dredging in Qatar a Job for duraCore®

Boskalis, a customer of Vosta/Combi Wear Parts, is building a private harbour in Doha.

Most often, a large dredging assign-ment and thus a high consumption of dredging teeth are linked to a big industrial investment or infrastruc-ture project. But not in this case. The toughest dredging project that Combi Wear Parts has ever been involved with is currently taking place in Qatar, where a new sea lane and a new harbour basin are being dredged to create a private harbour for the Emir of Qatar who is also constructing a palace nearby.

unique cutter head The seabed in this area consists of extremely hard rock. The conventio-nal method was to first blast the rock into smaller pieces and then start dredging. Vosta/Combi Wear Parts has developed a solution which enables dredging in this area without blasting. A special cutter head is used to cut away the rock. It

takes longer and tooth consumption is very large, but a conventional cutter head would not have been possible because it can only be used where the rock is less hard and more brittle.

increased life with duracore® Without Duracore® teeth, this project could never have been performed.

A Duracore® tooth has an inner core of hard metal that increases tooth service life by 3-7 times (depending on the dredging conditions) com-pared with a standard tooth.

Duracore® is a patented product developed by Combi Wear Parts and optimized in cooperation with Sandvik AB.

Shorr Industrial Sales Inc. has been the exclusive partner of Combi Wear Parts in the Philippines for 30 years, which makes them the longest-stan-ding partner of Combi Wear Parts. Established in 1983 by Edmundo Parrenas, the com-pany started as a small trading company selling Bofors wear parts to two mining compa-nies. Now managed by Edmundo’s son, Elmer, Shorr has expanded its operations and has a strong customer base that they take good care of.

“We make sure that we always stay one step ahead of the competition,” says Elmer Parrenas, owner and CEO of Shorr.

Initially, Shorr was a trading company selling wear parts for mining, cement, construction and mineral processing companies.

“Since our customers were outsour-cing some maintenance jobs, they decided to contact Shorr for mainte-nance of buckets for loading machi-nes. Because Shorr could do this maintenance work on-site and install Combi Wear Parts teeth systems on the buckets, we were chosen as their suppliers,” explains Elmer.

To develop the business further, Shorr required assistance in deter-mining specifications needed to pro-duce high-quality buckets. Combi Wear Parts provided the support that Shorr needed to properly carry out the changes in their company set-up and respond to the market’s need for long-lasting wear parts. This development has meant that Shorr can today offer the following products and services; dump truck bed customization, welding assess-ment and training, welding of general structures, maintenance of

digger and loader buckets, mainte-nance and repairs of crusher equipment during maintenance shutdowns, welding products, steel, buckets, feeders and screeners for crusher plants.

strongmanShorr now manufactures buckets and the ProClaws tooth system from Combi Wear Parts. The finished product is then branded as Strong-man Wear Bodies.

From having just two customers in the 1980s, Shorr now has over 30 clients in the mining, cement and processing industries. Their clients include Philex Mining Corporation, a top gold and copper producer in the Philippines, and Carmen Copper Corporation and Galeo Equipment and Mining Company, both based in Cebu.

Shorr has been working with Galeo Equipment Mining Company since 2010 when Shorr won the bidding to be the contractor for mining of Carmen Copper Corporation. Galeo has since contracted Shorr to repair

their existing buckets and has also purchased brand new Strongman buckets with the Proclaws systems for their Komatsu PC-1250 and PC-2000 excavators.

Through the combined expertise of Shorr and Combi Wear Parts, clients who use Strongman are assured of lower maintenance costs and fewer operational disruptions, which means better overall eco-nomy. Proclaws W30 and W40 have a much longer life than competing systems. Efficiency is also increased, as Philex Mining experienced when they began using the Combi Wear Parts tooth system on their loader buckets that were previously equipped with LHD cutter protec-tors. Together, Shorr and Combi Wear Parts have succeeded in creating a product that has the longest life-length on the market.

ProfessionalismToday, Shorr has a total of five branches located in different parts of the Philippines and manpower of about 100. Locations include their main office in Manila, a warehouse facility in Silang, Cavite and a branch in Cebu, which is their largest provincial operation. “We prefer to work with Combi Wear Parts because of their profes-sionalism and loyalty, attributes that we have also adapted in our company,” says Elmer. “Beyond product quality, they also provide us with outstanding technical support and have fostered a strong relation-

ship with us through the years,” he continues.

Elmer believes that the success of their business not only lies in the integrity of the product but also with the integrity of the people he works with.

“A partnership will not last for as long as three decades without trust and the common relentless pursuit for excellence,” concludes Elmer Parrenas.

our new finanCe assistantCombi wear Parts Presents

Anna Lilleng, 29, recently started work as a finance assistant at the Combi Wear Parts head office in Kristine-hamn. After studying econo-mics at college in London, Anna gained experience wor-king in the finance department at Google in Ireland, as well as working for other companies.

Asked what she brings to Combi Wear Parts she replies that she is determined, enthusiastic, gets things done but above all she is passionate about finance. Another strength is that she is a fluent English speaker after spending so many years traveling abroad.

We asked her about her travels. Anna started living overseas ten years ago when she spent four years living in Ireland. Then she moved on to Australia, where she met her English

partner. They spent two years traveling around the coast of Australia. During this period she worked in finance, fruit picking, sales and other part-time jobs. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world and the only one of the top six completely surrounded by water. It’s no wonder then that traveling all around the coast takes two years, it’s a distance of 35,000 km. Three months before her Australian trip and three months after, Anna toured around Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and other countries in south east Asia. Then it was time to come back to London to go to college.

Anna and her partner now live in Karlstad. When she’s not at work, Anna likes to keep busy. She has taken a painting course and likes to paint in oil. She enjoys discovering old pieces of furniture in antique shops and then refurbishing them in her own unique style. To stay fit she runs and cycles and also enjoys

playing squash. She says that she finds yoga to be a great way of winding down.

As you can understand, Anna loves traveling. As well as weekend trips to European destinations she enjoys traveling around Sweden now that she is back in her home country. Her family has Norwegian connec-tions too, so she visits Oslo every now and then.

The energy and charisma that Anna brings to her work means that Combi Wear Parts has already become a happier and more energetic workplace.

Did you know that the head office of Combi Wear Parts lies next to the largest lake in the EU? Lake Vänern, which is continental Europe’s third largest lake, is also home to Europe’s largest freshwater archipe-lago with over 22,000 islands. The

entire population of the earth could step into lake Vänern without treading on each other’s toes. Vänern covers 5,650 km2 and has a volume of 153 km3.

Lake Vänern is so large that it is affected by the earth’s rotation, leading to anti-clockwise currents.

lake vänern a huge inland sea

Finally, it’s worth noting that in addition to having Europe’s third largest lake, Sweden is also Europe’s third largest country in terms of land surface. Furthermore, the heraldic national symbol of Sweden is three crowns, but that is a diffe-rent matter entirely.

a riddleImagine that a huge number of diggers equipped with extra durable teeth spend innumerable hours flattening the globe so that it becomes perfectly round, like a billiard ball, and the same size as it is now. Somebody then manages to fasten a band of steel all the way round the equator. This steel band is then extended by one (1) metre so that the band rises an equal amount around the earth. Now, this space between the earth’s surface and the band of steel, is it large enough for:

1. a human hair to fit under?2. a human finger to fit under?3. an orange to roll under?

Look for the answer elsewhere in this magazine.

The Sami live in Sweden, Russia, Norway and Finland. They occupy a very large area that stretches from the county of Dalarna in central Sweden to the Arctic ocean in northern Norway and the Kola Penin-sula in Russia. This area is called Sápmi in the Sami language and it is home to around 90,000 Sami people.

lived here for a long timeThe Sami have lived in the same place for a long time. About 2,000 years ago the Roman historian, Tacitus, mentioned a people in the north whom he called the Fenni. “They eat herbs,” wrote Tacitus, “dress in animal skins and sleep on the ground. They put their trust in arrows made of sharp bone. Men and women follow each other and live off the same hunt.”

swedish sami In Sweden there are about 25,000 Sami earning a living from hunting, fishing, traditional Sami handicrafts and arts and crafts. Nowadays, Sami also gain their income from various industries in rural areas such as farming and they are represented in most professions, particularly in Sami tourism. About 10% work with reindeer.

reindeer in sweden Today, reindeer husbandry takes place on about half of Sweden’s land

surface. There are over 4,500 reindeer owners and about 250,000 reindeer in winter flocks in Sweden. Reindeer herding is unique in several areas. The Sami recognize eight seasons that govern the reindeer’s life: Early spring (March - April), spring (April-May), early summer (June), summer (June - July), early autumn (August), autumn (September-October), early winter (November-December) and winter (December-March).

Clothing The costume traditionally worn by the Sami on ceremonial occasions is called ‘kolt’. Kolt looks different depending on where it comes from, but common colours are yellow,

green, red and blue. Accessories include jewellery, belt, special shoes and shoelaces and a shawl. Depen-ding on the weather, special gloves, trousers and hats are worn.

one of the indigenous peoples The Sami are an indigenous people of the world, which means that they have lived in the same place all the time, even before the formation of nation states. Indigenous peoples have their own culture and language that is different from the rest of the country. This also applies to the Sami, who have their own national anthem and flag. The Swedish Sami are classified as a national minority and thus have special rules when it comes to language and culture. Since 2011, the Sami are recognized as a people in the Swedish constitu-tion. Being an indigenous people gives them protection under inter-national law.

dalhalla, nature’s amphitheatre 360 million years ago a meteor fell over the Swedish province of Dalarna. The bedrock was transformed by the huge blast and vertical strips of various minerals and soils were for-med, some of which contained lime. Many millions of years later humans started mining limestone in the area. In Dalhalla, limestone was quarried as recently as 1990.

Digging, blasting and quarrying for over fifty years produced an almost perfect acoustic arena that stands comparison with the ancient amphitheatres in Greece. It’s as if a giant hand scooped a perfect bowl in the earth measuring 400 metres long, 175 metres wide and 55 metres deep.

a world-class music venue Dalhalla is one of the world’s most powerful and most beautiful concert venues. From June to early Septem-ber around thirty events are arrang-ed. Dalhalla offers a wide repertoire consisting of choral arrangements, jazz concerts, shows, and perhaps above all, wonderful opera perfor-mances. The acoustics are so good that most of the performances can be given without any reinforcement by microphones and speakers,

which is fairly unusual in an out-door arena. The limestone walls around Dalhalla are rough, which makes the sound softer and pre-vents it from bouncing round and forming echoes. The result is that you hear equally well wherever you sit.

We guarantee that a visit to Valhalla will be an experience of a lifetime. Visit www.dalhalla.se and read more about all the events.

The right of public access in Sweden is unlike that of any other country. It provides a unique opportunity for everyone, not just Swedes, to move freely throughout the countryside. For example, in the countryside you may cross private land, stay on it temporarily and pick mushrooms and berries. You may also moor your boat for a night where you want.

right of PubliC aCCess not just about rights The law also sets demands in terms of respect and care for the land-scape, animal life, landowners and other people. The right of public access is enshrined in one of Sweden’s four constitutions and can be traced very far back in time. Many people, especially tourists, think it’s fantastic that Sweden offers this opportunity. So why not come to Sweden next summer, maybe rent a canoe and experience the wonderful scenery and the light summer nights.

full sPeed ahead at lJungbYKeYCast’s new foundrY in lJungbY

Production at Keycast’s new foundry in Ljungby is now up to full speed. The first products were completed in January and the foundry is now opera-ting three shifts, 24 hours a day. The old foundry in central Ljungby, which was in opera-tion for a hundred years, has now stopped and all produc-tion has been moved to the new plant.

modern technology means increased exportsKeycast Foundry Group’s new production line will supply cast parts primarily to Keycast’s proces-sing plant in Halmstad but also to Combi Wear Parts. Keycast’s products are mainly intended for the Swedish market, while 90% of Combi Wear Parts’ products are exported across nearly every continent. The focus in future for new production will be on exporting complex cast products into Europe where Keycast’s modern technology and optimized processes mean clear competitive advantages.

location means synergiesThe new production line is right

next to the Combi Wear Parts site, which provides clear synergies. The manage-ment team, including operations manager

Torvald Strand, has responsibility for both foundries. In addition the melting ovens in the Combi Wear Parts foundry will also melt steel for the new production line. Both foundries will produce around 12,000 tonnes of cast products per

year. Along with the foundry in Kolsva, the Keycast Group will thus produce a total of 18,000 tonnes of cast products a year.

state-of-the-art and eco-friendly The new plant is very compact with modern casting technology and a line where the molds run forward like they do on an assembly line. The sand for the molds is chemically bound to give a better finish and higher dimensional accuracy. The flow is like a winding snake through the foundry, which means no extra handling is required. The hard work

of lifting tools and goods has been almost completely eliminated, which of course is positive for the staff. A great deal of thought has been put into the internal and external environment. A good working environment and good profitability are key to a healthy and competitive foundry, says opera-tions manager Torvald Strand. He looks with great confidence to the future and many new and exciting opportunities and products.

The city of Kiruna in northern Sweden must be relocated. The entire city has to move a few miles to the east. Many houses will be demolished, but a number of buildings such as the church, will be taken to the new location.

A brand new city centre must be built that will contain everything that is needed in the form of streets, squares, parks, shops, municipal buildings, homes, schools, police stations and much more.

iron deposit in Kiruna So why must a whole city be moved? Well, there’s a huge iron ore deposit under the current city. The ore is worth billions of Swedish krona. It lies like a giant disc diagonally down through the bedrock and leaning toward the current city of Kiruna. The only way to mine it is by

moving a whole city the world’s largest removal

moving the city to a new, safer place.

a long projectThis kind of gigantic relocation has not been performed before any-where in the world, and the interna-tional interest is very large. Ob-viously, it’s not something that can be done quickly. The removal will take place for many years to come. Residents of Kiruna will not need to

pay for this relocation. The mining company, LKAB, the Swedish state and the local municipality will foot the bill. The agreement between the state-owned mining company, LKAB, and Kiruna municipality has been settled. It was passed in Kiruna city council in early June. The terms of the contract can be applied imme-diately, even if an appeal is made.

If you have a desire to sit outside and read a newspaper in the middle of the night, you can do so if, for example, you travel as far north as you can during the summer. North of the Arctic Circle at about 66.5° north the sun shines around the clock. In Kiruna in northern Sweden, for example, the sun shines all the time from late May to mid-July, nearly 50 days at a stretch. On the other hand, the sun never comes up in the winter but that is another, and clearly much darker story.

mörrumsån river – toP international Class fishing

If you are the least bit inte-rested in salmon and sea trout fishing, you should think about visiting Mörrumsån river in southern Sweden. People have been fishing here since 1231, so we can safely talk about fishing traditions. Tens of thousands of anglers from around the world come here every year to catch salmon and sea trout.

world record, maybe? If you fancy trying to land a record catch this is the place to be. The world’s largest sea trout was caught here in 1993. It weighed 18.36 kg. A number of salmon that weighed more than 25 kg have been caught. So basically every cast of the rod has a potential world record hanging on it.

the deepest hole A group of Russian scientists have drilled an extremely deep hole called the SG-3 on the Kola Penin-sula, near the Norwegian border. The digging ended, or was put on hold due to lack of funds, in the late 1980s when they had come down to the impressive depth of 12,262 metres. They still fetch scientific data from the 25 cm wide hole. For example, the temperature at the deepest point is 200 degrees, much hotter than had been thought.

more than just fishing Even if you are not interested in fishing, you can do like hundreds of thousands of other people do, and just enjoy the incredible scenery along the valley, and maybe even see the salmon jump. Or why not visit a nature reserve or hike along a trail? A popular 30 km hiking trail called “Laxaleden” follows the Mörrumsån river. Beside the trail there are signs telling you about the local history and culture. Find out more about this amazing place at www.sveaskog.se/mor-rum/.

the answer to the riddle The Earth’s new, longer circum-ference = 2 x π x r + 1 or expres-sed differently = 2 x π x (r + y), where y is the radius extension. The equation becomes 2 x π x r + 1 = 2 x π x (r + y), which gives y = 15.9 cm (approximately).

Answer: you should be able to roll an orange under the steel strip. Or an apple, if you happen to be allergic to oranges.

Pit & Quarry Supplies Inc, our distributor in Minnesota, USA, began operations in 1992 with a focus on spare parts and process equipment for crushing plants and wear parts for the construction and mining industries. The company has gradually diversified its product range and expanded its presence in the market so that it can now meet requirements in the construction, mining, agricultural and urban construction sectors.

The product range consists of crusher replacement parts, pumps, abrasive resistant wear products, ground engaging tools, earthmoving equipment replacement parts, off highway produc-tion truck ride struts, shovel compo-nents, hydraulic tools. They also perform repairs of equipment in these areas.

Quality and service ensures success Pit & Quarry’s motto is to always offer quality services, and to create added value for its customers. They strive to deliver quality products and equipment at competitive prices, resulting in lower maintenance costs for customers.

“It’s one of the main reasons why Pit & Quarry became interested in Combi Wear Parts products, which we have been successfully marketing since 2008,” explains Brian Vito, CEO.

“The products from Combi Wear Parts meet the high standards of quality and service that we seek. Performance in the field and the feedback we get from customers provide the proof we need.

one of many satisfied usersMartin Marietta, Waite Park, MN, is one of the satisfied users of ProClaws tooth system from Combi Wear Parts. Martin Marietta is the second largest producer in the United States of crushed stone, gravel and sand for roads and buildings. The company operates 300 quarries in 27 states in the US, Canada, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. In 2012 the company had around 5,000 employees and sold 128 million tons of stone, gravel and sand.

Since 2011 they have been using ProClaws size W30 on a Hitachi EX1200 face shovel. The machine has averaged 2,700 productive hours per year, with the bucket holding 6.7 m3 when loading blasting rock of granite. On average, they have got 170 hours of usage from the teeth (730110) which is

14% more than they got with the previous system. The life length of the mechanical lip shruods is 1,200 hours and they are very pleased with how well they work and protect the blade.

“Most outstanding are the adepters that have reached a lifespan of 7,500 hours or 31 rounds of teeth per adepter,” says Steve Harms, Regional Manager at Pit & Quarry. “These results are exceptionally good. They are mainly because they have chosen to use the wear cap adepters with wear caps that protect the adepters so well, but also because of the well-designed and customised interfaces between tooth and adapter,” says Oskar Berg, CEO of Combi Wear Parts Inc. At Combi Wear Parts we are very proud of these top results, and we look forward to many more successful years together in the United States.
