Come to the Colonies! You are working for an advertising company that
has been hired to attract colonists to North America.
You will need to create a travel brochure that will catch the eye of average citizens and encourage
them to settle in your assigned region.
You will be working in groups but each one of you is responsible for turning in a brochure.
While you are waiting for me, the C.E.O of the company, to give further instructions, ask each
other what you would look for if you were planning on moving to a new place.
Step One – The Set up!
• Trifold your sheet of paper– This is your rough draft.– Don’t lose it or you start over, and over, and over
• Number each panel in one corner with small numbers 1-6
• On panel 6 at the very bottom, print your first and last name with your class period.
Step Two – The Introduction Panel 1
• Power up your device. Don’t have one? (let’s move you
around)
– Make sure it is on silent!• Write the name of your assigned region on
Panel 1• Next, what colonies are part of that region?– Write that down on Panel 1
• Make a sketch of a map that shows the location of those colonies on Panel 1
Step Three – The HistoryPanel 2
• Who were the founders?• Why was each colony founded?• What are 2-3 important events with dates of
each colony?• Suggestion!– You might want to make a timeline

Step Four – Physical FeaturesPanel 3
• What type of geography does your colonial region have? (be as specific as you can)– Mountains?– Rivers?– Ocean?– Soil condition?– Climate?
Step Five – EconomyPanel 4
• What types of jobs are available?• What is traded in this region?– Who does this region trade with?
• What food and natural resources are available?
• Does your colony use slave labor?– Why or why not?
Step Six – GovernmentPanel 5
• Who is in charge of the colonies in this region?– Names– Titles
• Who can vote?
Step Seven – CulturePanel 6
• What religion is practiced in these colonies?– Is there religious freedom?
• How are the children educated?• What do the colonists do for fun?
Step 8 – Sell it!
• Go through your rough draft– Mark the most positive qualities of your region– Note the most negative qualities…you’ll probably
want to leave those out. • Come up with a catchy slogan for your region.– Write it on the bottom of panel 1
Step 9 – Getting Fancy
• Use your rough draft to publish a beautiful brochure– You can design by hand (ask me for a nice piece of
drawing paper)– You can design on the computer. (Microsoft
Publisher has good templates)-Use the rubric to make sure you include all the required elements
Finish Up!
• Panel 1 – intro, colonies, slogan, artwork
• Panel 2 – Founders, motives, timeline, artwork
• Panel 3 – geography, artwork• Panel 4 – Economy, jobs,
natural resources, slavery? Artwork
• Panel 5 – Government, artwork
• Panel 6 – Culture, religions, religious freedom? education, recreation, artwork
Come up with a catch slogan like “Make it in the Midwest” or “Succeed in the Southwest” or “New Opportunities in the North”
Last, use your rough draft to create a beautiful brochure. You can use Publisher on the computer or do it by hand using the construction paper that I left on the back counter.
