CECIL RHODES once told me that earlyin life he had devoted much thought tothe question whether or not there wasa God. He came to the conclusion thatthere was a 50 percent, chance thatthere was a God and therefore that itwas a matter of the first importanceto ascertain what God wanted him todo. In like fashion I would ask thereader to consider whether or notthere is any proof that the consciouslife of his personality will persistafter death. If he examines theevidence he will probably come to theconclusion that there is a certain percent.

Efforts would be made toanswer, but the replies might notarrive when anyone was in attendanceat the other side; the instrumentsmight not be properly attuned, themessages might be so mutilated as tobe unintelligible. A few cranks whohad never lost the faith, traditionaland dim, that there was a world beyondthe seething waste of waters, would goon experimenting, wasting time andmoney, and exposing themselves to theridicule of the scientific world.

The difficulties they wouldencounter would be the identicaldifficulties which confront us in ourquest for certainty as to life afterdeath. But with patience and

perseverance and careful allowance forthe obstacles in the way oftransoceanic intercourse, theexistence of the American continentwould in the end be established asfirmly as I believe the existence ofthe Other World is very soon about tobe established, beyond all question orcavil.

I maysay, in order to avoidmisapprehension, that in my case thetransmitter of the message is seldomconscious of having transmitted it,and is sometimes surprised and annoyedto find that his unconscious mind hadsent the message. As an illustrationof this I will describe one suchexperience that occurred almost at thebeginning of my experiments.
