GreetingPRESIDENT’S

Dear Members of the Class of 2020,

It is indeed my great honor to congratulate you on your graduation from Keystone College.

I know you have worked very hard during the last several years to get to this point. While I am always thrilled to greet our newest graduates each year, I’m especially pleased to offer my kudos to the Class of 2020.

Our lives have changed in so many ways during the last few months because of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m sure you would rather be celebrating this special day in person with your family, classmates, and friends. However, our virtual celebration is special in its own way and symbolizes why I am so proud of you.

With the help of our faculty and staff, you have persevered through the most difficult of times and today you are being recognized for your achievements, not only during this semester but during your entire time at Keystone. You now know that you have succeeded in this journey and that you can rise above any situation and conquer any challenge.

Of course, your life going forward will not always be easy and may be fraught with unforeseen obstacles. Don’t worry! You are ready because of the success you have achieved in the classroom and elsewhere on campus.

Today, you should rejoice and celebrate your accomplishments. You can also look forward to tomorrow with the knowledge that there is nothing that can stop you. You are Keystonians!

I thank each and every one of you for being a part of this special class in Keystone’s history. You are unique in my heart and in the hearts of your families and fellow graduates. Again, congratulations. We are all so proud of you!

Sincerely,

Tracy L. Brundage, Ph.D.

History of Keystone College PROGRESS THROUGH EFFORT

Keystone Academy was founded May 6, 1868, by citizens from the local community and conducted its first classes in the First Baptist Church of Factoryville. The Academy moved to the newly-completed Harris Hall in 1870. As the Academy grew in size and scope over the next sixty years, Trustee John H. Brooks initiated the first steps in 1932 toward transforming it from an academy to an independent junior college. Brooks and other trustees, including Board Chairman, L. A. Watres, oversaw this noteworthy transition, which was formalized in 1934.

The leadership provided by several presidents since that time has helped Keystone progress to its current status as a leader in regional higher education. Under the College’s first President, Byron S. Hollinshead, Keystone gained its regional accreditation and established a reputation for academic excellence. President Hollinshead was succeeded in 1945 by Dr. Blake Tewksbury, who had served as Dean of the College and continued to champion the academic quality of a Keystone education. He was succeeded by Dr. Harry K. Miller, Jr., in 1960.

During Dr. Miller’s presidency, Keystone undertook a period of exceptional growth that saw the construction of many of the College’s residence halls and its library-classroom building, today’s Miller Library. Expansion of Capwell Science Hall and the construction of the student campus center, as well as an addition to complete Evans Dining Hall, were also accomplished during this time.

Following this growth of facilities and enrollment, former trustee John B. Hibbard assumed the leadership of Keystone in 1975. President Hibbard reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to an education that would lead students to live constructive lives. Dr. Louis V. Wilcox, Jr. became the fifth president of Keystone, following the retirement of President Hibbard in 1983. He promoted the continuation of excellence in the expanding College academic programs.

Margaretta B. Chamberlin, an active trustee and community leader, took office in 1985. A participant in all facets of campus life, President Chamberlin brought a palpable sense of

family to Keystone. Under her direction, the College’s Gambal Athletic Center was built, and Harris Hall was renovated. Two years later, Dr. Robert E. Mooney, Jr., was appointed as Keystone’s seventh president. He stressed the College’s important role in preparing its students to apply their education as citizens and productive members of a global society. Charles F. Kennedy, a longtime trustee, served the College as its eighth president in 1994 and was instrumental in discontinuing the use of “junior” from the College’s name.

In 1995, Dr. Edward G. Boehm, Jr., became Keystone’s ninth president. Under Dr. Boehm’s leadership, the College implemented the Keystone Promise and became a four-year baccalaureate college. In 2001, he further expanded opportunities for students by directing the building of a residence hall, and in 2008 by joining the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), an NCAA Division III collegiate athletic conference.

David L. Coppola, Ph.D., began his tenure as Keystone’s tenth president in 2013 and emphasized the campus-wide priority of “students first,” through the customized student development program, Stairs to Success. He also was a strong advocate to keep college affordable by containing tuition costs and by providing all educational materials for free.

Tracy L. Brundage, Ph.D., became the eleventh president of Keystone College in July 2018 and has strengthened the College’s emphasis on preparing students for successful careers and providing them with skills needed for lifelong learning, leadership, and citizenship. Under Dr. Brundage’s leadership, the College is building upon its proud past and planning for the future while upholding the values that make Keystone such a special place.

True to its founding 150 years ago, Keystone continues to be a good neighbor and an integral part of the community by offering numerous free concerts, lectures, art exhibits, and educational programs, as well as volunteering tens-of-thousands of service hours per year. Keystone’s beautiful campus features miles of pristine walking and hiking trails, protected fresh water streams, suspension bridges, the Sugar Shack, an apple orchard, an apiary, a vernal pool and biology pond, and plentiful fields and outdoor gathering spaces that are frequented by local schools and the public.
