FROM THE PRINCIPAL DARLING HEIGHTS STATE SCHOOL - WELCOME Thank you for the most positive welcome I have received from staff, parents and importantly the students of Darling Heights State School. Whilst I’m only in my second day, it is very clear to me that Darling Heights offers so much to those who wear the green and gold uniform. I have been very impressed with the positive school culture and atmosphere that supports all students re-gardless of their learning journey. I absolutely look forward to working with all members of the Darling Heights School community until the end of Term 2.
A little bit about me…. I have been a Principal for over 20 yrs across various parts of Queens-land. After Term Two, I will return to Warwick West State School where I have been the Principal for the last 10 years. I am married, have 13 yr old twins, I love to play and watch cricket. If you see me in the playground please stop and have a chat. I would much prefer if you called me by my first name when you meet me (Jason). I look forward to working with you all for the remainder of this term. HUGE SUCCESSFUL SPORTS CARNIVAL Congratulations to our Age Champions and House award winners!
Until next week, Jason Callcott

PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS
This week’s Value is “Safety”, with a focus on, “I think about the manner in which I enter and exit the school grounds”. It is very important that students enter and exit the school in a sensible manner to ensure the safety of not just themselves, but of everybody else also. Important Tips
Walk on cement areas and footpaths – keeping to the left
Always use the pedestrian crossing – cross between the flags and wait for the lollipop lady/man to signal you across.
When crossing the road – Stop, Look, Listen and Think
When being picked up from school - sit and wait quietly
When arriving at school before 8am – sit quietly in Tuckshop area
Walk bikes and scooters when in the school grounds. A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the week ’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mrs Keiryn Clements (Deputy Principal) on 46 368 333.
SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS
The partnership between you and the school, especially your child's teachers, is essential to ensuring that your child has the best opportunities to enjoy the school experience and to learn effectively. Research has proven that when parents and teachers work together, everyone benefits: students tend to earn higher grades, perform better on tests, attend school more regularly, have better behaviour, and show more posi-tive attitudes toward themselves and toward school.
The importance of schools, parents and community working together to help nurture and teach a child can not be underestimated. Your support is crucial and valued by all staff here at Darling Heights State School. Please feel free to contact the school or one of the teachers if you ever have any questions or if you would like opportunities to be further involved in your child’s education.
The Premier's Reading Challenge begins this week. As classes come for lessons they will be given a record sheet for parents to list any books they read to or with the students. The younger students will read 20 books and the older students 15. The Challenge will con-clude on 23 August.
SENIOR NEWS
We would like to remind all students and parents that mobile phones must be handed into the office before school starts and must be turned off. As there are multiple means of communicating with parents and guardians while at school, there is no reason for a mobile to be kept in a bag, and failure to hand in a phone will incur serious consequences.
Friday will be fun-filled with students going to see talented Harristown High schoolers, including former Darling Heights students perform in Grease at the Empire Theatre. There will also be a contingent of future soccer superstars going to represent the school at a Gala Soccer Day, where they will compete against students from other schools.
There are still a couple of spots left for Tallebudgera Camp, so get in while you can.
Finally, we’d like to thank our Year Five students for their diligent performance in their NAPLAN tests. It was great to see everyone taking the tests so seriously even though they are only a small snapshot of a child’s overall abilities.
School Photo Day will be held on Tuesday 18th June. You will receive an envelope for your child/ren to order photos. This needs to be handed in to the photographer with full payment on Photo Day. En-velopes for Sibling/Family photos are available from the school office.
