Call to Discern Religious Life Ordination of Transitional Deacons - May 18, 2019

May 18, 2019, three seminarians were ordained as Transitional Deacons: (page one of this newsletter): Deacon Mark Andrew Hebert, Bishop Sheltz, Deacon Thuc Nguyen and Deacon Eduardo Ivan Rivera, CSB. The new deacons were assigned to the following parishes: • Deacon Mark: Sacred Heart Conroe • Deacon Thuc: St. Frances Cabrini • Deacon Eduardo: St. Anne’s, Houston, TX Everyone should continue to keep these young men in their prayers as they continue their discerning process. After the ordination a reception was held at the Borski Center at St. Mary’s Seminary. Everyone was receiving blessings from the new deacons and taking “selfies” with them to memorialize the blessed day!

Deacon Mark (center of photo) with his parents, Brenda and Roger Hebert, on either side of him, the rest of the people are friends and family that were present to share in Mark’s wonderful day!

Welcome New Member Rosemary Stein - St. Ignatius of Loyola

Roast and Toast of Bishop Brendan Cahill May 10, 2019

On May 10, 2019, Bishop Cahill was the honoree in the Roast and Toast which was held at The Cathedral Center. All proceeds benefited the ongoing ministry of The Emmaus Center—Counseling & Spiritual Direction in the Catholic Tradition. Bishop Cahill is always such a “good sport” as such events! When being “roasted” he laughed more than anyone at the comments being said about him. He is an excellent example of a Godly man! The Emmaus Center provides individual, marital and family counseling services from a Catholic perspective. The counseling staff are licensed professional counselors and registered interns who devote themselves to assisting those in need regardless of their religious affiliation, gender, race or age.

Mass for St. Edwards’ Graduating Seniors May 19, 2019

Several high school seniors with Father Christian Bui, Pastor, after St. Edwards’ Youth Mass. Serran, Carol Cason, asked the seniors to fill out Newman Connection cards. Newman Connection is a wonderful organization that connects Catholic events with students attending college!

Candice Tyrrell, Father Desy and Chuck Varsel.

Many Serrans gathered at the Brewster’s house to celebrate Father Desy’s 30th Anniversary. Everyone had a great time! Father Desy even brought his guitar and we had quite the sing-along— Click Here for a link to a You Tube video of the group singing “Hey Jude”.

District Governor, Candice Tyrrell, after forming a nominating committee, asked Kurt Metyko and Larry Massey to present three awards. Kurt Metyko presented Margo Geddie with the Frank J. and Kurt F. Metyko award (named after Kurt and his father). The award is presented to a Serran who has gone beyond and above working for Vocations! Larry Massey presented Bill Clary, past District Governor & Bay Area Club and Ernestina Viernes, Serra Galveston VP of Vocations, for Outstanding Achievement Awards. Congratulations for all of your hard work and commitment to the Serra Mission! We were also privileged to honor Cardinal DiNardo in celebrating his 70th birthday. Happy Birthday Cardinal DiNardo, with wishes and prayers for many many more!

Our Serrans—in the Holy Land

Right: The Brewsters with Viola and John Michael Talbot. Below: St. Peter’s Church in Jaffa, Israel

Serrans, Mary Jane and T. Wayne Brewster, attended a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and wanted to share a few special photos with you. If you have not taken a Holy Land pilgrimage yet, you need to make a plan to attend as soon as possible. There is something special about hearing the priest say “and THIS is where Jesus said …. “

Lower photo: Brewsters with Father Philip Paul Tah, after he Blessed them on their anniversary (beautiful short homily). Mary Jane sent this photo to Father Innocent, Father Innocent sent it to Father Philip’s sister (who he is best friends with), and she in turn sent it back to Father Philip. Within several hours the photo had made it from the Holy Land to Houston to Nigeria then back to the Holy Land. Father Philip asked Mary Jane, “where did my sister get this picture?” Small world!

Above photo: Brewsters standing where Jesus walked after he was arrested in Gethsamane. Right photo: The Brewsters received an anniversary Blessing from Father Sean Magaldi, their Spiritual Director on the Pilgrimage. He was ordained a priest 4 years ago, and his new assignment is the Vocation Director of the Long Island Diocese. Members of the pilgrimage surprised them with an anniversary cake.

Fellow Club of North Houston Serrans: Congratulations to our newly ordained Transitional Deacons --- Deacon Mark Andrew Hebert, Deacon Thuc Nguyen and Deacon Eduardo Ivan Rivera. As many, if not all of you know, Deacon Mark was at Christ the Good Shepherd for his pastoral year – way to go Deacon Mark!!! Many thanks to our North Houston Serrans that attended the transitional diaconate ordinations at the Co-Cathedral on May 18

th and the celebration that

followed at St. Mary’s Seminary. Our presence is just one of the very simple and significant ways that we promote vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life. Another simple way is for us to keep Deacons Mark, Thuc and Eduardo in our daily prayers as all three enter their last year of formation and discernment, and God willing ordained Priests next year!!! Also, congratulations to Father Desy Daniels on his 30

th Anniversary as a Priest. To

celebrate Mary Jane and T. Wayne Brewster opened their beautiful home for a great evening of fellowship, food, laughter and singing as Father Desy led all of us with his fabulous guitar playing and vocals. Finally, congratulations to our Board of Trustees who were installed by Cardinal DiNardo at the District 10 Serra Officer Installation Mass and Dinner at St. Mary’s Seminary on May 25th. Candice Tyrrell, Governor of District 10, and our immediate past President, did a terrific job leading and organizing this annual event. The evening was a tremendous success thanks to the many Serrans who helped Candice and to Diddy Muck with the Serra Club of Northeast Houston for lending her beautiful table clothes. My many thanks to Carol Cason and Peggy and Mike O’Neill for assisting with completion of Newman Connection Cards at the High School Senior graduation masses at St. Edwards and Christ the Good Shepherd. Newman Centers are a great way for our young adults to stay connected with their Catholic Faith as they start their college days. Luke 10:2 – The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. I look forward to hearing from you. Siempre Adelante!!! Your Brother in Christ, Ed Tyrrell
