Main objectives • Assistant: to give future teachers the opportunity to
gain a better understanding of the European dimension to teaching and learning, to enhance their knowledge of foreign languages, other European countries and their education systems and to improve their teaching skills
• Host school: To improve learners’ skills and increase their motivation to learn languages and their interest in the assistant’s country and culture

The tasks and period • Teaching subject(s) or foreign language(s) • Producing teaching material • Improving pupils’ comprehension and expression in
the assistant’s mother tongue and country • Providing support for disabled or less advantaged
pupils, and pupils experiencing difficulties with foreign language learning
• Helping to prepare / or implement a Comenius project • 12–16 hours / week, 13–45 weeks

The role of home (sending) NA
• Induction meeting before departure abroad – the role of assistant – responsibilities
• Grant payments
– financial agreement: grant + travel + induction – payments will be made to assistants’ account in
the home country

The role of host NA (CIMO) • Guidance and information to host schools and mentors
• Induction meeting for mentors in August – the role of mentors – responsibilities
• Induction meeting for assistants in November/February – the role of assistant – responsibilities – make friends

The host school • Contract and plan between assistant and
school – send a copy of the plan to home NA and CIMO
• Assistants are normally covered by the insurance
(including liability insurance) for his/her work at school – the assistant is usually insured in the work palace,
against accident and injuries to the third parties, on the same basis as the rest of the school staff
– assistant is responsible for arranging insurance for his/her own life, sickness and belongings

The host school • If an assistant is based at more than
one school – one school must take responsibility for
coordinating the assistantship – the cost of travel between these
establishments is not to be met from the assistants’ grant, but by the school concerned or by the local education authorities

The host school • Should arrange temporary accommodation
for the first month of the assistants stay
• Professional and non-professional support – weekly meetings
• The host school and mentor help in all
practical things

• There might be a possibility to lengthen the
