking a couple of 4 metre rods in the sand and chucking 5 oz sinkers are slowly being replaced by gear that is designed for more mobile angling. Light weight rods, long cast reels, quality braid and a wide range of surf lures are available for anglers who want to strap on a back pack or bum bag and walk the beaches. A bottle of water, a few lures, some leader material is all that is needed.

Fishing Location – Hampton Jetty This pier is probably one of the least fished locally. Turn off Beach road at Jetty Road, turn right and past the gate to Sandy Yacht Club and park near the historic kiosk. The pier extends north south into the Sandy Harbour. Bream, pinkies and mullet can be

expected. There are also tales of a huge resident mulloway that must now wear a mouth full of hooks. Plastic and blades are the way to go with early a.m. and late p.m. being the best times

Fishing Ideas Trolling speed is always a discussion point. Fast moving pelagic such as tuna require a fast speed, whereas ambush feeders like flathead and barramundi the slower the better. Trout also seem to like a very slow speed. Lake Dartmouth anglers tow fish boxes, buckets or drogues behind their boats to slow troll speed.

Boga fish grips are another way of landing a fish that is increasingly popular. Grips range in cost from a few dollars professional instruments costing several hundreds. Many J.V. fishing shows use these groups to handles, display and release fish.

New Fishing Competitions- Spring Sundays The fishing has now abandoned monthly competitions. This season your committee is trialling 3 Sunday competitions on September 8, October 27

and November 24. They start at midnight Saturday and finish a midnight Sunday (24 hours). The spread of prizes and the elements of luck have been increased. Prizes are for heaviest fish, heaviest lure caught fish and 4 lucky weight prizes. The junior and ladies prizes continue. The fishing director will seal all lucky weights pre competition. Spring Sundays are not championship events. The member participation rate will be reviewed at the end of the season. Weigh in sheets have been modified to reflect the change from 2 days to one day.

Late News Mick Hudson tells of his brother Dan’s dog chewing a $2 squid jig. You guessed it! The vet’s bill was over $400.

Predrag Stojic continues to stun locals with his catches from our jetty. 7.7 kg, 5.6 kg and 4.2 kg are some recent additions to his now extensive repertoire.

There is no truth in the rumour that boat parking fees will be collected at the wedding ring snapper mark although fenders are highly recommended.

B.M.Y.S. G.F.A.V. ReportThere were positive signs that BMYS GFAV affiliated anglers were more active in the past season. Members visited the South West for bluefin and several makos. Ross Moore returned Tag and Release cards to win the yearly game fishing trophy. Tyrone O’Connor a regular game fishing winner had mixed success at Bermagui with several makos and yellowfin.

Unfortunately the week BMYS chose for its annual trip to Bermagui proved to be action free but not for a lack of trying. The weather was excellent and all 20 participants reported a great time but no captures or tags and releases were recorded. Better luck next year!

It is pleasing to report that Chris Demetrious has enthusiastically become the second BMYS delegate and his future contribution to game fishing in BMYS will be certainly significant.

Thanks to the GFAV executive for its contribution to the sport of game fishing.

A pretty good turnout of dedicated fishos and guests turned up to the clubrooms to hear Shaun Furtiere of “Think Big” Charters give us his take on fishing Westernport for the big Snapper and occasional Gummie that are his specialty. After a couple of convivial sherbets the crowd of about 130 settled in to listen to Shaun’s words of wisdom. He began with an interesting take on the migratory patterns of the big snapper, postulating that perhaps they travel up the eastern side of French Island rather that the accepted theory that they come in the Western Channel and make their way up past Stony point & Hastings. In any event Shaun tells us that it’s the relatively shallow (8 -12 meter) depths they are seeking in the upper reaches of the bay. There, the relatively warmer water of the mud flats sees an abundance of the crunchy critters (mussels, crabs and assorted crustaceans) on which the big reds like to feed. His advice was to fish the run off tides which saw the fish falling back into the relatively narrow channels as the tide receded or to fish the flood as the depth increased over the warmer mud & sand banks in the top end of the

waterway. Whilst he conceded that a lot of good fish are taken in the deep waters of the major channels he is convinced that the shallower, warmer waters provide the best big fish opportunities and warned anglers not to discount the “lesser” channels like “Gentle Annie”, “Tooradin” and “Boulton”. Using heavier gear than we normally would in Port Phillip he rigged up with 30lb braid and a 5 meter 40lb mono leader, Ezy Rig above a fluro bead to stop the Ezi Rig fouling on the swivel, to which a 60lb mono trace led to a snelled double 4/0 or 5/0 hook arrangement. Major lead requirements to keep the bait near the bottom, getting heavier (up to 20 ounces!) as the flows increased toward the bottom of the bay and the deeper water. Bait preference is for freshly caught squid, cleaned and cut into circles lightly pinned to the hooks. Alternatively a strip bait also lightly pinned often proves deadly.Shaun pointed out good squid grounds on his “Mud Map” up on the whiteboard with shallow water areas just north of “Lysarts”, further south between Crib Point & Stony Point and on the Eastern side of French Island down around

Elizabeth Island. Our erstwhile Fishing Committee Chairman Tim Hipkin graciously thanked Shaun for his contribution and presented him with a BMYS Japara for his troubles to the all round applause and appreciation of the gathering. The fishing committee will be canvassing members to gauge interest levels in comp on Western Port, so think about it and let it be known how you feel about that idea.We were then treated to a Max Trist special covering his adventures at Roper River on the big and plentiful Barra. Max is obviously a convert and his enthusiasm for the area was obvious. “Millions” of fish caught (and released) in no time at all and a great time had by all. You can even catch 1.25 meter barra on a $35 reel, which is just as well considering the $6,000 per week (plus booze!) fare. I’m certain it is well worth the money aboard the magnificent “Iron Lady” – thank you Max (he didn’t get a Japara.)Supper was provided at the end of it all and we thank all staff for their assistance. Supper was followed by the “Buy, Swap & Sell” event which, although less well patronised by sellers than on previous occasions was, nonetheless considered a success. We will be promoting that event more heavily next time around. On a more sombre note it was noted that the noise levels during the presentations by our invited guests did display a lack of respect for both speakers and for the audience in general. We will be changing the set up of the venue next time in a effort to stop the “back of the room banter.” Please consider others when we put on these events and keep quiet until the show’s over.

Hi everybodyLet me begin my report by saying how saddened we all were by the passing of one of our dedicated and deeply respected committee members, Brian Simcox. Brian together with his wife Sandra have been on the social committee for several years, and no job was ever too much trouble for either of them. Our thoughts are with Sandra as she moves forward without her partner, but Sandra knows that we are all here for her, to help her through her journey. And of course, there is no way I’m letting her leave the committee.

SEPTEMBER -FATHERS DAY SPIT ROAST

A spit roast lunch was held on Sunday 1st September to celebrate Father’s day. This event was well attended and all Dad’s enjoyed themselves. This will become a regular event for the Club Calender, as the social committee believes that both Mum’s and Dad’s need to be spoilt occasionally.

UP COMING SOCIAL EVENTS TO PLAN FOR: SEPTEMBER 28th - GRAND FINAL DAYJoin in the fun and frivolity of Grand Final Day. Come dressed in your favourite football colours. Pies and sausage rolls will be available on the day. A great place for the family to watch that one day in September. Try your luck at guessing first goal kicker, the Norm Smith medallist and the winning team and margin. The annual Children’s hand ball competition will be conducted at

half time with wonderful prizes on offer.

OCTOBER 5th - LEGENDS NIGHT BY MARK ANDREWSAfter a two year absence Mark Andrews is coming back to BMYS to perform his Legends Show. This is a great evening and you should not miss it. The night is booking out quickly, so don’t be disappointed. Call the Club NOW!

NOVEMBER 5th

- MELBOURNE CUP DAYA reminder that the club is open on Melbourne Cup day.So come down with your family and friends, bring a platter or have a barbeque and enjoy a great day. The club provides a happy and safe ambience for young ones, who will be able to amuse themselves, leaving you plenty of time to watch the races and win on the sweeps running throughout the day.You will be welcomed with a glass of champagne on arrival, and your efforts in dressing for the occasion will be well rewarded with prizes for best dressed and best hat to be won. Our social committee work hard to put on several functions throughout the year. Your attendance is our greatest reward.

DECEMBER 1st - CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PARTYThis year the Children’s Christmas Party is on Sunday 1st December. This event always draws a large crowd, as it’s a wonderful family day.The usual gang will be there, including Santa, so pencil the date in to your Calender. I look forward to catching up with you socially. - Cheers, John Bacon

Ladies Cocktail NightThe annual ladies cocktail party was held on Saturday 3rd August and was attended by 170 Ladies. This year’s theme was “Madhatters Tea Party”. Reckon I must have been mad to dress up like that, don’t know

what possessed me! Everyone got in the spirit of the theme and we saw some absolutely wonderful hats and there were also prizes for the best hats!

Congratulations to Helen

Regester, Gay Beach , Allison Ibrharm and all the other winners. Thanks to everyone for dressing up and making it a spectacular night. A very big Thank You to all our generous sponsors who supplied bountiful prizes for the raffle that seemed to go on and on. The sponsors were: Pearl Rock and Koko Ribbon both from Black Rock, Hinkler Books, Designer Brands Makeup, WA McNeil for the set of sheets, Absolute Storage for many gifts. Lastly a heartfelt thank you to Gail Anderson who donated, on the night, a Book about “Black Caviar” and two tickets to Oaks Day, very thoughtful, thanks Gail! Many thanks to Peter O’Leary and Gary Viner for selling the raffle tickets.

Thanks guys a great job!The room was dressed imaginatively, cleverly and most magically by Marina, who put in many hours of her own time and spared no effort in creating an absolute “Wonderland” from lighting, decorating, guard at the front door, cup cakes and right down to the tiny faces on the beautiful flowers in the flower boxes that she actually made. I hope that each and every lady took in the beautiful details that Marina created on the table tops. She is one clever girl! So a huge “Thank you Very Much” to Marina who put in a tremendous effort! Well, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves, like I did and I’m looking forward to seeing you all next year! - Trudy Pegram.

A Tribute to Brian “Simmo” Simcox

Brian Simcox, a long time member of the BMYS and Social Committee member passed on 25th July, 2013. Whether you knew Brian from attending social events, or buying a raffle ticket from Brian and Sandra on Friday Nights, this is our tribute to celebrate the life and times of our friend Brian.

Brian Robert Simcox was born on the 26 April 1945 in McKinnon to Pauline and Robert Simcox.

As an only child, most of Brian’s child hood was spent living in Evasham Road Cheltenham where he attended Cheltenham primary school and later secondary school at Sandy Tech and then onto Caulfield Tech where he followed his artistic flair.

Brian’s parents were the operators of the Caltex service station on Nepean Hwy Mentone, right opposite the Mentone Fire station. There Brian was put to work as the petrol boy helping his mum and dad. This is where his passion for cars and motors ignited.

Brian’s first car was a beautiful FJ Holden, he loved his cars and had dozens over the years, but his favourites all had a thumping big V8 engine, the inner petrol head was revealed.

Brian was a fit young man in his days with his love for playing football, basketball and the tough gruelling sport of table tennis. Brian carried the nick name ‘Simmo’

and was a mad Carlton supporter.

At the age of 17 Brian ventured to the Mentone Town hall for a Rock Dance, it was there that he caught a glimpse of a beautiful young lady ‘Sandra’ who was 16 years old at the time. Sandra was with another date that night but was approached by a thin fit young man dressed to the nines and looking extremely dapper. In today’s terms Brian was out to cut someone’s lunch, and that he did. Sandra didn’t play easy, Brian had to persist in his pursuit but his charm, good looks and fashion sense soon won Sandra over.

On the 28 April 1965 Brian received a letter from the Australian Defence Force to undertake a medical examination as a conscript for National Service, to possibly be shipped off to Vietnam to fight for his country. Surprisingly Brian was declared unfit for service due to asthma and remained hot on the tail of Sandra where he wanted to be.

They married not long after on the 8th October 1966 at St Augustine’s Church Mentone, aged 19 and 21.

Without any mucking around, 10 months later Julie was born on the 12th August 1967 (Obviously the asthma had subsided by then) and then Melissa on 3rd March 1970, the family unit was formed.

Brian’s whole working carrier revolved around his passion for art and design. He excelled in line drawings and sheet metal work, where he even picked up awards at the Royal Melbourne show. He was a budding young graphic designer and started work at K G Lukes compiling artwork for trophies, cutlery, plates etc.

From there he moved to the ‘Australian Embroidery Company’ again involved in the design

aspect of products.

Foodland was next in line where Brian was the Head of the arts studio, and here it is where he met many of his close friends.

The opposition at ‘Composite Buyers ‘ were then able to lure him over , where he stayed until he realized that it was time he took control and he set out on his own with a close friend Rob Donsen to take on the world of graphic design and advertising and there emerged ‘Grouse Advertising’.

After many good times Rob and Brian went in different directions with Brian continuing on with Grouse Advertising and working from home which he never regretted. This allowed him to be at home with Sandra and the kids day and night, like a true family man. This he did up until retirement only a few years ago, his office still sits today with the tools of his trade which also form part of our memories of him.

Later in life when man started to invent fast boats and bigger engines Brian turned his passion to water skiing, a sport he loved and was good at, and passed these genes down to his daughters and grandchildren. He loved teaching anyone to ski and his patience never ran dry, unless it was getting past happy hour at which he would say ‘Fuels low better go in Sandy’. Even as early as last February he was able to get his grandchildren Charlie and Ellie up on skies for the first time, something they will always remember .

Boats were a passion and over the years there were several boats of all shapes and sizes but all had one thing in common, they were fast and powerful, no aluminium tinny for Brian, if it couldn’t pull up 20 skiers at once then it wasn’t

26.14.1945 – 25.07.2013

Page 23: Commodore's Comments - Beaumaris · Commodore's Comments The past months have been a busy time at the club with several major events being held. The Annual Fishing Lecture Night was

worth having. Brian loved his boats and this became a big part of his family life with the kids growing up skiing at places such as Boonie Doon and Howqua. These family holiday memories are irreplaceable!

Brian was a very handy man and a man of many skills, Brian and Sandra are notorious for their passion and energy when it comes to getting things done. They have owned several homes all of which they carried out substantial renovations and once started they were unstoppable. These two were the founders of ‘Back yard blitz’ and ‘The Block’, they put those contestants to shame.

If they ran out of homes then they would start on their daughter’s homes, banging the door early Sunday mornings with tools and a cask of Red or white wine for later in hand, no hangover was safe from these two. But that’s what they did, together they worked as a team all in the name of family, and enjoyed every minute.

This has continued right through to recent times with their 90 minute caravan make over at their special little lake side caravan park at Howqua River where they have transformed your typical old Miller caravan into Crown Casino on wheels.

Brian will also be remembered for loving a beer and wine, happy hour sometimes started a little too early but that’s ok, because he only had one or two or three or four or five. It was his way to relax and unwind. Red and white wine was his poison of choice, the reds normally had him banished to the spare bed by Sandra just to keep the peace.

Having not travelled extensively in earlier years Brian and Sandra

certainly made up for it in recent times with trips and cruises throughout Australia and overseas. Sandra was always the instigator in the planning of trips but Brian never complained! The cruises were by far the favourite, allowing them to see the world in style and safety.

Brian’s whole focus on life was his wife and family, the happiest days of his life were the births of his daughters Jules and Mel, and later the arrival of his 5 beautiful grandchildren Brea, Mason, Charlie, Ellie and Indi. They are the luckiest kids alive to have had such a wonderful loving Poppa and all will miss him dearly forever. Son in-laws, Pete and Marty have got big shoes to fill after promising Brian to look after the girls and all the grandchildren.

Brian and Sandra were not just a loving married couple they were also sole mates. They were a couple that lived for each other, their children and grandchildren, they spent most of their time together, whether it be working at home, selling raffle tickets or running events at the BMYS or prowling the floors of Bunnings for a new purchase, if Brian bought a bolt, then Sandra would buy the nut, because that’s the kind of relationship they had. They will always remain connected.

Brian first fell noticeably ill approximately 3 years ago after a returning from a beautiful adventure to Vietnam with Sandra. Over the 3 years Brian was subjected to every possibly test known to man and seen by numerous specialists. Brian became known as the ‘Mystery man’ and was finally diagnosed only months ago with a rare disease called Hypa Eosinophillia. The talk of cancer surfaced

but never diagnosed until approximately 6 weeks ago when a secondary rare form of cancer was found in his liver, possibly kidney, groin and throat. The primary cancer was never found.

The cancer was extremely aggressive and chemo therapy was the only option, without it he would only have weeks to live. The first chemo was carried out and it knocked the hell out of him. Sandra, Julie and Mel were with Brian when the Doctors explained that his liver was too sick and that the chemo had not held the cancer at bay. Brian remained strong and courageous for his girls and family and told them that he knew it wasn’t good.

The following day Brian was told by the doctors that there was nothing more that could be done, the chemo was not slowing the cancer and was taking a massive toll on his body, even though the earlier prognosis was not good Brian finally came to terms with the fact that he was not going to be here for much longer. Brian came home on the Tuesday where he so wanted to be. He was ok considering, all the family were popping in to visit him including his cherished grand children.

Brian finally lost his courageous battle on Wednesday morning surrounded by his loving family, holding his hands and saying their goodbyes, Sandra and the girls nursed him as he fought hard for every breath until he took his final breath at 5.20am.

Brian and his infectious smile will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sandra and the family at this very sad time. We all enjoyed Brian’s help, support and friendship over the years.

Rest in peace.

Meet a Member

My Story: I have lived in Hampton for 40 odd years, growing up in East Bentleigh. At school I was not the most disciplined of students, and coasted along until I decided to enrol in year 9 at the old Moorabbin Tech in South Rd. It was here that I started to enjoy school due to the hands on trade subjects, woodwork, sheet metal work, fitting and turning and technical drawing. (To this day, I cannot understand why the governments both State and Federal ever decided to do away with stand alone Tech Schools). I did my apprenticeship in Turning and Fitting at Patons Brakes in East Bentleigh (a division of the Repco group), then went to Caulfield Inst of Technology to complete a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in 1978. Most of my working life has been in hard rock quarrying and concrete recycling. I have been self employed since 2004 designing plant and equipment for these industries. My interests apart from fishing include cricket (I still manage to play at the ripe young age of 60), caravanning with my lovely wife Judy, and I also volunteer with an organisation called Horse Riding for the Disabled.

Why I joined the BMYS: I joined BMYS around 1997 due the marvellous facilities provided for the trailer boat fisherman, and the proximity to good fishing grounds. At the time BMYS was advertising for new members. At that stage I had a Haines Hunter 560F, and a couple of years ago upgraded to a 670 Bar Crusher.

What I enjoy most at the BMYS: It was not until I got onto the Boating Committee, then later the Site Committee that I started to get to know more and more members. Then last year I went on the Game Fishing trip with my son Mark, to Portland. It has been definitely the best thing I have done since becoming a member, again getting to know more people within BMYS.

My favourite club/boating/fishing story: Definitely the Portland trip, we managed to boat 16 Blue Fin Tuna, and a nice Gummy over 4 days.

My recommendation to anyone who wants to get more out of BMYS is to do one of the game fishing or boating trips, you really get to meet some wonderful people from all walks of life.

My Story: I was born in Brunswick and when I was 5 years old moved to Carnegie where I spend most of my childhood. I went to Carnegie Primary School then on to Caulfield Tech. and started an apprenticeship as an electrical fitter. I joined the Caulfield Council and my first job was a lifeguard and then as an assistant manager at the Caulfield pool. I started working at the main depot at Caulfield council working as a works supervisor in a variety of roles. After 31 years working for Caulfield / Glen Eira Council, I decided it was time to leave and started working as CEO of Ultimate Group Australia in the concreting business. Three years ago I started my own business, Fair Dinkum Maintenance working on property maintenance where I still work today.

I have two sons, Christopher aged 26 years, and Douglas aged 22 years, barrack for Richmond, and enjoy playing golf, boating and fishing. I have a passion for all facets of motor sports, anything with a motor. I have a 4.54 metre Streaker runabout and a XJR 1200 Yamaha motorbike that I love riding as often as I can.I have been a member of the BMYS for around 10 years and have been working on the Social committee since joining the club. I am single and now live at Chelsea Heights.

Why I joined the BMYS: I lived in Mentone, and both boys loved boating, skiing and fishing especially. I had visited the club on many occasions attending social events with friends who were members at the time. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the facilities at the club, located so close to home and positioned right on the edge of the bay.

What I enjoy most at the BMYS: I still really enjoy mixing with fellow members on Friday nights and at social events. I joined the social committee which gives me alot of satisfaction arranging functions and seeing members enjoying themselves. The club has great clubrooms, ramps, BBQ’s and plenty of space for families to enjoy the benefits of the bay.

My favourite club/boating/fishing story: I was fishing off seal rock on a mate’s charter boat with my son and one of his mates just out of Westernport Bay. I was sitting in the game chair with rod and monster reel in hand when this almighty dark shadow appeared headed straight towards the boat. My son’s friend Andy who was sitting on one of the gunnels at the time quickly jumped off and positioned himself at the centre of the boat. It was a great white and as the shark cruised past the bait and the boat, we were all extremely relieved that he did.

Did you hear ?There was a boat rescue last month. On its maiden voyage in Australia a

large American boat was observed being towed into our club by the Coast Guard. Reportedly a large amount of money was donated to the Coast Guard, not for the tow in but to make sure that the names of those on

board were not divulged.

A long term member of the club recently purchased a new boat. He was delighted with the boat’s performance however very concerned about its fuel consumption filling up at the local petrol station after every trip out.

It was while he was filling up again when it was pointed out that the fuel gauge was actually located on the opposite side of the dashboard.

Over the past two months, June and I have had the great pleasure of caravanning up to Karumba on the Gulf and 4WD up to the tip of Cape York including part of the Old Telegraph Track. It’s one of the last great 4X4 adventures left in Australia.

As I write this report from Mission Beach in Queensland, your BMYS Site Committee is deep in preparation for the September working bee. Over discussions at a few “Happy Hours” during

our travels, it is clear that BMYS has developed a culture that is pretty unique and special by clubs standards today. Over our 53 years history, our club has grown steadily but strongly due to the fantastic participation of members at our two annual working bees. You only have to look at our pictorial archives and the past editions of On-Deck to see that throughout our long history, members and their families have participated and contributed strongly to the success of working bees. Not too many clubs experience the level of member support that we are so lucky to have. By the time you read this, our September working Bee will have been run and I have no doubt won – thanks to everyone that participated and helped.

Vale - Peter Barnes – it would be remiss of me not to comment on the passing of Past Commodore - Peter Barnes on the 25th August 2013. I have known Peter since our kids went to preschool in Mentone together almost 40 years ago. In those early days, Peter was one of the most introverted people I knew. He was your archetypical

Accountant, quiet and extremely reserved. But Peter was a great family man and he and Marg along with daughters Belinda and Fiona were a strong family unit and always a pleasure to be around.

I am proud that I was the one many years ago to recommend Peter Barnes to the then Board of BMYS for the role of club Treasurer. Peter served on the Board at BMYS for twelve years. During his three years as Commodore, Peter oversaw a period of quiet achievement, a real mark of the man. During my recent times on the Board, I was always amazed at the way Peter, as Immediate Past Commodore was able to offer good, balanced, impartial and valued advice. In many ways, it is a real pity for Peter, Marg and BMYS that Peter’s recently awarded Life Membership will not enable him to continue to serve and enjoy the club. Thanks Peter for everything you achieved, you richly deserved your Life Membership and you will be sadly missed.
