COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Dr. Randall Bytwerk is known as one of the foremostcontemporary experts in the area of propaganda andrhetoric. He has been a member of the faculty in theDepartment of Communication Arts and Sciences atCalvin since 1985, where he teaches oral rhetoric,advanced public speaking, and a course on propagandaand persuasion. He believes his department offers the bestundergraduate program in communication at any liberalarts college in the United States. He has ably served aschair of the department since 1988, with the exceptionof a two-year hiatus. During his tenure as chair, theDepartment of Communications Arts and Sciences hasexperienced tremendous growth. Dr. Bytwerk has beeninstrumental in the recruitment and hiring of stellarfaculty in a field that continually needs to stretch in orderto meet the ever-changing demands of popular culture,media, technology, and communication. Under hisleadership, his department has added major programs inSpeech Pathology and Audiology, Business Communica-tion, Digital Communication, Film Studies, Mass Media,Rhetoric and Communications, and more. He has alsobeen involved in the design, planning, and fund-raisingfor the DeVos Communication Center, which will open inthe summer of 2002. The Department of CommunicationArts and Sciences will finally be united under one roof—itis the only academic department at Calvin that now hasoffices in every major academic building on campus!

Randall Bytwerk graduated from Calvin College in1971. He earned his Masters Degree in 1973 and hisPh.D. in 1975, from Northwestern University. He servedas Lecturer at Northwestern University in 1975 andtaught at Southern Illinois University’s Departmentof Speech Communication from 1975 to 1985. In1986 he spent four months as Visiting Professor atJohannes-Gutenberg-Universitat in Mainz, Germany.

He is widely published in the area of Nazi and EastGerman propaganda and has a new book at the publisheron the topic. His first book, Julius Streicher: The Man WhoPersuaded A Nation to Hate Jews (1988), based on the

leading Nazi anti-Semite, was recently republished. Hehas contributed chapters to books on Germany, Germanpropaganda, Western propaganda, nationalism, andrhetoric, and has published numerous articles and bookreviews in academic and professional journals. He hasdeveloped a German Propaganda Archive on the web—a large and growing collection of translations of Germanpropaganda from the Nazi and East German eras(www.calvin.edu/academic/cas/gpa).

Dr. Bytwerk has been awarded numerous honors,including the Danforth Foundation Faculty AssociateProgram Appointee, 1978-86; The Department ofSpeech Communication (SIU-C), AMOCO OutstandingTeaching Award, 1977 and 1982; and the OutstandingYoung Teacher Award, Central States Speech Associa-tion, 1977. He has served on numerous college commit-tees and is a member of the Eastern German StudiesAssociation, Central States Communication Association,Religious Speech Communication Association, and theNational Communication Association.

His major outside interests are backpacking,primarily in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains,and things German, due to his many trips to Germanyand much research on the country. The backpackinginterest developed when he worked for three summersat Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Parkthrough A Christian Ministry in the National Parks.He is also an avid practical joker and has institutedthe Moses Award, Calvin College’s prize for the bestpractical joke of the year. Any student or staff memberat Calvin is eligible for the award.

He is married to Sharon Van Haitsma Bytwerk. Theyhave one child, David (21), currently a student at Calvin.Their daughter, Katharine, died at the age of 12 in October1996, as the result of a hiking accident in Slovakia whilethe Bytwerks were leading the Calvin semester in Hungary.The support of the students on the semester in Hungaryand the greater Calvin community provided glimpses ofgrace for them in a time of immense sadness.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIFTY YEAR REUNION CLASS

We who stood in your place 50 years ago greet youon this day of celebration. Congratulations! May therichest blessings of Christ go with you!

In this 9-11 world of ours, it will hardly do for usmerely to wish you well. As we leave the scene younow enter, we feel that the world you face is moretumultuous and treacherous than was ours. To be sure,some of us left college to go off to war, but the worldwas more structured, and we were confident of victory.As you leave Calvin, the world has changed immeasur-ably, our nation has, and the certainties that 50 yearsago sustained young graduates have vanished.

We now call you to courageous pursuit of all thathas made Calvin College a stronghold of careful, faith-filled thought and action. Canada and the UnitedStates—indeed the world—need valiant people whothink in the name of Christ. You are such a cadre.

With all that must be conquered, it seems that thegreatest challenges just now are in the realm of the spirit.Cynicism, a sense of futility, fear, and times of sheerdespair trouble all who assess the national and world

scene with realism. It is a time for Christ’s disciples tolash themselves to the Bible and with diligent joy todevelop a daily time of prayer. Just now, when thisexciting age waits to use all our energy, all our talent andour every gift, we can be stirred by the conviction thatthose who trust Christ fully and serve him unreservedlycan be part of the restoration of all things.

We testify that we have been lifted often by themighty resurrection power of Christ during our fivedecades, so quickly passed. If you get a chance, listensometime to Calvin alumni joined in choir singing HeHas the Power—from The Mass of St. Augustine.

A fifth printing is almost unheard of for a book thatis intended for mathematicians, engineers, and physicists.For most of us, the title sounds like something in a foreignlanguage. The book’s success has been gratifying to JackKuipers, a retired professor of mathematics at CalvinCollege, who spent ten years researching and developingthe book; he even typed every page and supplied all theexquisite graphics in the 384-page book. The book became abestseller early on in such places as Huntsville, Alabama, andvarious other places where aerospace engineering goes on. Itis now available and in use worldwide. Kuipers has lecturedon its contents in such exotic places as Japan and Bulgaria(where he was featured on the front page of a nationalnewspaper). The book is designed to make research inquaternion algebra and rotating objects more accessibleto what Kuipers calls “aerospace-type people.”

“Others have written about quaternions before,” saidKuipers, “but much of what has been written is often, in myview, not very inviting. I’m not the scholarly theoretician-typemathematician; I’m an applied mathematician, a person whoapproaches matters from a problem-solving and engineeringperspective. Perhaps that’s what makes the book different andattractive.” In fact, Kuipers’ background in the years beforehe began his 20-year teaching career at Calvin makes his takeon numbers, equations, and formulas unique. He spent 17years in electrical and aerospace engineering, which gave himhis skills in mathematical modeling. His early career involvedworking for defense and aerospace contractors to developgyroscopes, inertial navigation platforms, and complexweapons systems for the U.S. Air Force.

He is known as the inventor of “SPASYN,” a patentedspace synchronizer system that allows pilots of aircraftto simply look at a target, push a button, and thus launchbombs or missiles to take their trajectory to the target.The system uses a miniscule sensor embedded in the pilot’shelmet to couple electromagnetically to a source in thecockpit. “The idea was revolutionary because it madedive-bombing unnecessary,” said Kuipers. “It also was veryfortunate for pilots because it made their missions muchless risky. Since the entire aircraft was a weapons system,

the aircraft now had the virtual flexibility of a handgun.”Kuipers went on to say, “I did not intend for my

technology to be used in this way. As I began my career Ifound it very interesting that the technology could be usedto support the rendezvous of satellites. Its primary functionis to relate two bodies in space.” Yet, much of Kuipers’ earlywork occurred in the Cold War years, when “our worrieswere about Russia and communism,” he said. “The defensivemindset of the nation insisted that the U.S. should beprepared and able to respond if someone attacked us.” Still,the talk of “kill ratios,” and “kill efficiency” led Kuipers toreturn to his alma mater to teach in 1966. “I needed to getaway from all that talk of killing. It seemed that I had beenmoving in circles of activity I didn’t want to become morefamiliar with.” He has continued to be a consultant tovarious aerospace enterprises.

Though most of the applications of Kuipers’ technol-ogy have been defense related, he has worked hard atfinding more civilian uses. Currently he is working onpatenting a system that will make it safer for aircraft toshare common space and be more aware of each other’swhereabouts even in zero-visibility conditions.

Kuipers spent his first three college years at Calvin, andthen transferred to the University of Michigan, as was usualin those days, for his engineering degree. It was at Calvin,however, that he discovered his love of mathematics.Kuipers said that he had never expected to go to collegewhen he was in high school, but the shortage of jobs ledto his enrolling at Calvin. “I am grateful to the college forappointing me,” said Kuipers. The college enabled him toalign mathematics with his faith and to teach out of his faith.For example, he points to a portion of his book in which helinks his formulas and sequences to an explanation of theseasons. “Using mathematics you can explain why andprecisely compute how much the length of each dayincreases in summer and decreases in winter; the appropri-ate celestial mechanics are modeled now by using rotationsequences. One can explain it all very nicely mathematically,but the effort generates awe and inspires a spiritual view.”

He went on: “It’s fun and often beautiful to work things

out and see how they all fit together. I see much beauty inmathematics. Yet much of what I see is still pure mystery.We live so presumptuously—we think we understandthings, and in some limited, often pious, sense we do, butwhen pressed we have to confess that we do not.”

In a 1998 Grand Rapids Press article Ernie Blood,Kuipers’ former colleague and head of an aerospacenavigation firm for which Kuipers worked, is quoted:“Jack has this ability to put mathematics to life. A lotof professors, they can prove this theory or that on paper,but give them a practical problem.... He would sit downand write a mathematical solution to something practicaland do it very elegantly.” Blood was referring to Kuipers’work in developing what is known as “virtual reality,”which he worked on when producing simulations for AirForce pilots in the 1950’s. He later developed a six-degrees-of-freedom transducer and graphics system and is thereforeregarded as the founder of “virtual reality.” However, hediscounts recognition for his achievements: “These aregreat honors, but in that context who really deserves anyhonor if all of us are just doing what we love to do?”

Kuipers, now 81 years old, lives in Grand Rapids withhis wife, Lois Holtrop Kuipers ’46. Four of their five childrengraduated from Calvin. Kuipers comes to his office oncampus every day. He holds several patents, but continuesto apply his mathematical genius to more formulas andequations, and has lost none of his zest for exploring themysteries and beauties of mathematics and theology.

John (’47) and Juliana (’45) Flietstra SteensmaWhen John Steensma lost both of his arms after a

horrific accident at the age of 17—he was shot throughwith electrical charges and fell 70 feet off a tower—some inhis home community prayed that he wouldn’t live throughthe resulting surgeries. There simply wasn’t muchknowledge or vision about dealing with disabled persons.

When Juliana Flietstra’s widowed father left her inGrand Rapids to work on a factory assembly line tohelp with family finances while he went back to hisIowa pastorate, the young woman met some friends

who were attending Calvin College, and she began todream of books and writing and learning.

And when these two amazing persons found eachother at a church picnic—John with his screaming bluesatin cowboy shirt and appliances for arms, and Juliana,who attended the picnic reluctantly with relatives—Godworked miracles. Not only in their lives, but throughthem, wonderful things happened in the lives ofthousands of persons they touched.

“My mother had a lot of faith,” recalled John. “Eventhough, in a six month’s period of time, she had lost herhusband, lightning had burned down the family business,I had my accident, my brother was brain-injured in amotorcycle crash and the first grandson was borndeformed and died after a few months, she persevered.”

John’s mother helped him through the prolongedrecovery and would not let those who dismissed hischances at a successful life affect the family’s decisions.The one person to whom the door was always open wasJuliana Flietstra, who began a relationship with Johnsoon after that important church picnic.

Juliana’s love of learning had enabled her to figureout a way to attend Calvin—“for $37.50 a semester,” shesaid—and her enthusiasm was infectious. John appliedto Calvin two years later through a grant from the StateRehabilitation Agency. Already John and Juliana were aninseparable team, with Juliana assisting John with histyping. They were married in 1945 when Juliana gradu-ated, and John took a sabbatical year when both wereoffered jobs at the Army hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan.John assisted with amputees who were faced with the samechallenges he had after his accident; Juliana was hired asan educational therapist, teaching high school and juniorcollege subjects to patients on the wards.

“God steps in,” said John. “I’ve never applied for ajob my entire life. He used the bad that happened to mefor good in many, many instances.”

The Steensmas moved back to Grand Rapids after thewar ended. John graduated from Calvin in 1947 and spentthe next 12 years as the director of the new Child Amputee

Project of the Michigan Crippled Children’s Commission.He was an early pioneer of designing and fitting prosthesesfor children, as well as developing training curriculum.

Juliana remembers that gradually they became convincedof God’s call to mission work but, for a time, could not finda niche. Abruptly, one day in 1958, through the auspices ofChurch World Service, an opportunity opened up to giveleadership at a civilian rehabilitation center in Korea.

She said, “We had four children in school and a newhouse. But off we went, and my brother sold everything forus. It was a tough move! But the wonders we were able tosee and participate in made this a blessed decision.”

During the time of John’s work in Korea, Julianaput her writing expertise to good use as editor of thecolumn “Thoughts for the Times,” which ran regularlyin the Korea Times.

“I wrote a number of the columns myself, but recruited agroup of several others who would take turns,” she said. “Itwas amazing how influential this column became through-out the country.” The same column still appears today.

John’s work in Korea was ground-breaking andpaved the way for major advances in rehabilitationservices in that country.

“For any person in any part of the world to lead a lifewithout a limb, let alone both hands, must be daunting andchallenging,” wrote Professor Kim Hyung Shik of Seoul’sChung-ang University. “But [John’s] own approach to lifehad such a profound influence upon the people withdisabilities because they were so burdened with the negativeand stigmatizing attitudes of so-called able-bodied people.”

The professor, himself a Korean War orphan who lostan arm during an air raid, continued: “He was a true pioneerin his field, and the rehabilitation program he set up laid thefoundation for Yonsei University Medical School’s Rehabili-tation Center. So there was a significant contribution notonly to people with disabilities, but also to medical training.”

Gaining the status of respected rehabilitation visionary(John) and journalist (Juliana) in Korea the Steensmasopportunities to bring God’s Word to Koreans in manyways. They recruited the first Christian Reformed teachersfor missionary schools and had a major influence onthe establishment of a Christian Reformed Servicemen’sCenter, which provided a Christ-centered “home awayfrom home” for military personnel.

After eight years, the Steensmas returned to theUnited States and settled in Florida, where both workedat the Easter Seals Center in Fort Lauderdale. Then Johnmoved to the University of Miami Rehabilitation Centerand Juliana worked as an educational therapist in theMiami Veteran’s Hospital until both retired in 1985.

They are now living in Holland, Michigan, withmany stories to tell and wise counsel to give on adiversity of subjects.

Juliana, ever the writer, is adding to her chronicles of anadventurous life. She made a beautiful quilt (titled “TimePasses”) that contains photographic renderings of the entireSteensma saga, complete with images of their four children,nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In 1969,John Knox Press published an account of their work inKorea entitled The Quality of Mercy. Since then she hasdocumented their time in Korea in a manuscript entitled“A Moving Experience” and is currently working on anautobiography for the grandchildren.

“Someone suggested the title ‘A Leap of Faith,’” shesaid, with a smile. “Perhaps it would be more accurateto call them ‘Little Hops of Faith.’”

Whether one calls the Steensma journey a “leap”or a series of “hops,” there is no doubt that thetremendous faith and determination of two Calvinalumni in a 57-year partnership have brought hope,help, and healing to thousands of persons in needof physical, spiritual, and emotional care.

DEPARTMENTAL BANNERSThroughout history, colorful banners have been used to mark important religious and civic events and to

celebrate the vision and spirit of the participants in such events. The departmental banners displayed at thisoccasion arise from an awareness of this tradition and are meant to continue it. Besides symbolicallyrevealing the richness of the various disciplines at Calvin College, the banners graphically represent theirdistinctiveness. Although their colors are mostly in keeping with traditional associations—scarlet forreligion and theology, blue for education, orange for engineering—their forms combine the traditional, thecontemporary, and the abstract.

Art DepartmentAn abstract eye and hand symbolize artistic expression through the artist’s sense of sightand touch. Bright colors against black suggest creative boldness.

Biology DepartmentDominating the biology banner is a symbol representing the structure of the DNAmolecule, deoxyribonucleic acid. The structure of this fundamental material of life, thechemical basis of heredity, was revealed in 1953 and actually photographed in 1969.

Chemistry and Biochemistry DepartmentThe main symbol used in this banner is the electron distribution for tetrahedral hybridorbitals, which represents the chemical activity of the elements and their compounds.Two segments of a crystal structure are included in the design, which are also the floor-plan shape of the science building. The shaft of pale yellow symbolizes the light ofinvestigation. Yellow is the traditional color associated with science.

Classical Languages DepartmentWhile the lyre and the wolf may be taken individually as symbols of Greece and Rome,together they portray the unity of the two civilizations and its cultural achievement, theunion of art and nature, and of poetry and myth. Horace has given this continuity andfusion of the two traditions of Greece and Rome its classical literary expression in hisodes, of which none better, perhaps, than the “Integer vitae” ode conveys the intentionof this banner.

Communication Arts and Sciences DepartmentSound waves emanating from a central core symbolize communication through speechand drama. The reversal of the outward movement suggests feedback in communication.Silver gray is the color traditionally assigned to speech and drama.

Computer Science DepartmentThe banner of the Computer Science Department features a Turing machine, thefoundational model of digital computation. The zeroes and ones on its tape reflect thebinary logic by which digital computation is implemented. The changing colors andorder of the numbers express the transition as data move from input through processingto output. The white shaft and its golden sheath symbolize the light and energy ofeducation and the sciences. The flowing wind symbolizes the transforming work of theHoly Spirit as it infuses the discipline of computing.

Economics and Business DepartmentShapes and lines express the charting and planning of economic budgets. Subtlyappearing among other symbols is a cross expressing the Christ-centered teaching ofeconomics at Calvin College. Copper is the color associated with economics.

Education DepartmentThe relationship of teacher and student in the educational process is represented by theforceful interaction of shapes in this design. The white shaft symbolizes the light oflearning in the Holy Spirit. Blue is traditionally linked with education.

Engineering DepartmentThe Engineering banner illustrates the key activity of engineers, namely, their involve-ment with the design process, an iterative, decision-making sequence. Steps in thesequence, represented by circles and rectangles, are connected by arrows to indicate themovement from the initial problem statement to final solution. Two-way arrows suggestthe possibility of sequence reversal. Orange traditionally designates engineering.

English DepartmentThe two main symbols, the lion and the eagle, represent England and the United Statesof America. The lozenge pattern in the background expresses the pageantry of Englandduring the development of the English language.

French DepartmentThe banner of the Department of French features the Coq Gaulois, long a nationalemblem of France, and the Arch of Triumph, a symbol of French patriotism. The cock,traditionally the Christian symbol for watchfulness, has been adopted as its symbol by anation which since its inception has been one of the important cradles of Christianthought and practice. The colors of the national flag are represented by the Coq Gaulois.

Geology, Geography, and Environmental Studies DepartmentEarthkeeping, the human community’s care for God’s earth, is symbolized in the bannerfor the Department of Geology, Geography, and Environmental Studies by representa-tions of atmosphere, mountains, cities, water, and the various levels of the earth’sinterior. The white shaft symbolizes the light and energy of learning stimulated by theHoly Spirit.

Germanic Languages DepartmentThe study of the Dutch and German languages is represented by symbols taken fromemblems of the countries associated with these languages. The traditional black eaglerepresents Germany, and the orange lion is from the seal of the Netherlands. The whiteshaft symbolizes the light of learning.

Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance, and Sport DepartmentEngaged in exercise, sports, and dance, a person in motion is suggested by the movementof rhythmical shapes and lines. Sage green is the color associated with physical fitness.

History DepartmentJagged horizontal bands, representing both the rise and fall of civilizations and the fourkingdoms as described in the Book of Daniel, move across vertical time lines, whichalso symbolize the dramatic influence of Christ on history.

LibraryThe library as a gatherer, receptacle, and distributor of information, ideas, and learningis represented by the abstract book shape, while the white, flowing shaft itself symbol-izes the light and energy of learning in the Holy Spirit of God. The flame is thetraditional symbol of learning and discovery through research.

Mathematics and Statistics DepartmentMathematicians have always saved time and effort by substituting symbols for words.The basic arithmetical steps of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing aredepicted on this banner by some of the earliest ways of writing them down.

The Renaissance calculator Tartaglia used the first letter of the Italian word for plus tosignify adding. Diophantus favored this minus sign in Greek times. Leibniz employedthis multiplication symbol in 17th-century Germany. J. E. Gallimard used this reverseD for division in 18th-century France.

Music DepartmentThe design of the Music banner emphasizes the rhythms of musical sounds. Shapes andlines suggest strings, valves, keys, horn bell, drum, and other musical forms. Radiatingcircles suggest sound waves. The colors express the various moods of music.

Nursing DepartmentThe traditional emblem of nursing, Florence Nightingale’s lamp, is featured in thebanner for the Department of Nursing. The flame of the lamp symbolizes the light ofChristian compassion and education. The gold of the lamp is the traditional color forscience. The background apricot color is the academic regalia color for nursing, whilethe white shaft represents peace through the Holy Spirit.

Philosophy DepartmentLight refracted through a transparent prism symbolizes the many-faceted investigationsof fact and of principles of reality and of human nature and conduct.

Physics and Astronomy DepartmentThe construction of elements is symbolized in the Physics banner by the simplest atom,hydrogen, with its single proton and electron. Also included in the design are a tracing ofthe paths of particles from an atom and a segment of a crystal structure, which is also thefloor-plan shape of the science building. The yellow shaft symbolizes the light of investigation.

Political Science DepartmentThe banner of the Department of Political Science features a representation of thefasces, a symbol of the authority of the state, and arrows that express the directionand flow of the analytical and holistic nature of the process of law. The fasces, abundle of rods bound about by an ax with projecting blade, was carried beforeancient Roman magistrates as a symbol of authority. The white shaft of seven rodsalso symbolizes peace and enlightenment through the Holy Spirit.

Psychology DepartmentThe Greek letter PSI, the first letter of the Greek word psyche (the mind), tradition-ally signifies the discipline of psychology. The color red symbolizes emotion; blue,rationality; and white, peace through the Holy Spirit.

Religion and Theology DepartmentThree symbols of the Trinity—circle, cross, and dove—express the fullness of Godas He reveals Himself as Creator, Savior, and Counselor. These symbols areinterlocked to depict the oneness of God. The shaft of white is the light of learningin Christian education guided by the Holy Spirit. Scarlet is traditionally associatedwith theology.

Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice DepartmentThe central concept of sociology, represented by the inner circle, is a personinteracting with other people to form groups. Total human society, represented bythe broken circle, is composed of many small units forming a larger interrelatedstructure. All groups, from the family to society itself, exist within a framework ofsocial norms. This normative or cultural framework, represented by the unbrokenouter circle, promotes conformity, as suggested by the arrows directed from ittoward the inner circles of society and the smaller group.

Spanish DepartmentThe banner of the Spanish Department features the traditional symbols of thehistorical kingdoms of Castilla (castle), León (lion), and Aragón (red and yellowbars). These Christian kingdoms emerged during the eight-hundred-year-longreconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from domination by Muslim rulers. The separatekingdoms were joined through the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella, andeventually coalesced into the modern nation of Spain.
