4th SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD

The Pause Before Yes Some school children were preparing a Christmas play. One of the girls did not like the part she was given to

play. She wanted to change parts with another girl. When the teacher asked her why, she answered, "Because it is eas-ier to be an angel than to be the mother of Christ." The little girl is certainly right. To be the mother of Christ is no small matter. Yet difficult as it sounds, that is exactly what we are all called to be. We are called to bear Jesus in our body and bring him into the world.

Mary’s decision to say “yes” to God seemed ordinary to me. I have so many questions to ask Our Blessed Mother: When did you tell your parents you were pregnant? Did you tell Joseph yourself, or did the gossip mongers of Nazareth take care of that for you? Did anyone in the village believe your story? After Gabriel departed, did you doubt his visitation? Question your sanity? Fear for your life? The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Gali-lee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the House of David. The virgin's name was Mary." We know that Mary was "much perplexed" by Gabriel's words, and that she "pondered" his greeting. And we know from her last words to the angel that she agreed to God's plan. But Saint Luke, the evangelist, leaves a great detail out. This fourth Sunday of Advent, I want you to draw your attention to three pauses in the Annunciation narra-tive.

The first is the pause between the angel Gabriel's title for Mary " Hail, full of grace!" and the mission he as-signs her. Tradition tells us that Mary was probably thirteen or fourteen years old when the angel appeared to her. We know that, in first‐century Jewish culture, a girl who became pregnant out of wedlock faced grave danger. At the very least, she became an object of widespread contempt. She risked being stoned to death. To say "yes" in this case was to give herself over to scandal and rejection. It was to put everything, her reputation, her marriage, her very life, on the line. Mary's “Hail, full of grace!” status led her straight from scandal to danger to the trauma of her son's crucifixion. God's call required her to be profoundly countercultural and to trust. As the years passed, and her son's enemies mul-tiplied, Mary's "YES" demanded a degree of courage as a mother.

The second pause in the story lies between Mary's question ("How can this be?) and her consent ("Let it be with me according to your word").The danger in romanticizing Mary's consent is that it misrepresents her humanity, and keeps her story at arm's length from ours. For better or for worse, we can't relate to a person who jumps headlong into obedience. We can relate, however, to the one who struggles, to the one whose "yes" is cautious and uncertain.

The third pause ends this Sunday's Gospel reading: "Then the angel departed from her." This is the moment we all can identify with, when the prayer ends, the vision recedes, and the certainty wavers. It's the moment after the "yes," the moment when the mountaintop experience fades into memory, and life in the valley begins. How different Mary's experience might have been if the angel Gabriel had stuck around to erase her doubts and silence her critics. Gabriel did not stick around to erase her doubts when King Herod was trying to kill her son. Gabriel did not stick around to explain to Mary why her son had to die on the cross like a common criminal. But no, he departed …Then the angel departed from her, leaving the ongoing work of discernment and discipleship to Mary alone. Her "yes" did-n't signal the end of mystery. Mystery had only begun. There is a popular Christmas song addressed to Mary that asks what she knew when she consented to Gabriel's request: "Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?"

We have no way of knowing what Our Blessed Mother knew. My guess is that like us, she knew just enough to get started. The work of bearing God into the world involved constant discovery, discernment and ongoing consent, just as it does today. Mary is blessed because she made herself available to the living God, and believed that, whatever God had for her, it would be good, even though it sounded impossible. Similarly, when we make ourselves available to God today, God will bless us like He blessed Mary.

Let us pray – Father, we pray that the season of Advent has awakened in us a greater sense of your gift of presence. Help us to feel and know the gift you are in us so that we can share this life with others around us and feel the joy that is our inheritance. Amen

On behalf of Fathers John, Bill, George, Deacon Tom, and the entire Parish Staff, please accept my best wishes for a joyful, blessed Christmas 2020 and a blessed, peaceful and healthy New Year 2021. Sincerely Yours in Christ, Fr. Quilin Bouzi, omi
