Genesis Sermon Series

Living It Out We started out saying that faith and righteousness go together. What would it look like to test that concept in the here and now. Jesus certainly did and He's provided a clean slate to work from, in fact, He made us new people and part of a family line that will live forever. Take that eternal perspective to heart today. Find somewhere to apply grace in a life you touch every day. See what habit you can make of it.

Giving At Hope, giving is something we do with a spirit of joy in response to the love and forgiveness we have freely received in Jesus. We never give out of obligation or guilt. Your gift works to help those in need and drives what we’re all about: Love, Grow & Serve. Give during a service

(Cash or Check) or mail. Give online at http://

✟ GENESIS: ABRAHAM ✟ July 12, 2020

+ WE GATHER TO WORSHIP +

OPENING SONG Blessed Be Your Name - Redman Blessed be Your name in the land that is plentiful; Where the streams of abundance flow, blessed be Your name;

Blessed be Your name when I’m found in the desert place, When I walk thro’ the wilderness, blessed be Your name;

Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise; When the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say.

Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your name; Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your glorious name.

Blessed be Your name when the sun’s shining down on me; When the world’s all as it should be, blessed be Your name;

Blessed be Your name on the road marked with suffering; Tho’ there’s pain in the offering, blessed be Your name;

Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise; When the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say.

Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your name; Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your glorious name.

You give and take away, You give and take away; My heart will choose to say, “Lord, blessed be Your name.” (2X)

Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your name; Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be Your glorious name.

ANNOUNCING GOD'S PRESENCE

PSALM OF PRAISE Psalm 65:5-8 P By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness,

O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas;

C the one who by his strength established the mountains, being girded with might;

P who stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples,

C so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs. You make the going out of the morning and

the evening to shout for joy. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE Lord, Reign In Me Over all the earth, You reign on high, Every mountain stream, every sunset sky. But my one request, Lord, my only aim, Is that you’d reign in me again.

Lord, reign in me, Reign in Your power, Over all my dreams, In my darkest hour, You are the Lord, Of all I am, So won’t You reign in me again.

Over every thought, Over every word, May my life reflect, The beauty of my Lord, Cause You mean more to me Than any earthly thing, So won’t You reign in me again.

Lord, reign in me, Reign in Your power, Over all my dreams, In my darkest hour, You are the Lord, Of all I am, So won’t You reign in me again.

Lord, reign in me, Reign in Your power, Over all my dreams, In my darkest hour, You are the Lord, Of all I am, So won’t You reign in me again. Won’t You reign in me again. Won’t You reign in me again.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

+ WE LISTEN TO GOD'S WORD +

OLD TESTAMENT READING GENESIS 15:1–6 God promises Abraham offspring.

1After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” 4And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” 5And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING MATTHEW 13:1–9, 18–23 So gracious is the sower that He plants seeds everywhere.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the thirteenth chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. 4And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, 6but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. 7Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9He who has ears, let him hear. . . . 18“Hear then the parable of the sower: 19When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

CHILDREN'S MESSAGE – KRISTI BAUER We believe children are the church and that God’s Word can and should be spoken in a way that they understand. Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14).

RECEIVING THE OFFERING Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. (Hebrews 13:16)

The giving of gifts in worship is a long-standing practice of God's people to give thanks to God for His many and daily blessings and to provide for the expansion of His mission on earth. • In the sanctuary, plates have been placed at the entrance and exit

to gather our offering without contact. • Children's offering can be placed in the baskets on the lower

stand. • Send a text to 651-401-7200 by simply typing “give” followed by a

dollar amount. eg: “give $50” • hopeofhastings.com/donate • Mail a check to the church.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. (Colossians 4:2)

After each portion of the prayers the pastor will say, “Lord, in your mercy,” and the people will respond, “Hear our prayer.”

Fernando & Alison Sabio serving in the La Cieba area of Northern Honduras. Hi friends! We are starting Week 10 of lock-down. Fernando, and I to a lesser extent, have settled into a rhythm of Zoom meetings. These really hot months lead to scheduled power outages (supply/demand issue), which will affect virtual activities planned for this week (and beyond). We will see how the week plays out, whether outage information is accurate, but you could pray for the Lord to guide us and work through what, from our perspective, seems to be an inconvenience and obstacle.. How good to know He is in control of all circumstances, even when it "feels" like good plans are on hold.
