With the warmth and exuberance evident in the staff room on Monday and in the Sophia Centre on Tuesday morning, it was apparent that the holidays provided a time of rest and rejuvenation. These opening days set the platform for the term ahead. For our Year 12s Term 3 is often considered the most challenging; however, we can reframe this perception with a more positive view. Being challenged and stretched is good, especially in a positive and nurturing environment. It can bring out the best in us and be the lever enabling us to accomplish much more than we imagined. In my assembly reflection on Tuesday, I likened the school year to a great symphony, traditionally with four movements which can represent the four terms. We could even take our inspiration from what is regarded as the greatest symphony of all, Beethoven’s 9th, described as a “life affirming master piece.” The beautiful third movement, our third term, lyrically connects and revisits the opening movements, our term one and two, builds on the foundational themes, our work thus far, while exploring new themes, new ideas, deepening our understanding and raising expectations, leading inevitably to the magnificent fourth movement, our final term. Our College Captains, Tilly and Caitlin and our Academic Captains, Emma and Riley provided the substance to my imaginative thoughts outlining the rich learning opportunities that are part and parcel of Term 3 in every arena; academic, cultural and the sporting fields. These are endless and there is as always, something here for everyone. I love Term 3! In our mission and faith life with the values that underpin all that we do, we acknowledge that we are part of the rich diversity of the international community and we seek to be people of peace, a rather relevant and essential mindset for our world today. Of course we also celebrate our feast day, Mary Aikenhead Day, at the end of this month and this year our celebrations will be particularly special. More news of this to come.

Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

It was lovely to welcome back staff and students at the beginning of the week as we commence a new term and a new semester. With the warmth and exuberance evident in the staff room on Monday and in the Sophia Centre on Tuesday morning, it was apparent that the holidays provided a time of rest and rejuvenation. St Cecilia, Patron Saint of Music finds her place at MSM.

The beauty of our Grantuly homestead, the administrative centre of Mt St Michael’s College, has been enhanced further by the addition of a stained glass image of St Cecilia. St Cecilia is the patron saint of music, especially church music, as well as that of musicians, composers, instrument makers and poets.

At the end of 2012 Frank and Lorna Carbon presented this beautifully handcrafted led light sculpture of Saint Cecelia to the College. Both Frank and Lorna were loyal contributors to the College working with the Parents and Friends Association and the Music Support Group for the five years that Rose and Gabrielle attended Mt St Michael’s. This is Frank’s work and it has now found a home on the back Grantuly verandah, where in the winter months the sun’s rays capture and highlight the beautiful rich colours.

When you are next at the College, this beautiful image can be viewed as you exit Mrs Woods’ reception area.

What a special gift this is. Frank Carbon also worked with me to create and design for the led light panels on the front doors of Grantuly to celebrate the 90th Anniversary last year. We are deeply grateful.

Congratulations

On Wednesday, 18 June, our Theatresports team, the ‘Mt St Pikelets’ who played as a wild carded team last term, won the Quarter Finals at Anglican Church Grammar School. The team consisting of Year 11 students, Clare Ryan and Grace Carlson and Year 9 students, Lara Wenham and Sheridan Dowling, played skilfully and courageously. They are well deserving of a place in the Semi Finals which will be held early this term.

In the last weekend of the school holidays, the MSM AeroSchools Team travelled to Nambour Christian College to compete at the annual QLD Cup. All athletes did an amazing job with some excellent routines being performed. As a result of their wonderful team performance, MSM was awarded the AeroSchools Champion Club for 2016. Mt St Michael’s College is running its first ever Immersion Tour to Alice Springs during the September school holidays.

We are very excited at the prospect and looking forward to establishing a long term connection with the Indigenous communities in Alice Springs. We will be working closely with the Dominican Fathers and the Missionary Sisters of Charity.

Thirteen Year 11 students will be accompanied by Mrs Foxover and Mr Campion for the ten day immersion.

We are looking for members of our community to support the upcoming Immersion Tour through donating any AFL paraphernalia. This can be jerseys, balls or other merchandise. The children that we will be working with in schools and health centres and crazy about AFL and this will be a very positive way for MSM to build a solid connection with the communities that we will be engaging with.

All donations to be dropped off at Mr Campion’s office or at College reception. Thank you in advance.

Mt St Michael’s Staff and students takes great pride in the Mission and Values of the College and as an extension of this, we will continue with our Ministry Care Programme in 2016.

We are aware that there are students and families within our community who are at risk due to a variety of factors. So, through the various networks of the Parents & Friends Association, the College Foundation, the Past Pupils, the Pastoral Programme at the College and simply by word of mouth, we hope to become aware of these situations and to respond on a case by case basis.

The College acknowledges that just by being here we are carrying on the mission and vision of the Foundress of the Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead. The poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised in society were always close to the heart of Mary Aikenhead.

During the course of 2015 we responded as a community through preparing meals for families whose difficult circumstances we had been made aware of. We will continue this over the course of this year.

If you would like to contribute to the Ministry Care Programme and support those who are going through difficult times, please contact Stephen Campion on [email protected]
